A big congratulations to Trudy Lane and her husband Danny who
welcomed their baby boy Ziggy John in January. We can’t wait to
meet him when he visits the school!
Welcome
I would like to welcome back Michelle Lampard, who is teaching
year 3/4s and 6/7s for half a day each for intervention and extension
literacy and numeracy. It’s wonderful to have Mrs Lampard on site
again!
Student free day
A reminder that Friday the 8th of March is our first Student Free Day.
Teachers will be attending a Simon Breakspear Training and Devel-
opment session.
Meet the teachers
Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who came along to our Meet the Teachers night
on Tuesday. We certainly had our biggest turn out ever! This is a very important first
step in getting to know your child’s teacher, expectations and intentions for a year of
learning ahead, and also an opportunity to mingle with staff and other families in an in-
formal way. If you were unable to attend, handouts that were discussed on the night have
been sent home with your child.

Reading Comprehension Strategies
Over the last couple of weeks, we have introduced the reading comprehension
strategies of Activating Prior Knowledge and Predicting. These are both im-
portant strategies that can be used before, during and after reading to increase
meaning and enjoyment in the reading process.
Ways you can support your child to use these strategies when reading at home is
to spend some time before reading looking at the front and back cover, and have
your child make predictions on what the story might be about. If it is a non-
fiction text, you could ask them what they already know about the topic and what
they hope to learn. During and after reading you can stop to check their predic-
tions or have a conversation about what they now know about the topic.

I can see 2019 fortnights are going to fly by as quickly as ever! Here we are in
newsletter week again.
Intention Assemblies
Our fabulous new KIC exec have certainly hit the ground running and haven’t skipped
a beat getting organised for the year. They have organised 2 brilliant Intention Assem-
blies and have put their own new twist on them. What some people do not realise is that
the Intention Assemblies have a lot of work done behind the scenes. The KIC exec de-
cide what the new intention should be and work out some dot points they feel the school
needs to focus on. They then write a script/run sheet, make a PowerPoint presentation
and organise a group of children to role play what the intention should look like. They
are doing an amazing job.
This fortnight’s intention is “Pursue your per-
sonal best no matter who you work with”.
When you are thrown into the workforce you
do not get to choose who you work with.
Teaching children from a very young age to
get along and work successfully with other
students is a very important life skill.
Our Youth Mental Health
Ambassadors are also con-
tributing a section to the
intention assembly. On
Monday they spoke about
what good mental health
looks like and gave some good examples of what you can do to sustain good mental
health. Great work girls!
Our House Captains also
got to contribute to the as-
sembly. They organised
and ran a whole school
game of Piccadilly Circus.
The R-2 students formed
one circle and the 3-7 stu-
dents formed another. The aim of the game is for players to pass coloured balls to eve-
ryone in the circle. You cannot touch the same colour ball twice. Students need to work
together as a team and use effective communication to play successfully. The JP stu-
dents completed the task before the 3-7 circle so are our reigning champs! The house
captains did a wonderful job coaching and assisting. This is one of the Play is the Way
games that children have been practising in classes.
Reading
Reading is such an important skill and one of
the areas we are focussing on again this year. I
have started reading to children in the morning
whenever I can. So if you see me with my
picnic rug and basket of books on one the
ovals, please come and join me for a story or
two. It is a lovely way to start the day!
Swimming
We have now completed out Department for
Education swimming lessons for all Reception
to Year 5 students. The focus for these lessons
is safety and survival. The lessons they learned
will hold them in much better stead when
around water for the rest of their lives. Thanks
to Kelly and her team of instructors for hold-
ing the lessons (especially in such chilly
weather!) They even brought the safety equip-
ment up to the hall for one lesson as it was just
too cold and windy to go to the lake! The chil-
dren really benefitted from this lesson and we
would like to thank them for their flexibility
Have a great fortnight.

We are in need of size 6-10 under-wear and socks for boys and girls. Also size 4-8 shorts. If you have any of these you don’t require please drop them into the front office. It would be much appreciated. Thank-you
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

Last years’ students need to re register and pay their money for this year if they would like to continue. Any questions, please contact me. Tracy Hahn Children's University Coordinator.
Cathie Biggins
Hi everyone,
What a wonderful School this is! It was lovely to see
all of the families who attended our Meet the
Teachers evening this week, and there were plenty
of smiling faces (especially at barbecue time!). As
usual the term is zipping along with lots of great
learning opportunities in store for our lucky stu-
dents. I am particularly impressed with the willing-
ness of students of all ages to put themselves for-
ward as leaders and volunteers. This is a great atti-
tude to carry forth with and it makes our School
stronger and better.
This is the time of the year when we are looking for
community members who are interested in volun-
teering some time to help at School. There are
many ways that you can contribute, ranging from
serving on School Council, helping in the Canteen,
hearing students read, attending our working bees,
and joining our LAP programme.
As you know, every child is different and therefore
each student’s needs – academic, social and
emotional – are unique to them.
LAP (Learning Assistance Programme) is a great
way to support individual students in areas which
may be affecting their learning.
We have many students who would greatly benefit
from a mentoring adult who visits each week to
“touch base” and work with them. Activities are
tailored to specific needs and could range from
learning the 7 x tables to shooting hoops in the
gym or learning how to thread a fishing line… just
to name a few!
If you, or someone you know, would be interested
in finding out more about LAP please give me a
call at the School. The benefits are two-way, and
we have fun together!
Cathie Biggins.
