    The Kurukshetra University was established in 1956 as aunitary residential university and its foundation stone waslaid by late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Indiato whom Dr. B. R. Ambedkar ,(Chief architect of Indian

    Constitution) submitted the Constitution on 26November, 1949 which was adopted by the ConstituentAssembly and signed by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. In the north-east of the University there is an old 'Buddha-stupa' which preserves the heritage and culture of Buddhist era.The university is situated in old Thanesar City which washeaded by the Buddha-Samrat Harshavardhan. Overand above the university has a beautiful green campus which extends over an area of 400 acres.

    The Centre for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Studies was set up in

    Kurukshetra University in June, 1992 to mark thecentenary celebrations of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao RamjiAmbedkar who played an important role in theconstitutional development and emancipation of thedeprived classes. The objectives of the centre include tostudy the work of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar scientifically and

    objectively, to understand Dr. Ambedkar's relevance today,to study problems such as untouchability, social injusticeetc. in the light of his ideas, to collect and publish writingsand speeches on Dr. Ambedkar, to bring out publications interms of books and journals devoted to his life and thesubjects in which he was interested in and to propagate thephilosophy of Dr. Ambedkar among the society, toencourage students of M.Phil and Ph.D courses and otherscholars to work on Dr. Ambedkar and Dalit literature, toorganize seminars, symposia, lectures and competitions onDr. Ambedkar's life, work and ideology and to provide a

    commonplatform to the scholars working on Dr. Ambedkar'sthoughts in India and abroad to share their views andexperiences.

    Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born in an untouchablefamily and subjected to consistent caste baseddiscrimination by the Hindu society, became first talented

    person of the world as per the analysis made by CambridgeUniversity, London. Eventually, Dr. B. R. Ambedkargained a reputation as a world scholar and advocatedpolitical and social rights and freedoms for untouchables.He is regarded as a Bodhisattva by Buddhists, though henever claimed himself to be a Bodhisattva. Ambedkar

    emerged as a powerful jurist, political leader, Buddhistactivist, philosopher, thinker, anthropologist, historian,orator, prolific writer, economist, scholar, editor,revolutionary and a revivalist for Buddhism in India. Hewas the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Dr. B. R.Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharatratna ,India's highest civilian award, in 1990. So, the presentseminar is an attempt to critically evaluate the relevance of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's vision and mission in presentscenario and to prepare an extensive vision and missiondocument for the times to come. Thus, the objective of the

    seminar as follows:1. To understand the vision and mission of Dr. B. R.Ambedkar.

    2. To promote the ideas on social, economic,political, religious, human rights & constitutionalreforms by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

    3. To expand a model based on the critical evaluationof Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's vision and mission oneducation (higher, professional & technical) &weaker sections of the society.

    4. To explore the potentiality in Ambedkarism in

    Literature to strengthen the society and Indiannational spirit.

    AIM & OBJECTIVESOF THE SEMINAR

    I know today we are divided politically,socially and economically. We are in warringcamps and I am probably one of the leaders of awarring camp. But with all this I am convincedthat, given time and circumstances, nothing in theworld will prevent this country from becomingone, and, with all our castes and creeds, I have nothesitation in saying that we shall in some form bea united people".
