Fiscal Year is September 1 to August 31 The following facts and figures represent this year compared to last year. The average weekly envelopes used in November were 772 compared to 734 last year. Total gross contributions received for November were $121,969.44 compared to $115.290.48 last year, of which $109,501.44 was the “Weekend/Monthly Collection” versus $110,305.48. $6,047.54 was loose cash not in envelopes compared to $5,832.00. The special collections were $12,468.00 this year and $7,607.00 last year. Special collections included $4,126.00 for the Family Justice Center, $80.00 for the October Mission Sunday, $2,473.00 for Human Development, $1,305.00 for the Catholic University, $610.00 for Christmas Flowers, and $3,874.00 for St. Vincent DePaul Society. Once again our heartfelt thanks to all parishioners for your support and generosity in our Parish “Stewardship in Faith” program; please remember your commitment to Time, Talent and Treasure.

STEWARDSHIP We have just completed our stewardship renewal for 2011. There are probably still families that have not committed to the “Stewardship in Faith” program as a way of life, as there are some families who did and are not sure if they did the right thing. One of the key words of the program is “Faith”. We all know that Faith is one of the toughest beliefs for us to follow, yet the Oxford dictionary defines it as: “complete trust or confidence”. Most stewardship program renewals only get a 30 to 35 per cent response to pledge cards and then only a 25 to 35 percent increase in the treasure aspect of stewardship. What we are asking is that in Faith, we commit to a different way of life of Stewardship, which we have been talking about for several months. The guidelines for this treasure commitment were written in last month’s newsletter. Besides our commitment to treasure let us not forget the same for time of prayer and the wise use of our talents. There are several needs of the parish for ushers, counters, stuffers, adorers for the Adoration Chapel, Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors. The main purpose of this month’s article is not solely on the commitment to stewardship but also evangelization. Stewardship and evangelization go hand in hand as stewardship of the parish leads parishioners to share in the work of evangelization or proclaiming the Good News. Nativity of Our Lord held three workshops on evangelization in November and the topics included revitalizing the spiritual life of the parish, inviting—welcoming and reaching out, and transforming the world with the Gospel. Every member of Nativity is called to evangelize and the practice of authentic Christian stewardship which inevitably leads to evangelization. So let us now go and reach out to others in charity and humility and spread the Good News especially given the time of the year. Let us all be little drummer boys in welcoming Christ our Savior.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES The annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) or Bishops Overseas Appeal will be held in all the parishes of our Diocese the weekend of January 29/30. It is Catholic Relief Services, established by the American Bishops, that has responded across the world in re-establishing life support systems, providing emergency medical care and the technical know-how to rebuild. It responds with short-term help for an emergency, and long-term help to combat the cause of the emergency. In the midst of our own challenging times, there are still others who suffer to the very brink of death. Our continued support of Catholic Relief Services can and does save lives and helps create a quality of life, which may be otherwise impossible. Please be generous in your response to the Catholic Relief Services collection. You do make a difference when and where it counts. This is the premier relief agency in the world. Please place in the second collection basket.

FROM FATHER BERNARD For over ten years Dan Marmion has labored with three pastors in his unselfish position on the Finance Committee of our parish. His counsel, advice, and his intuitive questions have always been given with grace and respect. Dan’s collaboration with me in February/March 2008 set the stage for putting our house in order. Normally, terms are for 3 or 5 years but his counsel and experience was sorely needed through our parish financial darkest days. As a parish we are indebted to him and forever grateful. P.S.—Dan’s counsel remains with me and we both intend further collaboration on financial issues. Semper Fidelis.

PRE-CANA MINISTRY MEMBERS NEEDED The Diocese of Buffalo requires all engaged couples to participate in a marriage preparation program approximately six months prior to their wedding date. There is a one day program available to engaged couples at Nativity of Our Lord Parish. The Pre-Cana team would like to increase the number of couples involved in this ministry. If you would like to share your faith and enthusiasm for marriage with couples who are soon to be wed, please call Kathy Todtenhagen at 662-9050. The time commitment is 1-2 Saturdays a year for approximately 8 hours. Training and materials are provided. This is a very rewarding ministry. The couples involved always note that their own marriages are rejuvenated after a Pre-Cana session. This is an excellent way to offer stewardship to your parish of both time and talent.

WELCOME Please welcome the following new members to our Nativity of Our Lord Parish Community: Michael Pastrick, Jane & Thomas Weinert, Angela & Michael Ginnitti, Laurin & Brad Derrick, Julie & John Cordier.

DISCIPLES OF DIVINE MERCY Disciples of Divine Mercy will come and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for your loved one who may be sick or dying. For more information call Terry at 662-2323 or Patricia at 662-4931.

WON’T YOU PLEASE TAKE AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME TO HELP SAVE A LIFE?

