NASAestablishedtheSpaceFlightAwareness(SFA)MotivationandRecognitionProgramasaformalprogramaftertheMercuryandGeminiperiod,toinfusethespaceprogramwitharenewedandstrengthenedconsciousnessof qualityandflightsafety.
AsNASA’s human space flight program continued and devel-oped,theNASACentersincreasedtheassistancetheyprovidedto theemployeemotivationprogramsof theircontractorsandother government agencies. The futureof spaceflightbrings
new opportunities and challenges for the SFA Program. Theprogrammustkeeppacewithanever-changingenvironmentof people,systems,andprocessesthatdesign,build,flyandsupporthumanspaceflight.
TheNationalSFAPanelworksdiligentlytoensureaneffectiveprogram,oneof valuetothehumanspaceflightworkforce.Thefocusof theprogramcontinuestobeexcellenceinquality,safetyandmissionsuccess.

The NASA VisionTo reach for new heights and reveal the unknown, so that what we do and learn
will benefit all humankind.
On April 12, 1961, YuriGagarin launched aboardVostok1fromtheBaikonurCosmodrome in what wasthen the Soviet Union.While launching the firsthuman into space was adaunting technical achieve-
ment, italsosentastarkpoliticalmessageattheheightof theColdWarabouttheprowessof Sovietengineers.WiththeSpaceRaceinfullswing,theUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionembarkeduponacampaignof competitiontoreachtheultimatehighground.
Twentyyearslater,theSpaceShuttleColumbiaroaredtolife,soaring into the sky onApril 12, 1981. Theworld’s firstreusablespacevehiclelookednothinglikeVostok,Gemini,Soyuz,orApollo. Standingamajestic184feethighatthe
launchpad,theShuttlewouldflyintospaceasarocket,func-tionasanorbitinglaboratoryandconstructionvehicleoncethere,andreturntoEarthasaglider, touchingdownona
runwaylikenootherspacecraftinhistory.ThedifferencesintheShuttle,however,aremorethanskindeep.Overthecourse of their careers, the five Shuttles, Columbia, Chal-lenger,Discovery,Atlantis,andEndeavour,wouldcarry362peopleintoorbitfrom15countries,travelingmorethan530millionmiles in the process. During the assembly of theInternationalSpaceStation,theseShuttleswouldcarryinto
spacemulti-tonmodules constructed in theUnited States,Russia, Europe, and Japan, and robotics from Canada.AlthoughtheShuttleisapotentsymbolof Americanpride,it is also a well-recognized ambassador to the world of Americanwillingnesstoengageinmutuallybeneficialcoop-eration--notcompetition--intheexplorationof theuni-versearoundEarth.TheShuttleevenassistedinmaintainingtheRussianMIRspacestation.
Becauseof theShuttle,theNASAhumanspaceflightpro-gram (HSF) has had many accomplishments through theyears including in2010. NASAand its internationalpart-ners celebrated 10 years of permanent human habitationon the International Space Station onNovember 2, 2010.More than600different researchand technologydevelop-mentexperimentshavebeenconductedaboardtheStation,manyof which areproducing advances inmedicine, envi-ronmentalsystems,andourunderstandingof theuniverse.Nearly 200 people from a dozen nations have lived andworkedaboardtheStation,researchhasbeenconductedand151spacewalkshavebeenconductedinsupportof Stationassembly andmaintenance, totalingmore than 950 hours.Additionally, in 2010, three Space Shuttlemissions helpedbuildandoutfittheStation.TheSTS-130missioninFeb-ruarydeliveredacupolawithsevenwindowsandarobotic

