Communism 

• Once In power Stalin imposed government control over the Soviet Union's economy.

• Stalin said in the past that Russia suffered from its economic backwardness.• In 1928 he proposed several "five-year plans" aimed at improving

transportation, improving farm output and building heavy industry.• He brought all economic activity under government control and the

government owned all businesses and distributed all resources

                              

Five Year Plan

• The command economy was developed by the Soviet Union.

• The government officials basically made all the decisions economically.

• There were many privately owned businesses that were always competing to win the consumer's choice.

• Consumer's choice was basically a competition that  regulated the price and quality of the goods. 

Command Economy 

1947-1991

• Stalin wanted all peasants to farm on collectives so that the state controlled all prices and access to supplies.

• All farm animals and implements were owned by the group of peasants farming the land.

Collectivization in Agriculture

• Collectives were large farms owned and worked on by a group of peasants.

• Stalin wanted peasants to all work on collectives or state owned farms

• On collectives the government provide seed, fertilizer and tractors.

Collective

• Russian word for fist •  Derogatory word used by the soviets to identify capitalist

peasants • Thought by people to be a  threat to the Soviet State and the

process of converting the peasant system into collective farm workers

 • Dekulakization initiated by Stalin after he took power,

included seizing personal property, splitting up families, and taking their land.

• Was a government agency that made one of many soviet labor camp systems

 •  Housed a range of prisoners from petty criminals to

political prisoners •  Recognized as a major instrument of political

repression in Soviet Union

crimes.• Many party members didn't even go on trial they went right

to the Gulag.• Police records say that at least 4 million people were purged

during Stalin's reign of terror. (Some people say that the numbers are higher)

• Cominterm was another name for the Communist International which was formed by Lenin in 1919.

•  The goal of the Comintern was to encourage a world-wide revolution.

• It also helped revolutionary groups and it urged colonial powers to go against imperial powers.

• He used propaganda to make himself look better• In schools, movie theaters, and villages everyone was only

told the negatives... leading the Communist Party to hear the "truth."

• Stalin required artists and writers to create their works in a style called Socialist Realism 

• The goal of it was to show soviet life in a positive way and promote a communist future.

•  Social Realism novels usually show a positive hero like a scientist or an engineer trying to acomplish a goal

• Stalin promoted russification which was the process of making a nationality's culture more Russian.

• In the 1920's, Stalin tried to use russification to influence non Russian SSRs.

• Stalin required the Russian language to be used in schools and businesses.

completely against the Russian Orthadox Church.

• Anyone who did not support Atheism were either sent to the Gulag, killed, or some how punished.

• Banned anything along with Judaism.

Benefits:• free communist-built schools

o supported technical schools and university schooling• set up extra curriculiar activities

o sports, culture activities, and politics. • a lot of bread• child care, medical care, inexpensive housing.

 Drawbacks:• forced Athiesm• housing was scarce• not much meat, fruit, and other foods.

Women in the Soviet Union

• work outside of the house was becoming more popularo jobs included: working

with medicine, engineering,sciences, even construction

• contributed to economic growth

  *Women saleries were needed because men had low saleries*
