The qualifications aim to enable pupils to:

These qualifications are ideal for any candidates wishing to develop their understanding and practical
skills in music technology. The flexible qualifications and unit combinations allow pupils to develop
their skills and knowledge in areas that will benefit them most, including recording techniques and
equipment, dance music production, live performance technology, producing a podcast and exploring
job opportunities.
Entrance Guidance
There aren’t any specific recommended prior learning requirements for these qualifications.
These qualifications are suitable for pupils aged pre-16 and above.

NCFE Level 2 Music Technology Courses - 6 Assessment and Moderation
The NCFE Level 2 Music Technology qualifications are internally assessed. Candidates must
produce a portfolio of work that covers all learning outcomes for each of the chosen units.
Internal Assessment
Assessors at PerformaTech will assess each candidate’s portfolio. A PerformaTech Associate, from
an external education body, will then verify a reasonable sample of portfolios to ensure the
consistency with national standards. Another reasonable sample of portfolios will be requested by,
and then assessed by an External Moderator.
Each candidate must create a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates achievement of all learning
outcomes associated with each unit.
The main pieces of evidence for the portfolio could include:

To achieve the NCFE Level 2 Music Technology qualifications pupils must successfully demonstrate

This unit introduces candidates to music sequencing and the operation of sequencing-based
software. The learner will gain an understanding of the differences between sequencing using audio
samples and MIDI (or virtual instrument), and how the two can be combined to create music.

This unit introduces candidate to music sequencing and the operation of sequencing-based software.
The learner will focus on the creative and effective (ie musically agreeable) exploitation of the
software to create music.

This unit introduces candidates to multi-track recordings using microphones, mixing equipment and
recording devices or software. It covers setting up the equipment required for a recording session,
and effectively recording multiple audio sources.

This unit introduces candidates to editing mono and/or stereo audio files using software. Candidates
will carry out a range of editing operations to create a range of useful audio files, including loops.
Candidates will be expected to distinguish between different audio formats, show some
understanding of audio waveform displays and know the key editing functions of the software they
are using.
The software used to conduct edits must allow a wide range of editing functions, and have sufficient
multi-track capability to allow candidates to carry out the straightforward mixing and/or blending of
multiple files.

This unit introduces candidates to the production of sound effects for use in music or sound
production activity. Candidates will explore sound effect production techniques and then apply that

This unit aims to provide candidates with the basic introduction to location recording. This includes
how to plan and evaluate a recording whilst ensuring the appropriate Health and Safety procedures
are met.
