    Feminization o men what? Men are supposed to be themacho and strong ones in our society because they havetestosterone, right? Well, in many cases this is still true;

    however, just look around you. Do your own experiment withyour male loved ones, check them out! Ten also take note o the

    males you seen in everyday lie at grocery stores, gas stations, eventhe gym! I think you will discover a commonality especiallyin males over 40 years old. What you will find is larger abdo-mens (central obesity) and increased male breast tissue (does thissound amiliar to you women who may be reading this?). Couldit be similar to what happens to a woman going through meno-pause at in all the wrong places (difficulty losing weight andstubborn abdominal at)? Te answer is yes! But why? Men arenot supposed to have estrogen, right? It will make them weakand more emotional, just to name a ew. While that might notbe so bad, a ew women may be thinking, the reality is that highamounts o estrogen in men is just as bad as it is or women. Tereneeds to be balance. Excess estrogen is problematic.

    Estrogen dominance is thought to be responsible or age relatedweight gain, metabolic disorders and a variety o chronic healthconditions in both men and women. It is unortunate becausebalance is just not the case in todays world, especially when itcomes to diet and the oodswe all consume, not to mention ourchemical laden society.

    So, what is the Standard American Diet (SAD) you ask? Itis how a majority o the US population eats. Te SAD diet is adiet high in the ollowing: unhealthy animal, saturated and

    hydrogenated ats, and high in processed oods, salt and s(especially in junk ood, ast oods). Not to mention low in ficomplex carbohydrates and plant-based oods. Tere is also ao nutrients, related to how oods are processed and cookewell as all the additives, toxins, preservatives and hormones

    plague our oods.Our American diet has drastically changed in the past sev

    decades. It was noted to be the cause o at least two-thirddeaths in the 1998 Surgeon General Report by Dr. C. EvKoop. Additionally, our diet is primarily one o the biggestactors to account or the nations leading causes o death: hdisease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and intestinal disorders. Tturn points to obesity, something not just specific to menthe country in general. New research rom the Journal o Amcan Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine (June 2revealed that 75 percent o men and 67 percent o womenoverweight or obese compared rom 20 years ago when it63 percent o men and 55 percent o women. Hmmm, it m

    just be because people overeat and dont exercise, right? WObviously, quantity o ood and inactivity is certainly part oproblem. We all are aware o what makes us gain weightwhat you may not know is that we are all being exposed to lamounts o estrogenic compounds every day, and this wrhavoc with our hormonal balance.

    soybean, canola, corn, and peanut oil (promote estrogen). Addi-tionally, synthetic orms o estrogen or xenoestrogens are oundin the air, cleaning products, flame retardants, dioxins, PCBs,plastic chemicals (such as bisphenol A or BPA in plastic silver-ware, ood storage containers, water bottles, etc.) lotions, sham-poos and water, and PVC pipes. Tere are also parabens, whichare the synthetic chemicals used as preservatives in personal careproducts like shampoos, deodorants, sunscreens, cosmetics andalso in oods like mayonnaise, mustard, salad dressings and candy.

    Parabens can lead to diminished muscle mass, extra at storageand increase in male breast tissue. oxins all the cides pesti-cides, herbicides, insecticides are all xenoestrogens. Xenoes-trogens or synthetic orms o estrogen are said to mimic estrogen.Modern processing techniques o oods are a big culprit or this.Processed oods contain dyes, preservatives, flavorings and otheradditives. Tere are over 3,000 different chemicals added to oodin the US every year and noneare required to be reported to theFDA or USDA. When the estrogen content within our bodiesis excessive, it leads to estrogen sensitive tissues, which in turncauses larger adipose or at cells in the body. Te excess estrogenprovides a never ending cycle o at production and promotes atstorage an ongoing cycle.

    Tereore, this certainly can be contributing to the eminizationo men but even more alarming is that it even decreases a manstestosterone levels! It is estimated that about 4 to 5 million Ameri-can men suffer rom low testosterone, but only 5 percent are beingtreated. Some signs your man may have low testosterone include:excess body at, low libido, gynecomastia (excess breast tissue),lack o motivation, depression, low sel esteem , irritability, mood-iness, memory loss, loss or morning erections, erectile dysunc-tion, atigue, decreased energy/muscle mass, testicle shrinkageand low sperm count.

