PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Since my last report a number of activities have taken place. I would like to thank the organ-isers and people involved for their input and efforts to make those activities a success.

The Anzac Day March was well attended with approximately 120 of our members marching. All who marched gave an excellent display even though some of those participating were a little disappointed with the performance. It was disappointing that we didn't have a band near us to keep us in step, but as I reminded people our members only march once a year with no rehearsals for the event. The report from the Anzac Day March committee was positive. The photographs that are later in the news show our members proudly representing our Organisation. Well done for the efforts.

The Anzac Day luncheon was held at the 722 Club on the Port Road at Woodville. This event was very well attended by 48 people, and all enjoyed the fellowship and the meal. Thankyou to Keith and Margaret Prideaux for arranging the event.

Our Friday lunches and get togethers are being well attended, but owing to ill health and inclement weather the numbers have been down in recent weeks. If you are in the vicinity on a Friday, please feel very welcome to come and enjoy the company. The cost of the meal is only $5.00. We are at the Headquarters from about 0900 hrs through to about 1400 hrs.

During March I attended the National Conference in Melbourne. The launch of the National Service Scholarship Foundation was launched after the conference and attended by a number of dignitaries including a number of eminent Doctors. I have mentioned the Scholarship Foundation and the web site in previous reports. This will leave a legacy of National Service for the future. The conference itself was conducted over one day discussing many subjects but particularly the future of the organisation which at this time is to continue as we are for the foreseeable future. But to be aware that over the years there will be a contraction of the organisation owing to our demographics and aging population.

In company with other members of the Executive, I recently attended the funeral of David Barr. David was the Editor of the Nasho News for a number of years and a Life Member. Sadly there have been a number of members who have passed on. To the Family and friends of those members please accept my condolences.

The information I have regarding the National Service rose (National Pride) is that it will be available during June and July this year. There was a small article in the Sunday Mail column by Sophie Thomson regarding the rose. If you have any questions please contact is at State Headquarters.

RIVERLAND SUB BRANCH REPORT.

RIVERLAND SUB BRANCH NEWSGreetings to all! On April 8th, 20 of our members met in Waikerie to take a lunch cruise on the MV Barrangul. A short meeting was held, VP Alan reminded members of the Anzac Accolades afternoon in Renmark on Sunday 22nd. Berri Anzac service to be held on Wed 11th to enable school students to attend, as Anzac Day will be during the school holidays. A dawn service will be held in Barmera, Waikerie and Morgan later in the morning and a march in Renmark. The AGM followed, Ron Hill conducted the elections, results as follows: President – Neville Rozenweig, Vice President – Alan Smith, Sec/Treasurer – Peter Tucker. Committee consists of Erald Hunter, Ron Hill, Vene Trezise, Ron Law and Carl Vogelsang. Once again I will be the scribe! Meeting closed, and we then enjoyed a lovely cruise on our Murray River with an interesting commentary by Capt Steve Brindall. His boss “wife Chris” looked after everyone and we enjoyed a 2 course lunch. Everyone said it was a great way to spend a few hours. ANZAC DAY April 25th

A large crowd attended the Anzac Service held in the Waikerie Memorial Gardens. The short march was led by a bagpipe player, and Nasho members Ron Hill and John Scrivener took part in the march. Nasho members Vene Trezise and Lorraine Scrivener also attended the service. I attended the service in Morgan, with a wonderful surprise to find my granddaughter, Officer Cadet Ashleigh Johnston, in her RAAF uniform, proudly leading our march. Ashleigh was invited to participate by our local RSL. A small group took part, two ladies carried the Morgan RSL banner followed by ex-servicemen, relatives of servicemen, CFS and Ambulance members. A proud grandmother watched as a very professional Ashleigh led the march. The short service was led by RSL Chairperson Ernie Pobke, with many wreaths laid by members of various organisations. Following the service, the RSL members provided light refreshments and time for people to enjoy a chat. Our town is small, but these days are always specially remembered. Roma Hausler Scribe

,UPPER SOUTH EAST SUB BRANCH

Greetings again to all our members!!! The first event held for the 2nd Quarter was on Sunday, March 18th at ‘Bob and Helen Bauld’s property’ in Kingston. Twenty-four members attended the day for a BBQ lunch get-together consisting of grilled fish, hamburgers & sausages. Members brought along a variety of salads to eat with the selection of BBQ meats & fish. For sweets there was a choice of homemade apple pie or fruit salad with cream or ice-cream. One of our members Bev made some scones with many choosing to have them with jam & whipped cream. Following lunch we held a raffle with the first two names drawn winning a small crayfish. The lucky winners of the crayfish were Janet Smith & Ross Burzacott. All that came along enjoyed a relaxing day socialising amongst one another & satisfied their appetite with a range of lovely food, which has become customary every year.

