I Lyndhurst Overcom es East Paterson, 7-0

New York Unrrersity and Fordham, tw o school* which one* sponsored football team s that attracted crow ds of 7 M M to Yankee Stadium when ever they m et, had a melancholy reunion the other Saturday. Team s fielded by the tw o colle(es play ad at Rose Hill o f Fordham and the Ford- hamites came through w ith a one-touchdown victory.

Thoea who saw the ram * assure us it w as one of the boat played they have have seen. The teams w ere fully uniformed and well coached.

There w ere about 13,00 present fo r the gam e— of the days when Yankee Stadium hardly w as big

<(h to contain the crow ds which wanted to see the tw o teams.

It w as a great series.Fort&am was tough. N Y U w as tough. Both had All-

Am erican players. But the zip went out o f football spirit when it wax

•« co ve re d that in spite o f the crowds the profits did not Adtl up.

. Now there is a feeling the colleges m ay once again resum e bi^thne football.

W e think they*re crasy if they do. B ig League football costs big money. Down at Rugtera and L a fay ette th ey ’re b r in g in g in scholarship p layers by the ton. You can ’t compete in the big leagues today without a scholarship roll that bankrupts any save the colleges which can draw big crowds—and which have their own stadiums.

N Y U and Fordham only made the ow ner o f the Yankee Stadium and Polo Grounds rich. The colleger, never got a nickel.

M O N T C LA IR AND W A G N ERT w o of the best team s in the vicinity are W agner

and M ontclair State. Both rank with small colleges.Yet both colleges pass out scholarships to students

who have brawn enough to don the football suits. It is paying off this year for W agner. The Grvm er

Hill gang went through the season undefeated, registering fo r Coach Jim Hicks a perfect season.

One of the finest of the W agnerites w as Chuck De- Staulo of Lyndhurst. H e'll be back next year and he is counted upon to carry the load fo r the Staten Island dub

New Jerse y puts quite a few players into W agner uniforms. Sen io r» this y ear include Lee A canfrio o f R u th erford, and end, Dick Spirito of Woo<KRidge, a halfback, Dan Coughlin of Cresskill, a quarterback, Jim Drum goole of Fo rt Lee, a halfback and H arry Abraham sen of Closter, a fullback.

Spirito 's great little W ood-Ridge team mate, R oger K alin ger, one of the sm allest back in the country, did a m arvelous job fo r R u tgers this year. H e completed 75 passes tfcis year and posted over 800 yards in gains.

Tw o other New Je rse y boys—both from R iver Edge— w ere Rutgers stars. T hey w ere Bob Brendel, the big fu llback, and Rsdph Stegm ann. Betw een them they ran over MO yards fo r Rutgers.

I t ’s a story we all k n o w and love—the first Pilgrim Thanksgiving. The excite

ment in their little homes must have been pretty much as it is today—the tantalizing smells of roast turkey and pumpkin pie— the bustle and rush of eager children—it must have been a wonderful day I

But before the Pilgrims sat down to their feast they observed the true meaning of Thanksgiving. They all gathered together in iheir meetinghouse to give thanks for the good they had received, lor survival through a long year of hardship, and to

pray for the strength and courage to keep their faith in this strange, new land.

This Thanksgiving, why not take your family to your house of worship. A quiet hour of prayer and thanks will make your holiday so much more meaningful.

Wherever you are . . . whatever your beliefs may be . . . take time to offer your words of thanks . . . just as the Pilgrims did more than 300 years ago.