    What can be done about this? First, be aware and get inormed.Ten talk to the men in your lie, and let them know the threat

    to their health, which will only continue to spiral out o controli action is not taken. Help arm them with the right knowledge:eating a healthy organic, chemical ree diet, proper balancing ohormones, essential nutrients rom oods and high quality supple-ments, which can be preventative. Without intervention, our men(and society) are destined or metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabe-tes, high blood pressure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke andcancers. According to the CDC (2013) the top two leading causeso death in men is heart disease and cancer.

    because I just eat them anyway. I dont goto parties, I dont drink, and my purchas-ing o gifs is limited because my amily isquite small. (Tis may change i grandchil-dren appear!)

    As a minister, I observe the seasonwith a healthy dose o why. Why arewe doing this, and what does it mean in2015? Scholars tell us that most o what wethink we know about Christmas is basedon earlier traditions, not acts. Even thegospels do not agree about what suppos-edly occurred. Did you know that the

    narrative we call the Christmas story is notound complete in any o the gospels, thatit is actually pulled together rom chaptersound in the gospels o Matthew and Luke and that it is not mentioned at all in thegospels o Mark and John? Did you knowthat the celebration o Christmas wasestablished to correspond with the wintersolstice and traditional Roman estivals,

    not based upon any documentation aboutthe birth o Jesus? Yet, it is a wonderul,awe-inspiring story, and it celebrates thebeginning o a new and remarkable lie.

    Millions o people around the worldlove the Christmas season because o whatit can bring in joy, peace, love and renewedaith. And, I wonder what it means to youtoday? It is worthwhile to give that someheartelt consideration. Perhaps it will bea time or you to give birth to a new andeven more remarkable lie.

    I think o it as a time o renewal, anda time when something very special andunexpected happens. For example, I meetsomeone who offers me an extraordinarygif o insight, a avor done with greatkindness, an expression o generosity, or

    a simple loving gesture. Or it might spectacular rosted morning, remcence with a long-time riend, or heamy avorite holiday songs. Tis year twill be something that makes me tall over, something that shows me thDecember dream lives on in me. It idream o peaceulness, lovingkindgenerosity, and heart-to-heart connec

    It may come when I least expect it, awill stop to notice and appreciate it.

    Horses are strong animals that have been relied upon orcenturies to fill various roles. Once a primary mode otransportation or humans, horses also have helped

    armers tend to their crops and entertained millions on theracetracks.

    Since they are social animals, horses need attention andconsistent care. Keeping a horse is quite a commitment, but its acommitment that can prove very rewarding. Caring or a horsesneeds will help keep the animal happy and healthy. Horses requirebasic daily care that should be tailored to the season.

    ShelterA horse habitat is an area where the animal can escape the elementswhen not grazing. Barns, stalls or even just shade coverings, depend-ing on the area and climate, can make great shelters or horses. Teshelter should not be smaller than 12 square eet. I a shelter is small,the horse will need to get more daily exercise to stretch out.

    Fencing and gates should be secure. Some horses are senough to get out o paddocks or their stalls simply by opethe gate. Chains and locks can help prevent escape artists.

    FoodHorses are grazing animals and are accustomed to eating allI pastures are green and horses are getting enough grass, may not need supplementation with hay.     Similarly, a horse spends most o its time on its eet. A arriershould be called in regularly to inspect hooves and adjust shoesi they are worn.     In my head, Im a very outgoing and adventurous person. I amwilling to try just about anything. In reality, I am getting betterand closer to being the adventurous and outgoing person that

    I want to be and am in my head, but Im not getting there alone.On my journey to become this person that I aim to be, you willfind me second guessing and doubting mysel, watching othersand not thinking I can possibly reach that level, and standing off

    to the side praising and encouraging others to reach their goalsand potential, araid to reach my own. I am a teacher, a helper,a positive ray o sunshine, always willing to help out and have asmile on my ace. Yet, I am terrible at accepting help rom others,asking or help, accepting compliments and praise, or seeing mypotential. It has taken me quite some time to realize that I can, inact, become that person that I imagine and hope to be. For me,

    that means I need a bit o help. Tis help comes in the ormgentle nudges, sometimes a big shove in the direction o whope to achieve and goals I am capable o reaching. It also maccepting help. I now realize that I need the help o people arome who realize my potential, recognize what I want and hopdo, and have the confidence in me that I dont have in mysel Im able to find it.