The Red Cross bloodmobile will be in the Nativity school cafeteria on Monday, January 17 from 1:30 until 6:30pm. We are looking for at least 50 donors to help us reach our goal. Please plan to join us on January 17. Call Jim Feldmann at 662-2400 for details.

Nativity News January, 2011 ~ 3 ~

BLESSINGS FOR CHRISTMAS Blessing of Christmas Manger or Nativity scene: Sign of the Cross, then Leader A: Praised be Jesus Christ, who dwells among us, now and forever. R. Amen

Leader B: When we look upon these figures, the Christmas gospel comes alive and we are moved to rejoice in the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God.

Leader A: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love; when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives He brings joy and peace, justice, mercy and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to Him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. R. amen

Leader B: May Christ our God enlighten our hearts and minds, now and forever. R. amen

Blessing of a Christmas tree: Sign of the Cross, then Leader A: Let us glorify Christ our Light, who brings salvation and peace into our midst, now and forever. R. amen

Leader B: Amidst signs and wonders Christ Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea; His birth brings joy to our hearts and enlightenment to our minds. With this tree, decorated and adorned, may we welcome Christ among us; may its lights guide us to the perfect light.

Leader A: Holy Lord, we come with joy to celebrate the birth of your Son, who rescued us from the darkness of sin by making the cross a tree of life and light. May this tree, arrayed in splendor, remind us of the life-giving cross of Christ, that we may always rejoice in the new life that shines in our hearts. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R amen. Leader: Lord Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary, All: We welcome you, O Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus, hope of the shepherds and the poor, All: We welcome you, O Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus, glory of the angels, All: We welcome you, O Lord. Leader: May the God of glory fill our hearts with peace and joy, now and forever. R. amen

House Blessing (from Dec. 26-Jan. 6) Sign of the Cross, then Leader A: Blessed are you, O Lord God of all creation, by the guidance of a star you led the Magi to your Son and by the light of faith you bring us to know Him as Lord, the Messiah you have sent. (Using chalk over a doorway mark as follows: 20+C+M+B+11 [current year and initials of legendary names of the Magi]).

Leader: May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us; and may we seek to serve Christ in everyone we meet.

Leader: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. R. amen

Leader: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. R. amen

ENGAGED COUPLES The Diocese of Buffalo requires all engaged couples to participate in a marriage preparation program approximately six months prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office at 662-9339 to register.

PREPARING FOR 2011-2012 Together with Fr. Nowak, we have asked the present faculty to return next year. I am appreciative of all the advice, counsel and recommendations from committees, parents and alumni. This year 2nd grade has the most students and there is a need for two classes for Grade 3 next year. The remaining grades are either in the high teens or low twenties. We are committed to not inflate these classes beyond their capacity, nor accept students who may be disruptive to the character of the classroom community. All incoming students will be interviewed with parents. Young parents have specifically asked that character, faith formation, and catholic identity be strengthened. Nativity of Our Lord School has received the findings of the diocesan studies from outside, independent consultants that strongly affirm the viability of our future. We remain a unique community with accredited, accomplished teachers for religion in all grade levels. Our commitment remains to mold future leaders for the church and promote a moral compass for society. Nativity of Our Lord graduates continue to enjoy the affirmation of HS principals, admissions directors, guidance counselors and teachers for their excellent study habits, deportment, and academic achievements. A good percentage of our students receive Scholarships to High Schools.

NATIVITY SCHOOL NEWS Nativity students brought in gifts for the Joan Male Family Center in South Buffalo and the Alliance for the Mentally Ill for Christmas. Grades K-5 donated clothes and toys for the children at the Family Center and grades 6, 7 and 8 brought in clothes and games for middle and high school students who are in Psychiatric Hospitals. Thank you all for your very generous donations. Catholic School’s Week is January 31st-February 4th. The 8th grade class will be planning the week and it looks to be very exciting. We will have Open House and Registration for new families on Thursday, February 3rd from 9-11am and 6-8pm. Nativity’s Annual Talent Show will be February 10th at 7:00pm. All are welcome.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH FAITH FORMATION

