Fostering creative, rich and purposeful lives through music!

Page 2: National Impact Report - Little Kids Rock: Music education

Who We AreWhat began as a teacher-led, grassroots effort in one classroom, has grown to become the leading nonprofit provider of free music education and instruments to our nation’s under-served K-12 public schools. Over the last 12 years, we have given away millions of dollars in teacher trainings, educational resources and instruments.

What We DoWe partner with school districts to offer a unique, teacher-led music program that pairs our comprehensive resources with free instruments to revolutionize the way music is taught and experienced. The program incorporates instruments and vocals to teach kids music they already know and love – styles including rock, pop, hip-hop, and reggae – performed on acoustic, electric and bass guitars, keyboards and drums. This makes music education engaging and accessible for kids on day one, empowering them to pick up an instrument and begin playing, improvising and expressing themselves immediately.

Who We ServeWe target under-served communities where public schools have cut back or eliminated their music education programs. Even where traditional programs do exist, many schools are eager to establish a program that complements their traditional music education offerings to engage today’s youth. For schools unable to accommodate dedicated music faculty, we work with other qualified teachers in those schools to offer Modern Band in the after-school setting, giving young people a healthy creative outlet during the critical hours between 3:00–5:00p.m, when children need structured, supervised activity.

Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going

Mission: We won’t rest until every student has the opportunity to unlock their inner music maker.

“We are excited because we have been working with Little Kids Rock for many years at this point and we’ve seen how effective the work is with our teachers and their professional development and we are extremely excited to see this go to scale. We hope that this becomes a model for other large school systems in the United States to follow.” -Paul l. KinG, Executive Director, New York City Office of Arts and Special Projects

“Little Kids Rock has successfully re-framed the national dialog around music education by asking the question: ‘Are there other ways of teaching public school music that are more in line with society today?’ More importantly, they have partnered with high-needs districts across the nation to build Modern Band programs for hundreds of thousands of children.” - robert Cutietta, Dean of the USC Thornton School of Music

“At a time when already anemic school arts budgets are dwindling, this unconventional program is thriving…" "There are several for-profit programs that give lessons in rock music… But Little Kids Rock's national scope and nonprofit status make it unique.” - time maGazine