controlStation.Thecupolaprovidesapanoramicviewof Earth, celestial objects, and visiting spacecraft. The STS-131mission inAprildeliveredscienceracksandnewcrewsleepingquarters,installedanewammoniastoragetankfortheStation’s cooling system, and replaced a gyroscope fortheStation’snavigationsystem.InMay,theSTS-132crewdeliveredtheRussian-builtMiniResearchModule-1knownasRassvettotheStation.
There are many other noteworthy HSF accomplishmentsoverthepastyearthatwecanalsobeproudof.TheSaba-tier systemwasactivatedandcancreateup to530gallonsof waterperyearfrombyproductsof theStation’sOxygenGenerationSystemandCarbonDioxideRemovalAssembly,critical tosustainingtheStationoncetheShuttle isretired.WeextendedtheWorldWideWebintospacebyprovidingthe Space Station astronauts that capability. The Stationpartners approved an international docking system stan-dardthatwillprovideguidelinesforacommoninterfacetolinkfuturespacecraftrangingfromcrewedtoautonomousvehicles and from low-Earth orbit to deep space explora-tionmissions.Inadditiontothelanguagesspokeninthe15countries thathavehadrepresentativesaboard theStation,AmericanSignLanguage,orASL,isnowincluded.NASA
astronautTracyCaldwellDysonsentamessageinASLfromthe Station to the deaf community. NASA selected nineexperimentsdesignedbystudentsatsevenschoolsforastro-
nautstoperformontheStationforthenewKidsinMicro-g!Program.Thestudentexperimentdesignchallengegearedtowardgradesfivethrougheightgivesstudentsahands-onopportunitytodesignexperimentsorsimpledemonstrationsfortestingbothintheclassroomandintheStation’smicro-gravityenvironment. SpaceXlaunched itsFalcon9rocketandDragoncapsuleonademonstrationflightthatkeepsitoncourseforprovidingimportantcargoflightstotheSpaceStationinthefuture.AndNASAcontinueditsoutreachtothepublicbyhosting anumberof “Tweet-Ups,” enablingTwitteruserstomeetastronauts,talklivetotheStationcrew,and watch a Shuttle launch from Kennedy Space Center,Florida. Thankyouto theNASASpaceFlightAwareness(SFA)Programforyouroutstandingworkinsupportof allof ourHSFactivitiesandevents.
Over the coming months, it is important for us to stayfocused on safely completing the Space Shuttle manifest.AsNASAprepares to retire theSpaceShuttle andpursuenewexplorationchallenges,welookforwardtoNASAandcontractororganizationscontinuingtopartnerwith,partici-patein,andsupporttheHSFSFAPrograminrecognizingourworkforcefortheirexemplaryHSFcontributions.EventhoughtheShuttleProgramwillbecompleted,welooktotheSFAProgramtocontinuehelpingusinmotivatingandprovidingemployeerecognitiontoourdedicatedcivilserviceandcontractorworkforceforourvariousprogramsandmis-sionsuccesses.Let’scontinuetoworktogetherandfocusonthefutureanditsexcitingopportunitiesahead.

Space Flight Awareness AwardsFlightSafetyAwardThis award recognizes significant, outstanding, individual orteamcontributionsrelatedtothepreventionof anythingthatcouldleadtoacatastrophicmishaptothevehicle,crew,ormis-sion. The approval process for this award includes the SFANationalPanel,theFlightSafetyPanel,andtheNASAAssoci-ateAdministratorforSafetyandMissionAssurance.
HonoreeAwardThisawardisoneof thehighestpresentedtoNASAandindus-tryemployeesandisforfirst-levelmanagementandbelow.Thisawardispresentedtoemployeesfortheirdedicationtoqualitywork and flight safety. To qualify, the individualsmust havecontributedbeyondtheirnormalworkrequirementstoachievesignificantimpactonattainingaparticularhumanspaceflightprogramgoal;contributedtoamajorcostsavings;beeninstru-mental in developingmodification to hardware, software, ormaterials that increase reliability, efficiency, or performance;assistedinoperationalimprovements;orbeenakeyplayerindevelopingabeneficialprocessimprovement.

SilverSnoopyThis is the astronauts’ personal award. To qualify for thisaward, eligible candidates will have made contributionstowardenhancingtheprobabilityof missionsuccess,ormadeimprovements indesign,administrative/technical/productiontechniques,business systems,flight and/or systems safetyoridentification and correction or preventive action for errors.Thisaward isgenerallynot intendedformanagement.