    I have struggled with allowing mysel to participate, especwhen learning a new apparatus or move that intimidates mturns out that its not that I cant, its that I doubt mysel andmind stops my body rom even being able to try. When I began to learn hoop I had no desire to go anywhere nearapparatus, let alone learn anything on it. It was new, it was dent, it moved in a way that I wasnt used to, and it was increintimidating. Secretly, hoop was also something I was intrigby and desperately wanted to learn. Rather than admitting tthings and realizing that it would take a lot o time and pracI covered my desire to learn with my ear. I just didnt like itwasnt going to learn it. I avoided the apparatus, I avoided trnew things on it, and did the bare minimum that was asked owhen it came to practicing. I allowed mysel to be negative athe experience and get angry with the experience and attathose thoughts to hoop rather than what it really was: my aand disappointment with mysel or being negative and not aling mysel to even try.

    I began to realize that the only thing that was happeningthat I was getting more upset with mysel or not trying than Iwhen I tried and struggled with a move on the hoop. I was becing more intimidated by the apparatus the more I avoided it

    Can you have low blood sugar and not be diabetic or takediabetic drugs or insulin? Te answer is yes. Te symp-toms o non-diabetic low blood sugar can vary rom just

    being tired and irritable, leading to a carbohydrate addiction, toainting and many symptoms in between.

    Te brain uses twice as much blood glucose (sugar) as the othercells in the body. When blood sugar goes too low, it is elt in thebrain first, hence lightheadedness, etc. Ironically, non-diabeticlow blood sugar is caused by too much ast digesting sugar andstarch in the diet, not a shortage.

    Merriam-Webster denes dermatology as the scientic study of the skinand its diseases, but Dr. Kenneth Katz realized long ago that its so muchmore. In fact, his belief in dermatologists ability to treat not only medicalconditions but the emotional response that accompany them is the veryfoundation of his business.

    Previously known as Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, ForefrontDermatology changed its name to more accurately represent what the vast andhighly experienced team of doctors and support sta provide for their patients.

    We chose the word forefront because it really reects the direction ourpractice goes, Dr. Kenneth Katz says. Not only do we accomplish being onthe forefront of dermatology from a treatment and procedural standpoint,were also on the forefront of dermatology in educating our communities.     minutes apply a thick moisturizing cream from the neck down all over yourbody, she says. Repeat that at nighttime prior to pajamas to really lock inmoisture and restore the compromised skin barrier that decreased humidity,and cold and wind creates in our skin.

    She also urges that not all moisturizers are created equal, and has asimple guideline to test whether or not something will truly help dry skin: ifyou can pump it out of a container, its not thick enough. If you scoop it outof a jar, it will be up to the task.

    Winters can be brutal in Wisconsin, but the comforting thought that a

    long, hot shower is a great remedy can prove disastrous for your skin.You want nothing else than to come home to a hot tub, a hot bath or hot

    shower, but its the worst thing you can do for your skin, Dr. Wernli says. Thebest thing you can do is a warm shower and make it short, no longer thanve minutes.

    Is sunscreen really necessary in the winter?I tell my patients sun protection isnt just for the summer, Dr. Peter Katz,dermatologist at Forefront Dermatologys Appleton clinic, says. UltravioletB (UVB) rays are the ones that we oen feel during the summer months the ones that make you feel hot, cause sunburn and the redness that comesalong with it, but theyre not the only thing that contributes to skin cancerand signs of aging like wrinkling and spots.

    In fact, its the ultraviolet A (UVA) rays that are a major cause in signs ofaging such as wrinkles and brown spots and may be just as importantin causing skin cancer as UVB, regardless of being summer or winter. Theymake up 95 percent of the rays that come through from the sun, and do soon cloudy days, even penetrating through the windows of your car; however,they generally dont cause the redness associated with sunburns, so theycan go undetected. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVA raysare present during all daylight hours and throughout the winter months.Although UVA rays are less intense than UVB rays, they are present all yearround and depending upon the time of the year, can be 30 to 50 times moreprevalent than UVB rays.

