Demystifying the CIHR Guidelines for Health Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples

Workshop

• WORKSHOP SUMMARY: The workshop will focus on the CIHR Guidelines for Health Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples. These Guidelines have been prepared to assist researchers and institutions in carrying out ethical and culturally competent research involving Aboriginal people. The intent is to promote health through research that is in keeping with Aboriginal values and traditions. The Guidelines will assist in developing research partnerships that will facilitate and encourage mutually beneficial and culturally competent research. The Guidelines will also promote ethics review that enables and facilitates rather than suppresses or obstructs research.

• Dr. Sarah de Leeuw is an Associate professor for the Northern Medical Program at UNBC. Dr de Leeuw’s research is situated, broadly, at the intersection of cultural and historical geography. It draws heavily from ongoing discussions in (post)colonial theory and writings by Indigenous theorists, artists, and writers. Her research with the Northern Medical Program and the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health aims to expand understandings about colonialism (past and present), particularly as it was undertaken geographically, as a social determinant of Aboriginal peoples’ health.

Travis Holyk

• TRAVIS HOLYK is the Director of Research and Policy Development for Carrier Sekani Family Services, an organization responsible for health, social and legal services for First Nations people of the Carrier and Sekani territory. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia, the institution where he completed his MA in First Nations Studies. Travis is currently completing his Doctorate in Education at Simon Fraser University and has conducted a considerable amount of research into social issues including health, justice and social research for the Carrier and Northern Secwepemc nations.
