John McDermott was 38 years old when

he embarked on his first tour, and it

almost didn’t happen. He was “discov-

ered” on a film festival cruise, working

for the travel division of the Toronto

Sun. “I was doing a Beatles tune on kara-

oke,” he recalls, “And the machine broke

down, so I did it acapella.” After his per-

formance, a man gave him a business

card and told him to get in touch if he

ever decided to anything with his voice.

That man, John later learned, was an

executive with EMI and years later,

would convince John to find a way to

take some time off work and go on

tour, opening for the Chieftains.

There’s a lot of history between then and

now; countless live performances, includ-

ing an estimated 10 in Nanaimo, more

than 30 CD’s, DVD’s, television appear-

ances, five Juno nominations, numerous

awards and a charitable foundation called

McDermott House that he founded to sup-

port veterans and first responders.

In mid-February, pre-sales opened for

a double DVD called All Those Years, a

compilation of documentary, behind the

scenes and performance video footage. “It’s

stuff you’re not going to see anywhere else,”

John says, not wanting to promise they will

be ready for the March 17th show in Na-

naimo, but he didn’t rule it out either.

John had no intention of pursuing a pro-

fessional singing career. He was on track

to work in the newspaper or publishing

business, maybe chemical engineering

and water treatment, but then Conrad

Black heard him singing at company par-

ties. Black, along with other executives,

financed McDermott’s independent record-

ing of Danny Boy in 1992, which was picked

up and released in North America by EMI

Music Canada. It would seem that music

found John, as much as John found music.

He’s just finished recording a CD called

Raised on Songs and Stories that, unique-

ly, is one track, no breaks between songs.

“I’m getting the history of songs from older

generations in Ireland and the link between

songs will be spoken-word. It’s a work in

progress, and I’m hoping for a fall release.”

In addition to Raised on Songs and

Stories, John is writing a book, called

The Accidental Tenor. Each chapter is

a collision, of sorts, starting with a ship

John and his family were on colliding

with a Norwegian tanker in the Gulf of

St. Lawrence. They were on their way

to Montreal, from Quebec City.

“It was the night of the great blackout,

November 9th, 1965, the power failure in

Queenstown. It changed the course of our

lives ...  and that’s just one chapter!”

Nanaimo audiences can expect what

audiences around the world have come

to love about songs from the isles when

John McDermott performs at the Port

Theatre on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17.)

“It doesn’t matter what audience I’m in front

of,” John says. “There’s always some con-

nection, an event, a distant part of their

heritage, the songs of the isles are rooted in

our history. It’s soothing we don’t let go. It’s

something very special.”

John always meets the audience

before the performance and during

intermission and fans sometimes slip

him notes, requesting certain songs.

He often obliges.

Don’t’ miss John McDermott at the

Port Theatre, on Saturday, March 17th.

There are two performances, one at

3pm and one at 7:30pm.

of Puerto Vallarta. We saw flocks of pelicans in a feeding frenzy on the water; bats pouring out of a tower at exactly 7pm every night and the giant iguanas that frequented the gardens sur-rounding the hotel. The people are friendly, the food is sublime. I loved the fact that for 7 days I could unplug, read, eat and drink too much, soak up the sun and just step out of the exhilarating yet hectic life I lead as Editor of this magazine.

Needless to say, I fell in love … and we will definitely be returning.

FROM THE EDITOR | JUDY STEPHAN

I became a Canadian citizen in June 2015, but had never participated in the Canadian ritual that separated me from the rest of the country. A rite of passage, as it were. I had never been to Mexico in our winter months. That recently changed as I spent a week in Puerto Vallarta at the beginning of February. It was amazing, and now I get it. After months in the cold, rainy and sometimes snowy winters of Vancouver Island, I fully understand why people escape to the sunny climes of Mexico.

It was, for me having originally come from Durban, South Africa, like going home as it had a familiarity about it. The smell of the sea, the amazing sunsets, the warmth and humidity, the beach vendors, the warm swimming pools and ocean, the palm trees … the sand between my toes. We wandered through the cobbled streets of Buscerias and along the waterfront

Getting a business sold can be a difficult task especially if you do not have experience in the industry. That’s why the former owner of Fantasea Holdings, David Harstad, was gratified to use the professional services provided by Michael Naprawa of Sunbelt Business Brokers BC (West Coast) Inc. in the success-ful sale of his business.Harstad learned about Sunbelt Business Brokers while doing contract painting on a commercial site where Naprawa was assisting a new business owner move into that facility. Harstad invited Naprawa to meet and discuss the prospect of selling Fantasea Holdings, a business with a long and successful his-tory, founded by his father in 1974. It’s actually a business with two parts. Service Tech Restorations provides disaster remedi-ation and restoration services and Harstad Painting provides commercial and residential painting services.