    I recommend broad spectrum sunscreen all year long especially for the

    face and the tops of the hands, the areas that are most exposed, Dr. PeterKatz explains. Thats where you see most of the damage happening.

    One of the important parts of protecting your skin in the winter is reallyprotecting it against the cold and wind, he adds.

    Skiing, hiking and time in the mountains promotes fun, but also has the

    potential to cause frostbite in those who arent careful. Dr. Peter Katz sugwearing a scarf or facemask to cover your cheeks, and using lip balm with pleum jelly to protect your lips from the dryness that oen occurs in winter.

    To save your ngers and toes, and sometimes the tip of your rewarming aer youre outside is important, he says. Get wet clothinand get your aected ngers and toes in warm water not hot or coldlet them soak for at least 15 minutes.

    Avoid radiators or res, both with the potential to reheat your appages too quickly.

    Do tans prior to sun-flledvacations protect you?Its not uncommon for those of us in the Midwest to want to escapbrutal winters, and that oen means vacations that oer sun, sun and sun! Historically, people have equated a tan as a sign of healthy skin, buDavid Bertler, dermatologist at Forefront Dermatologys De Pere locdebunks that myth and the accompanying idea that using tanning becreate a protective tan is a good idea.

    A tan is your skins response to injury, he explains. When youtanning beds, youre predominantly being exposed to UVA at an acated rate. It causes the pre-existing melanin pigment to immediately dso you believe you have a natural tan. Microscopically, this is a very ptan and not protective. Even a tan achieved by natural sunshine has o4 sun protection factor (SPF) at its best.

    Tanning also causes a more rapid aging process wrinkles, age sne veins on the nose and face, and sagginess resulting from the loelasticity of our skin.

    Instead, he urges us to use other means to protect our skin on vacprotective clothing, high quality wraparound sunglasses (with UVAprotection listed) and hats. Dr. Bertler also suggests that we check thindex, a scale from 1 to 11 that tells us how much ultraviolet light is expthat day. Applying and reapplying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a fof at least 30 is also a signicant tip in caring for your skin.

    You should still use sun protective practices on vacation, Dr. B

    adds. Limit your exposure of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m2 p.m. Sunscreen isnt a shield, it lessens the rate at which you get violet exposure. Even if you use an umbrella, you are still exposed to violet radiation being reected o surfaces like water, sand, snow andconcrete.

    In 1993 a study was launched called the Womens Health Initia-tive. Te study enrolled over 160,000 women aged 50-79 into anumber o randomized clinical trials, testing the health effects

    o hormone therapy, dietary modification, calcium and vitamin Dsupplementation. Te studys goal was to look at the beneficial effectso using these therapies to counteract many o the problems womensee as they age. It was noticed that afer menopause, many women start

    to have many o the problems that men see at an earlier age, such asmore heart trouble and osteoporosis. Te thought was that i women,once they are going through menopause are making less hormones, aregiven hormones, we can reverse these problems or at least stop theirprogression.

    Te study was stopped, though, when it was observed that there wasactually increased risks o breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and bloodclots in women using HR. While the study also ound hormone therapyreduced the risk o ractures and possibly colon cancer, many womenstopped using and many doctors stopped prescribing hormone therapy.

    However, there is great evidence that hormone restoration therapycan help lessen the risk o osteoporosis. One o the problems with thestudy is that the researchers were using hormones that are medicationsand not the hormones that the body produces. Part o the unding orthe study came rom drug companies. While this is good as it providesunding or studies that may not otherwise happen, this also meantthey were providing the hormones they produce. Te source o thoseestrogen hormones came rom pregnant mares. Te other hormoneused was medroxyprogesterone. Tis is a progesterone like medicationused to balance the estrogens in the body. Medroxyprogesterone hasbeen shown to protect the uterus rom excess estrogens; however,there are many other problems with using medroxyprogesterone.
