Ironman triathlete, Max Burdick, competed or years, but was never able to nish atriathlon. Ten he began supplementing his diet with BioAstin, a brand o NaturaAstaxanthin, and at 75 years old he was able to nish. He still competes at age 78.

Natural Astaxanthin is responsible or the amazing strength, endurance and color o

Salmon. For over 10 years, health scientists have been studying this wonderul ingredientIn his Introduction to the book, co-author Bob Capelli wrote:

We are just beginning to understand the wonderul health benets that NaturaAstaxanthin (pronounced asta-ZAN-thin) can bring to humans, as well as animalsWhile many studies have already been done, there is still potential or a great deal moreto be discovered. I oresee a time not too long rom now when Astaxanthin (althoughdicult to pronounce) becomes a household word. For twenty years I have been involvedwith natural supplements and herbs, and I have to say that I have never been as excitedabout any other natural product as I am about Natural Astaxanthin. Scientists have notound any substance that has stronger antioxidant eects or ree radical elimination

or singlet oxygen quenching, and as the impressive anti-inammatory properties oAstaxanthin become more widely researched and recognized, a whole new channel orthe use o Astaxanthin in human nutrition is opening. Medical researchers are ndinglinks between inammation and a myriad o lie threatening and debilitating diseasesTe necessity o combating this silent inammation is becoming more apparent eachyear. At the same time, scientists continue to prove that supplementing with antioxidantsis essential to lengthening and improving the quality o our lives.

    What is Natural Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a member o the carotenoids, which are the pigments that give beautiu

colors to many o the oods we eat. Carotenoids are divided into two groups: Caroteneand Xanthophylls o which Astaxanthin is a member. Te dierence between thetwo groups is that the Xanthophylls have hydroxyl groups at the end o the molecule.Astaxanthin has more hydroxyl groups than other xanthophylls, which allow it to domore in the human body.

Some o the many things that Natural Astaxanthin can do that beta carotene (and manyother carotenoids) cannot:

    1. Cross the blood-brain barrier and bring antioxidant and anti-inammatory protectionto the brain and central nervous system

    2. Cross the blood-retinal barrier and bring antioxidant and anti-inammatoryprotection to the eyes

    3. ravel throughout the body eectively to bring antioxidant and anti-inammatoryprotection at a high activity level to all the organs and the skin

    4. Span the cell membranes

    5. Bond with muscle tissue

    6. Work as a super-powerul antioxidant and quickly eliminate ree radicals andneutralize singlet oxygen.

Tere are over 700 dierent carotenoids. Tey are produced in nature byplankton, algae and plants as well as a small number o bacteria and ungi. Inplants and algae, carotenoids are actually part o the process o photosynthesisalong with chlorophyll. Some animals can actually eat a certain carotenoidand then convert it in their body into a dierent carotenoid, but all animalsmust originally obtain carotenoids rom their diet." (Quoted rom theoriginal text)

Astaxanthin can be ound in plants and animals. It is most prevalent in algae andphytoplankton. Any sea animals with a red or pinkish color, such as salmon, troutlobster, shrimp and crab will also have Astaxanthin. Tese animals eat krill and othe

organisms that ingest Astaxanthin-containing algae and plankton.

    Worlds Strongest Antioxidant

Natural Astaxanthin has proven to be the worlds strongest antioxidant. Here are aew o the test results:

Astaxanthin antioxidant strength was 550 times stronger than vitamin E insinglet oxygen quenching.

Astaxanthin was 11 times stronger than beta-carotene in singlet

    oxygen quenching.

Astaxanthin was 3 times stronger than Lutein as an antioxidant targetingsinglet oxygen.

Natural Astaxanthin was 14.3 times stronger than vitamin E as a reeradical scavenger.

BioAstin was 17 times stronger than Pycnogenol.

20.9 times stronger than Synthetic Astaxanthin

    53.7 times stronger than beta-carotene.

64.9 times stronger than Vitamin C.

    Free Radicals and Singlet Oxygen

Free radicals are ormed when weak chemical bonds split. Free radicals are veryunstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the neededelectron to gain stability. Generally, ree radicals attack the nearest stable moleculestealing its electron. When the attacked molecule loses its electron, it becomes a

ree radical itsel, beginning a chain reaction. Once the process is started, it can cascadenally resulting in the disruption o a living cell. Internally, ree radicals damage tissueand can adversely aect the bodys immune system. Tey weaken and can destroy cellsand the DNA in the cells.

