Governor’s Message

Greetings my BPW Sisters. I just want to share

with you some work I have been doing on behalf of

the North Central District (NCD).

New arbitration procedures have been adopt-

ed by the National body at the 79th Conven-

tion. The goal is to give members a formal

procedure to resolve Club disputes with the

assistance of the jurisprudence board at the

district and national levels.

I continue to work with the Pontiac, Battle

Creek, and Cleveland clubs working on their

501(c)3 nonprofit determination. I also pro-

vided phone assistance to clubs in other

districts when contacted about the IRS re-

quirements.

Host the 79th Convention in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. Attendance was low and we

would like to make plans to make it cost

effective for members to attend the 80th

Anniversary in New York next year.

Began procedures on behalf of our organiza-

tion requesting the IRS to allow individual

clubs the ability to be added back under our

National’s group exemption. This will still

mean that we must each report our tax ex-

empt activities to the IRS on Form 990-N

based on our gross receipts for that year.

The majority of our clubs are only required to

report a form 990-EZ postcard. The postcard

report only confirms with the IRS that the

Club is still operating as a nonprofit following

the IRS guidelines.

I want to thank members for supporting the

district fundraisers. We were able to host the

national convention and still be financial at

the end of the year. A special thank you

goes to our Executive Committee for their

diligence in being good stewards of our

funds.

Program Ideas, Implementation and Compliance—Dr. Frances Collins

This year we plan to provide guidance in documentation for nonprofit activities. We want to ensure all clubs meet

their state and federal requirements for operating a nonprofit corporation.

Sisters Investing in Sisters-Group Chat

a) Career Tips for those making life changes or seeking growth

b) Mentoring opportunities

Military –Sexual Trauma (MST)—Group Chat

During the district conference it was approved that we urge lawmakers to address establishing open civil courts for women

suffering from military sexual assault (MST) by a fellow soldier or personal associate. We will learn more about this subject

and what work is currently being done to address MST. This will allow us to address this issue as an organization.

Our membership drive that was

held between October and De-

cember of 2013 came off as a

huge success, 491 new mem-

bers were recruited. Congratula-

tions to all the clubs that partici-

pated and recruited new club

sisters .

Please visit our new website at

www.ncd-nanbpwc.org and leave

comments let us know what

services you would like to see

available on the site. Our district

technology chair is Sharol Moor-

man.

VOCAL ARTS

I have reviewed several club

planning programs for the new

year. Just a reminder each club

that does NOT host a vocal arts

competition must be sure to pay

$75 to the district in accordance

with our Bylaws.

A new Membership drive is planned for October 2014—

December, 2014. The joining fee will be reduced to $50. This

will not affect membership dues for district or local clubs.

President Marie Castillo asked our membership to support the

National headquarters’ housing fund. Each member is encour-

age to contribute $25. Submission forms are available on the

national website.

GIRL RISING MOVEMENT

ard E. Robbins. Girl Rising uses storytelling to inspire action

that gets girls into classrooms worldwide. Girl Rising journeys

around the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and

the power of education to change the world. Viewers get to

know nine unforgettable girls living in the developing world:

ordinary girls who confront tremendous challenges and over-

come nearly impossible odds to pursue their dreams. 2nd VP

Sherelle Carper Youth project.

NANNIE JENKINS CENTER TRANSFER

National will transfer ownership of the Nannie Jenkins Center to

the Youth Empowerment Group, Inc. of Cuthbert Georgia.

They will use the facility to address the needs of at-risk youth.

* The Pittsburgh Educational Tour included a visit to The African Heritage Classroom. It is one of 29 Nationality Classrooms at the

University of Pittsburgh and the N.A.N.B.P.W.C. Pittsburgh Club donated $10,000 to have the room built. This was done under the

leadership of club President Mary Jane Mitchell Page. The African Heritage Classroom Committee presented National President

Castillo, Club President Rhonda Carson Leach, and myself each a framed picture of the Cathedral of Learning.
