Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

This week we say Haere Ra to Trina Bennett, TeamLeader of Te Pouahi and Director of Teaching andLearning. Trina leaves to take up a bi-lingual TeamLeader position at Finlayson Park School in Auckland. Wethank Trina for the contribution she has made to our schooland especially the contribution she has made to Te Pouahiand wish her all the best for the next step in her career.

Chanel Ngaruhe will join our staff as the new team leaderfor Te Pouahi. Chanel is currently teaching at TeKurakaupapa o Manawatu in Palmerston North. Prior tothat she was Head of Department for Maori Studies at

Queen Elizabeth College, also in Palmerston North. Weare looking forward to working with her and to thestrengths, skills and interests Chanel will undoubtedlybring to our school.

With the appointment of a new team leader for TotaraSyndicate we also say goodbye to Sue Ford at the end ofthis term. Sue has been a long term relief teacher in ourschool for 3 years and has shown great loyalty to theschool and to the students in her class. We will continue tosee Sue around the school since she is keen to continuerelief teacher work in the district. Sue will lead the parentinterviews for Room 8 students during week two nextterm. Thank you Sue for all that you have done for ourschool and for the students in your care.

The new team leader for Totara will be Fiona McDonald.Fiona is currently teaching at Hanmer Springs School andprior to that led a Year 5/6 team at Sumner School inChristchurch. Fiona brings strengths in teaching andlearning and has a wide range of e-learning skills.

National StandardsIn this edition we have presented the second of two parts tothe mathematics National Standards for your interest. Staffare grappling with the contradictions and other difficulties

so please bear in mind that what we present to you in Julyis our best effort for now!

Parent-Teacher InterviewsThe site is open for bookings now and will close on 21July. Go to: www.schoolinterviews.co.nz to make yourbooking. The code for you to access the website isYAFRN. Interviews have been scheduled for 13 minuteseach. If you have trouble accessing or using the websiteplease contact our helpful staff at the front office.

During interviews teachers will discuss the first of twowritten reports on your child in relation to the National

Standards. We believe it is important that these bedelivered face-to-face to ensure you have a chance to askquestions and to ensure there are no misunderstandingsabout what is being reported. We also want to ensure we

have your feedback so we can improve the way we report toyou.

Before School SupervisionJody Neilson operates our before school supervisionprogramme 7:30 8:30 am in the school library. The cost is$1 per day and while it is nice to have some notice that yourchild will be attending we appreciate that homecircumstances can change quickly. If that happens you aremost welcome to place your child in the programme at anytime. With winter being such a cold time your child will atleast be in a warm place and under supervision.

Enrolment Scheme (reprinted from last week)There is a lot of work to do yet but it is important thatschool families know of the proposed change to schoolenrolment procedures. The board of trustees has beenrequired by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to start the

process of putting in place an enrolment scheme. Thepurpose of the scheme is to ensure that overcrowding inthe school does not occur. Based on data trendsavailable to ourselves and the MOE we could reach aproposed maximum roll of 461 by about July 2011.

We have yet to agree on a home zone but thefollowing is proposed: an area with its boundaries beingRichmond Avenue extension, Brougham Street toTrafalgar Street South, Trafalgar Street South, Nile

Street East of the Cathedral to Collingwood Street,Collingwood Street to Halifax Street, to Trafalgar Streetto the intersection of Queen Elizabeth II and Atawhai,Drive and then to the hills. Areas bounded by this lineand including the Maitai and Brook Valleys will beconsidered the home-zone for the purpose of thisenrolment scheme.

We would like to receive comments from you on theproposed home zone..

For students currently enrolled in the school but wholive outside any agreed home zone there will be nochange. Also, future siblings of currently enrolled

students will be entitled to enrol in the school even ifthey live outside the home zone.One major change will be that children who do not livewithin the home zone will not be able to enrol in theschool unless they enrol in a special programme run bythe school or if there is, from time to time, vacancies forout of zone students. In our case, the special programmeis our bilingual (Maori) unit, Te Pouahi. However, weare likely to limit numbers in that unit to around 69.

An operative date could be as early as 1 September more on that later.

BOT NewsletterAs part of this copy of the board of trustees newsletteryou will receive a copy of the school strategic plan. Theboard and principal are currently working on the actionsthat will be taken in order to meet the strategicobjectives that have been set.

Early in term 3 the board of trustees will again beseeking your views on some aspects of governance andmanagement of the school. A questionnaire will gohome with the first newsletter of the term and we wouldlike it returned when you come along to parent-teacherinterviews the following week.

year. Meet at the Hackett Picnic Area, at the endof Aniseed Valley Road (left off the main road atHope) at 11am. The walk is 1 hours each waywith a stop at the waterfalls picnic area for lunch.Its a well graded walk with a few bridges & a longswing bridge, which the kids find quite cool. Bring

Nelson Primary Schools Cross CountryChampionships

A team of 19 selected runners recently competed in theannual Nelson Primary Schools Cross CountryChampionships at Saxton Field. There were over 385children competing from throughout the Nelson District.

All were top runners from every school represented atthe event.

They competed over a 2 km course which proved

challenging. The wet weather prior to the event hadprovided very muddy conditions with a large amount ofwater ly ing on the course. This combined with the windchill factor made going difficult. All gave their best andshowed great sportsmanship. Congratulations team, welldone.

Special mention must go to Joey V who was placed 7th inthe year 6 girls race and Thomas Z placed 8th in the year5 boys race. Both have been selected to representTasman in the Inter-Regional Cross CountryChampionships to be held in Hamner in September.

Congratulations also to Sam M who finished 15th in theyear 5 boys race and to the year 5 boys team whofinished 4th in their section (Thomas Z, Sam M, David Z,

Albie M, Kahu R, Luke M, Dylan R, Callum M, Logan).