Oxygen is an element and a vitally important substance or lie on Earth, and especially orhuman lie. Living organisms need oxygen or most, i not all, o their cellular unctionsOn the other hand, oxygen can produce metabolites that are toxic and potentiallylethal to the same cells. Being reactive and chemically unstable, reactive oxygen species(ROS) are the most important metabolites that initiate reduction and oxidation (redoxreactions under physiological conditions. Oxygen in its excited singlet state (1O2) isprobably the most important intermediate in such reactions.

Singlet oxygen is linked to oxidation o LDL cholesterol and resultant cardiovasculareects. Polyphenol antioxidants can scavenge and reduce concentrations o reactiveoxygen species and may prevent such deleterious oxidative eects. (http://en.wikipedia

    org/wiki/Singlet_oxygen)

    Antioxidants: A Daily Regimen

Tere are many dierent types o antioxidants available in ruits and vegetablesAntioxidants are best taken with a variety o other antioxidants, as there is a synergisticbenet. In order to ensure proper antioxidant protection, we should:

Eat a good diet each day with lots o resh ruits and vegetables, preerably up tonine servings.

    ake a high quality multivitamin.

ake a green ood supplement like Spirulina.

ake a powerul antioxidant like Natural Astaxanthin.

    Natural Astaxanthin vs. synthetic Astaxanthin

BioAstin rom Cyanotech Corp is extracted rom Haematococcus Pluvialis microalgaewhich also produces small quantities o other supporting Carotenoids. Te resultingbreakdown is as ollows:

    1. Esteried Astaxanthin 80 percent

    2. Beta-carotene 6 percent

    3. Free Astaxanthin 5 percent

    4. Canthaxanthin CoA about 5 percent

    5. Lutein 4 percent

Synthetic Astaxanthin is produced in the laboratory rom petrochemicals. It thereorelacks the above listed additional supporting carotenoids, which work in synergy tomake Natural Astaxanthin a more eective antioxidant than Astaxanthin.

    Sae Natural Anti-inammatory

Many anti-inammatories, such as aspirin ylenol, Vioxx and Celebrex haveundesirable side eects. Te American journal o Medicine reported that non-steroidal anti-inammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to roughly 16,500 deathsand more than 100,000 hospitalizations each year! (Singh, G, 1998)

A word o warning here: Astaxanthin may not work as strongly nor as quickly asVioxx, however it is a sae, natural alternative.

People may not see benets in pain relie or increased strength and mobility ortwo to our weeks afer taking Astaxanthin.

As many as 25 percent o people may have reduced results.

Natural remedies are not as concentrated as prescription medications, so theywon't work overnight.

Due to the dierent metabolisms and the dierent types o bodies people have, they may not work perectly or everyone.

In dierent clinical studies on inammatory conditions, Natural Astaxanthin hasbeen shown to be very eective or the majority o people, although there are some

who don't get the desired results. Tis is also true with prescription drugs such asVioxx and Celebrex, and over-the-counter products such as aspirin and ylenol, where there are also people who don't get results. With these products there may bedangerous side eects.

Natural Astaxanthin has never been shown to have any negative side eect norcontraindication other than a slight orange color in the palms and soles o the eetdue to doses ar above the recommended 4 - 12 mg per day. Tis is due to the pigmentin Astaxanthin depositing in the skin, which is a good thing since it is what allowsAstaxanthin to work as an internal sunscreen.

    Pre-clinical Animal Trials

    Decrease in blood pressure

Supplementation with natural Astaxanthin or 14 days signicantly reduced

blood pressure in hypertensive rats, Hussein, et al, 2005 a.

Supplementation with natural Astaxanthin or ve weeks signicantly reducedblood pressure in hypertensive rats and delayed incidence o stroke, Hussein, etal, 2005 a.

It was ound that the mechanism or reducing blood pressure might be itsmodulating eect on nitrous oxide (Hussein, et al, 2005 b).

    Lowering Cholesterol

Hypertensive rats that were ed Astaxanthin increased their HDL, decreased theirtriglycerides, lowered their blood pressure and showed positive eects on keyindictors o diabetes (Hussein, et al, 2006).

Decreased heart damage rom exercise and heart attacks

Mice that were ed Astaxanthin then ran on a treadmill until exhaustion showedless heart damage than those that were not ed Astaxanthin (Aoi, et al, 2003).

Astaxanthin ed to mice prior to heart attacks signicantly reduced the area oinarction and the damage caused to the heart by the heart attack (Gross and

    Lockwood, 2004).

    Ulcers, Gastric Injury, Stomach Cancer

Mice inected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a very destructive bacteriaound in the stomachs o hal o the world's population, that were ed NaturaAstaxanthin had reduced bacterial load and gastric inammation (Bennedsen, etal, 1999).

