Remembering Pearl Harbor on that

Day of Infamy The surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor,

Hawaii, by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 -- described by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "a date that will live in infamy" -- officially put the United States in to a war that was already raging in Europe.

Japanese fighters and torpedo bombers from six carriers more than400miles away in the Pacific hit the island of Oahu at around 8 o'clock on a sleepy Sunday morning in a devasting two-hour assault that killed 2,400 men and wounded nearly half as many more.

In the wake of the attack, six of the eight U .S. battleships were sunk or badly damaged, and a like number of destroyers and cruisers were also torn by bombs. Half the island's aircraft were wrecked

Despite the chaos that day, a spirited defense was mounted, and some Americans were able to cripple, if not stop, a few of the enemy. Among the valiant was Navy Messman First Class Doris "Dorie" Miller aboard the USS Arizona, the first ship on Battleship Row. Alongside in flames was the USS Tennessee, and the USS West Virginia behind it.

Through the billowing smoke, Miller saw his skipper fall after strafing fighters raked the deck. Rushing to his aid on the bridge, Miller managed to drag the officer down the ladder to safety and then returned to man the machine gun until he was forced

to leave the sinking ship. The act eventually earned him the Navy Crpss. In 1943, Miller was officially listed as missing in action.

The USS Arizona was never raised from Pearl Harbor and a permanent memorial was built over the site of its resting place.

A memorial service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor will beheld at Fort Ord's Post Chapel Center, at 9:55 a.m, on Friday, Dec. 6. For more information concerning this service call 242-3831.

Several television programs are being aired that recount this event. These programs are listed on page 2

Monterey Federal closes its doors The Monterey Federal Credit Union's

Board of Directors has decided to

relinquish its space in Herrmann Hall

beginning Friday, Dec. 20.

Accocding

to the credit

union, the

decision to

relinquish the

space was

due to several

factors, ~ including : a

marked decrease in

.......... transaction

volumes at the NPS office; the Navy

Federal CU office in Herrmann Hall has expanded into a full-service, cash operation

and now fills this need for Navy personnel; with either frequent or infrequent use, the

NPS office serves fewer than 4 percent of the Credit Union's total membership; and

MFCU feels that pricing of non-proprietary A TM transactions should be evenly applied

to all members.

Other Monterey Federal Credit Union offices are located at 2600 Garden Road,

Monterey, 161 Fountain Avenue, Pacific Grove and at the Presidio of Monterey.

For more information concerning MFCU call (408) 647-1000 .

Museum receives donation from radar lab e A 1950's shipboard air and surface

search radar is the latest acquisition for the NPS museum. Paul Buczynski

(far left) and technician's EW2 Ted Shuey and EW3 Mark Robinson

delivered the radar set to the museum recently.

The radar set, serial number 109 in the AN/SPS-6C line, was installed in

Spanagel Hall shortly after construction on the building was

completed in 1954. The unit became operational in January 1955. The

radar, Ross Seely, radar lab manager, says, "may very well be the only one

to live on as a show-and-tell item with its records, technical manuals and

history still intact."