“Anzac Day Services” were held on Wednesday, 25th of April at various locations in our sub-branch area. It was a very nice morning in Naracoorte for the dawn service which commenced at 5.30am with around 500 people attending. The ‘Anzac Day Street March’ followed at 6.00am with members of the public then lining the streets in the main precinct to support the Anzacs as they marched by. The light-horsemen participated in the march as is the tradition. Breakfast & refreshments were supplied to all by ‘Billy Macs’ for a gold coin donation.

Following Anzac proceedings in Naracoorte six of our members along with the light-horsemen ventured across to Apsley and participated in their ‘Anzac Day March & Service’. Around 200 people were present. Light refreshments were provided for all at the RSL Hall. On returning back to Naracoorte a few members that evening went out for tea at the ‘Kincraig Hotel’ to end a big day of commemorations.

The next venue for our sub-branch will be on Sunday, 27th May at the ‘Kincraig Hotel’ in Naracoorte, where members will catch up for lunch & chat. There has been no official plans made to get-together as a group over the upcoming winter months of June, July & August,

NO REPORTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FROM BROKEN HILL OR YORKE PENINSULA.

Little Red riding Hood found in a critical condition. Paramedics have stabilised her, but she’s not out of the woods yet.

I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory, all I did was to take a day off.

Chaplains Corner May 2018 GETTING EXPERIENCE The artist Turner became noted for his paintings of storms at sea, with storm whipped waves, and black clouds and nature in fury. He was asked how do you do it? Turner replied, “I wished to paint a storm at sea so I went to the coast of Holland and engaged a fisher-man to take me out in his boat in the next storm. The storm was brewing, and I went down to his boat and bade him bind me to the mast. Then he drove the boat out into the teeth of the storm. The storm was so furious that I longed to lie down in the bottom of the boat, and allow it to blow over me. But I could not; I was bound to the mast. Not only did I see that storm and feel it, but it blew itself into me till I became part of the storm. And then I came back and painted that picture.”.

NOW THERE’S A THOUGHT There are some experiences from which we learn immediately. One only has to touch the hot end of a soldering iron once to have learn a lesson for life! How can we learn from life experiences? How can we learn from the experiences which friendship will often set before us? The answer lies in our willingness to reflect, to look back and ponder about the ex-perience and ask ourselves “How could I have done better?” It takes some discipline, but we can help ourselves, by reflecting on our actions. Perhaps there are steps we can work through – do, look, think, grow. DO -suppose a friend shares a problem of an ethical issue in a workplace. We answer by saying forget it, let it go, it’s not your problem. Our friend is not relieved THINK- we take time afterwards to consider what we have said. We realise that we have undervalued the concern our friend has for this issue. They are in a dilemma, and we have dismissed the impact it is having on our friend. LOOK- We shape in our mind a different approach which values the person’s distress, and begins to feel their level of concern. We decide that we could change our style. We look, and see a more helpful ap-proach. GROW- We make a change in ourselves, and when speaking with our friend we listen more carefully. We are not dismissive. We listen for our friend’s possible solutions. We become supportive rather than dismissive. We have learnt, or begun to learn, from the experience, and now perhaps the friend will feel a little stronger in dealing with the issue.

AS WAS SAID IN TIMES PAST “Each generation has to find out for itself that the stove is hot.” Belgian Proverb – “Experience is the comb that nature gives us when we are bald.”

NSAA. PARA DISTRICTS MAY REPORT.

April has been a busy time for the sub branch being represented at the Citizenship Ceremony at the Salisbury Council chambers. Our next outing, was to the Planetarium at Mawson Lakes. Twenty members and friends met at Cafe Primo for lunch then moving to the venue. It was an interesting outing and all members had a good time. On Sunday the 22nd of April a Memorial service was held at the Orange Ave. Memorial for members that could not attend the Dawn service. I represented the NSAA and attended a short service at the RSL. clubroom.

On Wednesday the 25th. Joan and I represented the NSAA at the dawn service and laid a wreath at the ceremony at Orange Ave. We then went back to the RSL. and had a barbeque breakfast put on by the lions club on behalf of the Salisbury RSL. The Assoc donated two bottles of rum for the day. The turn up in numbers was esti-mated above 1500 people. We came home at 8.30 and watched the march from Ade-laide and saw members from the NSAA and from the RSL.

LOWER SOUTH EAST SUB BRANCH NEWS

. Report from the Lower South East Sub Branch Greetings from the Lower South East where the grass is now green again and the “Grey Nomads” are preparing ther caravans and holiday bookings to spend another warm winter “up north!” The Anzac Day commemoration once again attracted record attendances from the public at both the Dawn Service and the main street March and Service at the War Memorial. It was obvious that the numbers of those marching is reducing year by year which I guess is an inevitable outcome. Our National Servicemen’s group numbered about 20 with some ‘extras’ coming forward from the community and visitors to march with us. See photos.