Mice inected with H. pylori that were ed Haematococcus algae meal showedlower bacteria levels and lower inammation scores than the untreated mice when

tested one day afer and ten days afer the cessation o the treatment (Wang, et al2000).

Rats that were given naprocin, which is known to cause ulcerative lesions inthe stomach, were ed Astaxanthin in three dierent dosage levels. All realizedsignicant protection against naproxens deleterious eects on the stomach lining(Kim, et al, 2005).

Rats that were ed ethyl alcohol, the active ingredient in whiskey, rum, vodkaetc., which can cause ulcerative gastric lesions in humans when consumed inexcess showed similar results. Te eects o Astaxanthin on ethyl alcohol showed

"Tree dierent orms o Astaxanthin - Natural Astaxanthin rom Haematococcus

microalgae, Astaxanthin rom the mutated yeast Phaa Rhodiza, and Astaxanthinsynthesized rom petrochemicals - along with Vitamin C and beta carotene, on theiulcer preventative abilities in stressed rats. Rats were subjected to two dierent typeso stress that cause ulcers. Te rats ed all orms o Astaxanthin as well as beta-carotenewere appreciably protected rom the ormation o gastric ulcerations. Howeveran extremely signicant result o this research was that 'Ulcer indexes in particularwere smaller with the rat group ed Astaxanthin extracted rom Haematococcuthan the other groups.' Te research urther showed that by combining Astaxanthinand Vitamin C 'protected against the evolution o gastric ulcerations in relation tocontrol rats. Te eects were more intense, especially in rats simultaneously suppliedAstaxanthin and Vitamin C. Te simultaneous supplementation o ood substance

with Astaxanthin and Vitamin C would supply enough antioxidants to oset stressrelated injuries' (Nishikawa, et al, 2005)."

    Detoxifcation

Te liver and kidneys help to detoxiy the body by removing harmul substances. Oneo the key unctions o the liver is the oxidation o ats to produce energy. Te liver alsodestroys pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and eliminates dead red blood cells. Teseunctions can release volumes o ree radicals. It is very important to have the protectiono neutralizing antioxidants in the liver to combat this oxidative process

In one study, it was ound that Astaxanthin was a much more eective antioxidant orrat liver cells than vitamin E. (Kurashige, et al, 1990).

Astaxanthin also causes the liver to produce certain enzymes that may help preventthe ormation o liver cancer (Gradelet, et al, 1998).

Liver benets were also observed in rats in 2001, where the antioxidant properties oAstaxanthin appeared to protect the rats rom liver damage. An increase in superoxidedismutase (SOD) and glutathione was ound in the rats' livers (Kang, et al, 2001).

    Cancer Prevention and Tumor Reduction

Because beta-carotene has been shown to reduce levels o cancers in people, it seemslogical that the possibility exists that beta-carotenes cousin, Natural Astaxanthin, couldproduce similar results. Animal studies have shown positive results:

Mouse tumor cells put into a solution supplemented with Astaxanthin and into thesame solution without Astaxanthin.,Afer one and two days, it was ound that thetumor cells in the Astaxanthin solution had lower cell numbers and a lower DNAsynthesis rate (Sun, et al, 1998).

In a study o mouse breast tumor cells, researchers ound that Astaxanthinreduced the prolieration o the tumor cells by 40 percent depending on dosage(Kim, et al, 2001).

A very interesting study compared Astaxanthin against eight other carotenoids

to see which was most eective at inhibiting liver tumor cells in culture. It wasound that Astaxanthin surpassed all eight carotenoids (Kozuki, 2000).

Astaxanthin in vitro has been ound to also inhibit the prolieration o humancancer cell lines. Human colon cancer cell lines were placed in a culturecontaining Astaxanthin versus one that was Astaxanthin ree. Afer our days, the cell lines in the culture containing Astaxanthin were signicantly less viable(Onogi, et al, 1998).

A similar study was done to see at what stage the Astaxanthin would haveits positive eects. It was ound that when Astaxanthin supplementation

was started, both at one week and also at three weeks prior to the tumorinoculation, growth was inhibited. However, when the supplementationwith Astaxanthin began at the same time as the tumor inoculation, thebeneit was not ound. he conclusion o this study was that Astaxanthinmay work better in the early stages o tumor development, but not in the laterstages. he researcher was very enthused with the potential o Astaxanthinin cancer prevention, pointing out that the anti-tumor activity came at bloodconcentration levels that are achievable. his study also pointed out that, unlike chemotherapy drugs, the ability o Astaxanthin to reduce tumorscannot be due to toxicity. Even dietary concentrations as high as 2 percentdid not induce toxicity in rats, mice or errets. he theory espoused by these

researchers rom the University o Minnesota's School o Medicine is thatthe anti-tumor activity o Astaxanthin is related to its enhancement o theimmune response (Jyonouchi, et al, 2000).

