UNIT 2

CLASIFICATION OF LIVING

THINGS

Page 2: Natural sciences u2

All living things can be clasified according to their characteristics.

Page 3: Natural sciences u2

There are 5 kingdoms: Animal, plant, monera, fungi and

protista.

Page 4: Natural sciences u2

What are the 5 vertebrate groups?

1. the 5 groups are: mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

2. vertebrates are multicellular animals that have a spinal columm.

Page 5: Natural sciences u2

Characteristics of mammals:

Respiration: they breath with lungs. Extremities: they have 4 legs and a tail

but aquatic animals such as whales or dolphins have fins and a tail for swimming.

Reproduction: almost all mammals are viviparous.

Bodies: skin and hair covers mammals. In some animals the hair is thick an is called fur.

Page 6: Natural sciences u2

Characteristics of reptiles: Bodies: they have hard scales but

some have a hard shell. Reproduction: they are oviparous. Respiration: they have lungs. Extremities: they have 4 legs but

snakes are reptiles that dont have legs.

Page 7: Natural sciences u2

Characteristics of fish: Respiration: they have gills. Bodies: their body is covered with

scales. Extremities: they have fins and tails. Reproduction: they are oviparous.

Page 8: Natural sciences u2

Characteristics of birds: Respiration: they have lungs. Bodies: they have aerodynamic bodies

that make it easier to fly. Extremities: birds have 2 legs and 2

wings. Reproduction :they are oviparous.

Page 9: Natural sciences u2

Characteristics of amphibians:

Bodies: they have smooth and thin skin.

Respiration:1.When they are young, they have gills.2.When they are adults, they have lungs Extremities: they have 4 legs and a

tail. Reproduction : they are oviparous.

What are the 6 invertebrates groups?

Molluscs : they have soft bodies,a hard shell, gills and they lay eggs.

Coelenterates: they have soft bodies, and some tentacles; they absorb oxygen through their skin, they reproduce by growing a bud or a small part.

Porifera:soft bodie with pores, they eat with the pores.

Page 11: Natural sciences u2

Echinoderms: bodies covered with sharp spikes and some have arms or tentacles ,absorb water with gills and others through skin they are oviparous.

Arthropods: they have an exoskeleton. Some have lungs and others gills, they are oviparous.

Annelids: soft bodie, some absorb water through their skin and others with gills they reproduce like porifera and others are oviparous.

How can we clasify plants? We clasify them into seed plant and

non-seed plant. Angiosperms and gymnosperms are

seed plants. Ferns and mosses are non-seed plants.

Monera, fungi and protista. Fungi:Mushrooms ,mould and yeast are

all fungi. They have several charteristics in common.

Monerans:they are microscopic, but not all have the same characteristics.

Protista:algae and protozoa belong to this kingdom. There is a wide variety of protists. Each type has specific characteristics.