Nativity Faith Formation continues to grow into an array of diverse and varied opportunities for the children and teens of our parish. It thrives on varied contributions of the gifts and talents of the entire parish community. Additional catechists are always welcome to share their faith with the youth of our parish. Please consider one of the following: Children’s Connection: Elementary children from 1st to 6th grade with sessions on Mon., (4-5pm), Wed., (4-5pm) or Wed., (5:30-6:30pm) in the Nativity school classrooms. Promise groups consist of only 1st grade children, Good News groups consist of 2nd and 3rd grade children combined, and lastly, Venture groups can be groups of 4th and 5th graders combined or groups of 5th and 6th graders combined. Story telling, prayer, and fun activities relate Children’s Connection and the Sunday Scriptures to a family living with weekly lectionary based catechesis by Pflaum publications. Pflaum Gospel Weeklies come complete with easy to use plans and child development information for the catechists. Y.E.S. (Youth Engaging Scripture): For 7th and 8th grade youth featuring a dynamic large group format where youth explore the message of Christ and its meaning for today. Teens take up hands- on activities to actively engage with the Scriptures, and are invited to personally respond with a variety of small group activities. Music, Friends, Faith, and Food complete the makeup of the Y.E.S. Community. The group gathers on Thurs. nights from 7-8pm in the school cafeteria. Each catechist mentors the same cluster of 8 to 10 teens throughout the year and takes turns with the other catechists presenting to the entire group. Y.E.S. catechists attend and act as mentors each week, but sign up to prepare and present only once every 8 to 10 weeks. The format for Y.E.S. sessions is flexible but generally begins with a gathering activity, followed by lectionary-based guide by Saint Mary’s Press. Involvement with junior high faith development is energetic. It can reach the heights of joy and the depths of sorrow. By our sharing the word of God with them, they discover that they are connected with God and with others through their faith community. L.O.F.T.: Learning Our Faith Together is the name of our high school faith formation. L.O.F.T. meets weekly in the Break Out Room on the first floor of Nativity School with additional monthly activities and events:

First Sunday of the month, meeting with Noon Mass, 11:15-12:45

Remaining Sunday meetings, 11:15-11:55am Monthly activities and service events (see L.O.F.T. schedule)

In a lectionary based conversational setting, leaders, and teens of L.O.F.T. focus on learning to discern and communicate the message of Christ for our world today, discovering our gifts, and seeking an awareness of the movements of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the world around us. The goals for L.O.F.T. are to:

Foster and encourage a desire for Christ in the Eucharist Seek meaning for our lives in the essential teachings of the Gospel Call the teens to discipleship

Children in the Catecumenate: Occasionally, we receive a call from a family explaining all the reasons that their older child has not been baptized. For these families, the first step is to place the child in the regular faith formation sessions. In addition, children that have not received any catechesis, and have not been baptized need to be initiated into the Catholic faith. These families are given a workbook for the Christian Initiation of Children and specific assignments from that book. The parent(s) and the child then meet a number of times with a catechist from our parish to be sure the child understands the sacrament(s) they will be receiving. This process ideally begins in September with the baptism (and sometimes First Eucharist) planned for the Easter Vigil. The meeting with, and guiding these families through this faith journey with their child is a highly rewarding experience and we are in need of particular individuals to volunteer for this special ministry. Building Our Community: Faith communities are built on relationships while relationships grow and develop through sharing. Members of the larger faith community are especially welcome to speak to any group of children throughout the year. If you would like to talk to the children, but are unable to make a regular long-term commitment to the ministry of catechesis, please contact the Faith Formation Office (662-2169) to discuss the possibility of being a guest speaker at one of our sessions.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Will new appliances or furniture be under your Christmas tree this year? Please consider donating your used items to St. Vincent dePaul. The SVDP truck is in the Southtowns every Thursday picking up donations. Call the SVDP office downtown at 881-3360 ext. 4 to schedule a pickup at your home. The most desperately needed items are refrigerators, stoves and washing machines in working order. Basic furniture such as beds, mattresses, tables, chairs and couches are also in high demand. Thank you for donating generously to the St. Vincent dePaul collection on Thanksgiving. Volunteers from the Nativity of Our Lord SVDP conference recently visited a young, working single Mom with three children using a plastic cooler because she could not afford a refrigerator. Another client was an older woman who had a kidney transplant but was sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Thanks to your contributions, we were able to buy a used refrigerator and a bed frame to make a small improvement in these people’s lives. Clothing donations can be dropped off in the blue bin behind the school (Thorn Ave. entrance). Cash donations in the Poor Box in the vestibule are most welcome and appreciated! New members are welcome at our monthly meetings. The next meeting is January 26th in the Msgr. Holbel Center at 7pm. Call Myra at 662-1932 for more information.

NEEDED: GENEROUS PEOPLE TO SHARE TIME AND TALENTS— FALL 2011 CONFIRMATION PROGRAM

We are looking for people of all ages (college age and up, men or women) to volunteer in preparing our young people to receive this final sacrament of initiation, Confirmation. This is a worthwhile and personally enriching experience with minimal time investment. Our Confirmation sessions run for eight Mondays between mid-Sept. through early Nov. 2011. All sessions meet from 7:00-8:30pm. Each volunteer is asked to be a facilitator at a table of approximately 8 candidates. One or two sessions may include a speaker and discussion while other sessions are solely led by the volunteers. Background information, lesson plans, and moral support are provided. YOU can do it! If you think that you may be interested in this special ministry, please email Dolores Kosinski, the Confirmation Coordinator, at [email protected] OR call the Faith Formation Office at 662-2169 and leave your name and phone number. You will be contacted at a later date to answer any questions you may have. This program works only because we have such wonderful people in this parish who are willing to give of their time and of themselves. In giving of yourself to this program, you will receive much more than you could every imagine. Please consider joining us!
