Principal’s Message

D ear Parents and Students,

The excitement of the New Year continues on here at Naples High School as we focus on a most important round of decision-making. Both underclassmen and seniors are making progress academically while also making critical decisions about their individual future whether it be after graduation or here on campus. In all instances, we are doing our best to engage, support,

and guide our students so that their next step is a successful one.

Before looking ahead into the future, it is important that we remind students how important today is for them. As the Principal, I am incredibly proud of the achievements our students have earned over the first semester of the year. And, I know that even greater opportunities await them in the coming months. It is important that they maintain the practices which have yielded success and refine those that need attention. We ask our parents and guardians to help us with this process by encouraging students and reminding them that January can be a fresh start for every student. The benefit of a new semester is that we all get the opportunity to refocus and start anew.

2angst, frustration, and uncertainty. It is important that we all work together to help our seniors as this process unfolds. It is a critical time for them, and while they may not express it, they do need our support and reassurance. Our Guidance Department is available should students or parents have any questions regarding the any part of this individualized process.

The mission of Naples High School is to provide a safe and healthy learning environment in which all students have the opportunity to achieve to their highest potential and become productive citizens. This includes students assuming responsibility for their both their actions and education. As caring, supportive adults our role is help guide them to make the choices which will help them get there. Thank you for your continued support and see around campus. Go Eagles!

Sincerely,Darren Burkett, Principal

Principal’s Message ...continued from cover page

From the Desk of the Assistant Principal for Curriculum Greetings! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break! Semester two is upon us and things will really start to go by quickly. Seniors should be sure to double and triple check that everything is on track for graduation. Juniors, need to start thinking about their senior year and an appropriate schedule. Sophomores, want start to consider life after high school, whether it is college or the workforce. The freshmen can become leaders for the new in-coming ninth grade class and begin their pathway for success.

Classroom rigor and in-depth lesson planning has become an important focus this year. Our teachers are spending countless hours in making sure their plans and assignments are correlated to the Florida State Standards. This is helping to continue to drive our graduation rate above the ninety percent range. Parents, we need your help to make sure your students are keeping up with their coursework. If you notice your child starting to fall behind, be proactive and notify the teacher(s), and/or School Guidance Counselor. Naples has instituted an automated dialer to inform you that your child’s grade is currently a “D” or an “F”. If you receive one of these calls, please reach out to the teacher and/or counselor.

Since testing has slowed down a bit, the APC and Guidance offices begin to prepare for student scheduling for the 2019-2020 school year. Parents/Guardians, please talk with your kids about preparing for the future. Talk about their interests and have meaningful discussions about their options. Naples offers many avenues for student success. We have our academies, Advanced Placement and Cambridge/AICE courses, pathways to On-the-Job-Training, and many more opportunities for students. For more information about scheduling for the 2019-2020 school year, Naples will be hosting a “Parent Workshop” for student scheduling on February 4, 2019. Please make it a point to attend so you can help your child pick and choose the right courses and levels in order to bring out their true potential. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Mr. Joseph A. Manento, Asst. Principal of Curriculum & Instruction

3The Latest from the Office of Student Relations

As we enter the second semester, we want to encourage students, and parents, to continue to go strong. Our students had a great first semester and we are excited to see what the future has in store for them as we enter third quarter.

The holidays have ended and this generally results in students receiving some new items. We encourage students to keep their expensive items at home to avoid loss or theft. A number of students have dropped one of their EarPods and without their original container, it is impossible to track the individual pod. Students are reminded to be extremely careful with these items and any others they have received so they can continue to enjoy their gifts without worry.

A great New Year’s resolution that we are promoting is attendance. Naples High was the proud recipient of Collier County Public Schools’ Best Attendance Award for the spring of 2018 and we are hoping to continue this honor. We would like to remind parents and students that missing just two school days a month impedes academic success. Testing season is fast approaching and can bring challenges for our students in terms of performance and stamina as they work to balance all of their responsibilities and also complete all of the tests to the best of their ability. Helping your child learn to prioritize and address the most important tasks first can go a long way in making this period more successful.

Our students have done very well adjusting to the new ID badge rule. They are also aware that failure to follow the badge rules carries consequences. If a student does not have their standard school-issued ID badge, they are to go to the attendance office to get a temporary sticker for the day. Once a student has accumulated four temporary badges, they will receive one lunch detention. The consequences will grow if the student continues to receive temporary badge stickers. We know that this has been a change and appreciate the support from all our parents regarding this policy.

Bright Futures Application: Counselors met with Seniors via their Government or Economics classes back in October to complete the Bright Futures application. If your son/daughter missed the classroom presentation they can still complete the application by going to www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org. It is important to know that students must complete this application in order to be considered for this scholarship. If you need more information please contact your child’s counselor.

Course Planning 2019-2020: We anticipate starting the course request process in February. Students in grades 9-11 will be provided a Course Selection sheet to bring home and make elective selections. Academic classes will be scheduled based on teacher recommendation, standardized test results (when available) and course grades. Later this spring, a printed version of all requested courses will be provided to students/parents for final review.

Social/Emotional Needs: First and foremost, your students’ emotional wellbeing is our priority. Often, school counselors are the go to persons for grades, academic needs and post-secondary preparation; please know we all have training to assist our young men and women as they navigate the vast social and personal issues he or she may be faced with during his/her high school years. We also have a full-time school psychologist and a school social worker assigned to Naples High School. We are all here to help you student be the best version of themselves.

Focus on Parent Portal: Trust But Verify

By Steve Edwards

You may remember the “trust but verify” policy of the Ronald Reagan administration during the 1980s. The United States and the Soviet Union had signed a nuclear arms reduction treaty, but how could the U.S. be sure that the Soviets were meeting their end of the bargain and vice versa? The trust but verify doctrine allowed each country to monitor the other through on-site inspections after the arms reduction agreement was in place. Trust but verify improved relations and established a level of trust between the two countries while increasing accountability through verification that nuclear arms were in fact being reduced according to the guidelines set forth in the treaty.

This small piece of U.S. history provides a perfect analogy for the dynamic that often exists between parents and students. When asking their son or daughter about school work, parents often get the reply, “I don’t have any homework” or “I’m doing fine in my classes.” But how is a parent to know if their student is not feeding them a lie or half-truth? Of course we want to trust that our child is telling us the truth, but we all know from experience that this is not always the case.

Enter the CCPS Parent Portal - the “trust but verify” tool for the 21st century parent. The Focus Gradebook application that can be accessed through Parent Portal offers a real-time look at your child’s current grade in each class and a window into the progress that your student is making on all of their assignments. Focus is a very valuable tool to support your student’s educational experience and to provide an added level of accountability that is often needed. Here are the steps to access Focus through Parent Portal: www.collierschools.com à red “Parents” tab à “CCPS Portal” button

You will then be prompted to log in or create an account. Once inside the portal, click on the “Focus” icon on the left side of the screen. Focus gives you access to your child’s gradebook as well as a link to email communications directly to each of your student’s teachers. Modern technology has provided us with both challenges and great opportunities - please utilize Parent Portal and Focus to help your student succeed!