Our monthly dinners at the RSL are still popular and have enjoyed a regular attendance. We have re-introduced the after dinner short address by a member with a topic of their own choice. This has proven to be popular and provides some interesting and often amusing additional attraction to the fellowship together with the Raffle which provides us with a few dollars to cover any costs. Our standing invitation to any visiting Nasho and their partners to join us on the last Monday of any month, for an evening meal at the RSL still applies. Regards and keep warm. Ted Jordan Publicity Officer / Chairman.

NORTHERN CENTRAL AREA Short Report

Greetings fellow National Servicemen, since the restart of the sub branch for 2018 there has been not that many changes to talk about, Christmas wind up meeting was reasonably attended for our Sub Branch, newly appointed Patron, Councillor Carol Martin paid us a visit which was much rewarding for the branch, Christmas Luncheon, was after the meeting and we went the Cross Keys Hotel, a nice working class venue and a good hardy meal. January’s meeting was mainly a meeting put aside to sort out what we are going to do as a sub branch for the next 12 months, quite a few ideas were spoken about, and put down on paper now, they just have to be followed up and carried out. February the word moved through the ranks that March was AGM time, and also how many were willing to put their hand up and nominate for a position on the committee, sadly I’m sure they just sit on their hands except the willing one or two members said they would try and help out as committee members, nominations forms were taken by those who were willing. Secretary Heather Simms had made contact with a person from the, Cheer – Up- Society, who has promised to address our meeting in June, this should be a very interesting meeting to learn all about the Cheer- Up- Hut, what it did and stood for, and just how far its history goes back. March meeting came around and that meant the AGM, I was glad to see a reasonable roll up of members, and glad to report that a committee was formed for the 2018/19 financial year, election of officers was handled once again by Returning Officer Graham Sargent, those who stepped up are as follows,. Presi-dent – Malcolm Kruss (last year!), Vice President – Trevor Cabot, Secretary – Mrs. Heather Simms, Asst. Secretary - Mal Simms, Treasurer – Keith Fitzgerald, Committee Members, John Hadaway and Wally Smith. Luncheon was once again taken at the Cross Keys Hotel. Thanks was paid to former Vice President Tom Camplin who served faithfully in that position for a number of years, but has had to stand down because of health issues, we wish you all the best Tom. Anzac Day once again saw the Northern Central Nasho’s come to the front in setting up the hall for the ‘Gun Fire Breakfast’ traditional at the Enfield RSL, cooking and serving, the cleaning afterwards and generally anything else that generally had to be done the Nasho’s were at the front. And that my friends, is generally what has been happening at, Northern Central Area Sub Branch.

FLEURIEU SUB-BRANCH REPORT JUNE.

ANZAC DAY Services were well attended at all locations on the South Coast. Fleurieu Sub-Branch Members laid wreaths at Victor Harbor and Port Elliot and were represented at both Yankalilla and Goolwa Memorial Services.. Our members joined with the Port Elliot RSL for the service followed by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast.

Life Member Kevin Robinson joined the Adelaide contingent at the ANZAC DAY March.

The Sub-Branch Committee met on May18th. followed by a Members luncheon at which we were pleased to welcome former State President Brian Roberts and his wife Helen, who have recently moved back to SA after spending time in Queensland. Brian was very involved in the formation of the Fleurieu Sub-Branch in 2002 and some old memories were recalled during the luncheon.

Our History Preservation Project is gathering steam and a filming day is scheduled for June 22nd when Inaugural President, Peter Woods will present the “Founding Years” and Merv. Knuckey will present the “Monument History”. To theses 2 components will be added a photographic review of many facets of the Sub-Branch’s history.

Membership, as with Headquarters and all Sub-Branches, is diminishing and this year we believe we will be back to 50 compared with 68 last year. This number has only been achieved by the dedicated work of our Membership Director Bill Renshaw who continues to remind Members it is time to pay your subs.

Our greetings go out to all other Sub-Branches throughout the State.

Neil Wilkinson. President. 22-05-2018.

, EYRE PENINSULA SUB-BRANCH JUN, 2018 COMMUNIQUÉ

[by Padre Norman Johnston]Howdy from your colleagues on Eyre Peninsula who have learned that

it is not what we have I our lives, but who we have in our lives that counts. As many as possible turned out for ANZAC Services in our area.

Port Lincoln Tumby Bay Even our Padre had the opportunity to attend a Dawn Service at Hampstead

Gardens

The past months have been quiet but we enjoy the comradery of our monthly meetings and continue our regular maintenance work at the Port Lincoln RSL Garden of Remembrance with some upgrade programs to complete in partnership with local schools.

As we grow older and wiser, we begin to realise what we need and what we need to leave behind. Sometimes walking away is a step forward. – Zahid Abas (RaiseYourMind.com)
