"Good Enough for Government Work"
By Karen Elkins for The POSTDOCket For most of myyears as a researchscientist in variousU.S. governmentpositions, I've heardthe phrase "goodenough forgovernment work"used derisively todescribe the supposedly half-baked efforts of governmentemployees. Only recently did I learn that the expressionoriginated during World War II to boast about work that wasof the highest quality, and thus "good enough" to beaccepted by Uncle Sam. Needless to say, I like theoriginal concept a whole lot better, in part because ittracks with my experience.
I can say without hesitation that the vast majority of mycolleagues have been exceptionally smart and creativeand have ridiculously high standards. If that sounds likeyou, there are plenty of opportunities for both postdoctoral

Lessons From Year 1 on the Faculty
By Mark Tonelli for Chronicle Vitae
Well here it is already- the end of my firstyear of full-timeteaching. With 25years of experience inthe music industry, and 20 of those yearsteaching music as an adjunct, I'd felt well-prepared foracademia. In fact, I was raring to go.
Last fall, as I walked across campus during the first weekof classes, I felt the excitement of being part of the wholeenterprise. I traveled the hallowed halls, bustling with thecommotion of students. I sat in faculty meetings andglanced around at my new colleagues, the collectivebraintrust charged with developing, monitoring, scrutinizing, and ultimately teaching the curriculum. I metwith my classes for the first time, and in between, retired tothe solitude of my very first faculty office. It felt exhilarating. It was what I'd been preparing for all those years in gradschool.
As you can probably guess, the honeymoon period sooncame to a close, as it does with any job. What remainedwas the business of getting down to work - teaching.
