Jim Plunkett Football Honors

In 1970 Jim Plunkett became Stanford’s first and onlyplayer to win the Heisman Trophy Award as the

best player in college football. Plunkett led theIndians to the Pacific-8 Conference Championshipwith a 9-3 record, including a thrilling 27-17 upsetvictory over previously undefeated Ohio State in theRose Bowl. He was the runaway winner for the trophy, garnering 510 of 1,059 first-place ballots cast. He com-piled 2,299 points to 1,401 for runner-up JoeTheismann of Notre Dame. In addition to theHeisman, Plunkett won the Maxwell Award, was aconsensus First-Team All-America, and was namedPlayer of the Year by United Press International,Sporting News, Sport Magazine, the Walter CampAssociation, and the American College FootballCoaches Association. He completed191 of 358 passes for2,715 yards, and he ranfor another 183 yards, giv-ing him 2,898 yards of totaloffense that season (a schooland Pac-8 record). Highlightsof the season included his 275passing yards in a 24-14 drubbingof USC, 22-of-36 passing for 268yards and four touchdowns in a29-22 win against Washington, and aphenomenal 20-of-30 for 265 yards in the 1971 RoseBowl, Plunkett’s final game at Stanford.

After finishing eighth in theHeisman balloting as a juniorin 1969, Plunkett turneddown an opportunity to turnpro and returned to Stanfordfor his senior season. “Coach(John) Ralston, all of ourcoaches, and my teammateshave been building some-thing at Stanford for the pastcouple of years,” Plunkettexplained. “If I were to leavenow, I would always have

the feeling that I let them down before our goals were reached.Besides, we are always telling kids today not to drop out, to fin-ish school, to set targets and to work towards them. Whatwould they think if I were to drop out now for professionalfootball?”

Plunkett returned to Stanford for the 1970 season andwound up having a storybook year he would never forget. Heled the Indians to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 19 yearsand their first Rose Bowl victory in 30 seasons. His perfor-mance in the Rose Bowl earned him Most Valuable Player hon-ors. He finished his career with 7,887 yards in total offense, which not only set a Stanford record but also established a newNCAA record.

He went on to become the number-one draft pick in theNFL by the New England Patriots. He played 16 seasons in theNFL with the Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland/LosAngeles Raiders. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1971and won two Super Bowl championships with the Raiders. Hewas the MVP of Super Bowl XV following the 1981 seasonwhen he led the Oakland Raiders over the Philadelphia Eagles.Three years later, Plunkett led the Los Angeles Raiders to a vic-tory in Super Bowl XVIII over the Washington Redskins.

In November, 1991, Plunkett’s jersey number 16 became thesecond number retired in Stanford history (the other is ErnieNever’s number one). He is a member of the College FootballHall of Fame and the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.