Te three primary mechanisms o action that enables Astaxanthin to prevent cancerand shrink tumors can be any or all o these (Rousseau, et al, 1992):

    Its potent biological antioxidant action

Its abilities as an immune system enhancer

Its action as a gene expression regulator

    Help or Diabetics

Te research in the area o diabetes has not yet been tested in humans. Logically, since silent inammation can cause diabetes, and since Astaxanthin can helpreduce silent inammation, the use o Astaxanthin should have some benet inpreventing diabetes and helping people with diabetes. Human clinical trials areneeded to prove this, but in the meantime there has been some very encouragingwork in rodent models.

    Natural Astaxanthin: King of the

    Carotenoids

Four studies took place in Japan at the Kyoto University o Medicine and at the Instituteo Natural Medicine. Te rst study examined a special type o mice that are diabeticand obese, a generally accepted model or type 2 diabetic humans. Results demonstratedthat Astaxanthin signicantly reduced the blood glucose level o these mice. It urthershowed that the Astaxanthin-treated groups maintained their ability to secrete insulin

and concluded: Tese results indicate that Astaxanthin can exert benecial eects indiabetes, with preservation o beta-cell unction (Uchiyama, et al, 2002).

Diabetes adversely aects many dierent organs o the body. In particular, diabetes cancause the kidneys to malunction, causing a condition called nephropathy. Tis secondstudy used the same diabetic and obese mice to examine how Astaxanthin could benetthe kidneys. Te results: Afer 12 weeks o treatment, the Astaxanthin-treated groupshowed lower blood glucose compared with the non-treated group...treatment withAstaxanthin ameliorated the progression and acceleration o diabetic nephropathy inthe rodent model o type 2 diabetes. Te results suggested that the antioxidant activityo Astaxanthin reduced the oxidative stress on the kidneys and prevented renal cel

damage. In conclusion, administration o Astaxanthin might be a novel approach or theprevention o diabetic nephropathy (Naito, et al, 2004).

Te third study in rats that touched on diabetes showed that afer 22 weeks, Astaxanthinreduced blood pressure and improved cholesterol and triglyceride proles, but it alsoshowed a reduction in blood glucose levels. A signicant reduction in asting bloodglucose levels as well as insulin resistance was noted, along with improvement in insulinsensitivity. A ascinating notation was made that Astaxanthin actually decreased thesize o at cells. Tese results suggest that Astaxanthin ameliorates insulin resistanceby mechanisms involving the increase o glucose uptake and by modulating the level ocirculating lipid metabolites and adiponectin (Hussein, et al, 2006).

A recent study in diabetic mice showed that Astaxanthin decreased expression levels ogenes extracted rom the kidneys. Tis research may lead to a better understanding othe genes and pathways involved in the anti-diabetic mechanism o Astaxanthin (Naitoet al, 2006).

Trying to Have a Baby? Give your Husband Natural Astaxanthin!

Another benet o Natural Astaxanthin is its ability to help couples conceive.

In the 1990s, a company in Sweden called AstaCarotene sponsored studies o the ability

o Natural Astaxanthin to improve conception in pigs and horses. Te logical conclusionwas that Natural Astaxanthin somehow worked to make the males sperm more potent(Lignell and Inboor, 2000).

Researchers have recently taken the next logical step and tested Natural Astaxanthin(as AstaCarox by AstaCarotene) in human couples that wanted babies but couldntconceive. Tey took twenty couples that were trying to conceive or a minimum o atleast twelve months. Afer three months o daily supplementation o a high dose o 16mg per day o Natural Astaxanthin, ve out o ten couples conceived. ests o the menssemen showed that sperm motility, velocity and morphology improved or the mentaking Astaxanthin (Comhaire and Mahmoud, 2003, and Comhaire, et al, 2005).

Another study showed similar results. In this study the researchers concluded thatsupplementation with Natural Astaxanthin improved the quality o the spermatozoawhich is suggested to be the plausible explanation or the increased requency oconception (Garem et al, 2002).

It is wonderul to think that many inertile couples dreams o having children maybe realized by taking a ew Natural Astaxanthin capsules each day, rather than goingthrough expensive therapies and may still not yield the desired result. .