From that point, Naprawa took care of the many details involved, such as reviewing the books, coming up with a fair evaluation, finding a buyer and following the process through to a clean closing.“It is now a year later and we are extremely happy with our decision to sell our business with Michael Naprawa at Sunbelt,” says Harstad. If you are contemplating the sale or purchase of a business, contact BC Business Brokers (Sunbelt). Nanaimo Port Authority has a new President and CEO, Ewan Moir, so I headed down to the beautifully appointed Cruise Ship Terminal to meet him. In his office overlooking Nanaimo Harbour and Gabri-ola Island, I found out more about this down-to-earth Scotsman. The son of an air force man, Ewan was born in Malmesbury, UK, but moved to Aberdeen, Scotland when he was still a baby. At 6 his family moved to Helensburgh where he remained until he left home at 18, headed for Southampton and the beginning of a long and colourful ca-reer. There he studied mechanical engineering as an engineering cadet with BP Shipping Ltd. Unlike normal student life his summers were spent in workshop training, at sea and after graduation, undertaking industrial training at Swan Hunter Shipyard in Newcastle. In September 1983 he became a Merchant Navy Engineering Officer with BP. During the three years he spent with BP he worked on oil tankers, at their ship layup facil-ity that they operated in Brunei and worked on an offshore supply vessel in the North Sea. In 1986 he left BP and joined Denholm Ship Manage-ment, a Glasgow-based company, working on cross Channel ferries. This move allowed him to keep his girlfriend whom he married in 1987.

Moir began his business career in 1988 at Ulstein UK, a company owned by a Norwegian group that specialised in ship design, construction and marine equipment supply. Ewan moved with the company to Holland, Singapore and Norway and rose through the ranks gaining valuable and extensive marine-related business experience in senior positions. Because of Ewan’s worldwide leadership and management experience, especially in business development, Ulstein finally brought him to Van-couver in 1995 to run Ulstein Maritime Ltd a problematic plant building azimuthing thrusters, where he took on the challenges, eventually secur-ing the company an award for export via the BC Export Awards Program. During his time at the helm he changed many aspects of the company introducing the company to the ISO environmental and quality manage-ment systems, and oversaw a significant expansion and redesign of the facilities. In early 2000 he completed his MBA and CPA-CMA through Queens University.

After the company was acquired by Rolls Royce PLC, Ewan was head-hunted by Finning International Power Systems in a Business Development role, and helped with the integration of new territories for which Finning had been given responsibility in South America with their existing organisa-tions in Chile, UK, and Western Canada. He was then approached by Fraser River Pile & Dredge becoming President and CEO of the company, then SNC Lavalin as a Senior Vice President Ports and Marine (which included

a 15-month period living in India) fol-lowed by Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd as President and finally Pacific BioEnergy as President and COO before joining the Nanaimo Port Authority in October last year.

His people-focused leadership style, industry expertise and sought-after business development skills contribut-ing to excellent performance made him an obvious choice for President and CEO of Nanaimo Port Authority. Ewan’s goal is to focus on all issues related to the port. “We have many stakeholders like recreational boaters, waterfront businesses, the Assembly Wharf and Duke Point in our working relationship.” His vision is to engage the Port’s community partners — the city and Snuneymuxw First Nation — to develop a relationship that ensures all those with an interest in the port work together for a better future.

Ewan has been married to Lesley for 30 years (the girl he met in Glas-gow in 1985) and they have three grown boys. When he is not busy at the Port Authority, Ewan enjoys the freedom of the open road on his motorcycle, hiking, golf and skiing.

Nanaimo Magazine wishes Ewan Moir every success as he takes the Port Authority to the next level.

March is so beautiful here on the Island. I’m enjoying the sound of birds again in our back-yard. While other parts of Canada are still digging out from snow-storms, we’re able to get out and work in the garden.

Daffodils and crocuses are pop-ping out, and our early-blooming lavender and hot pink rhododen-drons are almost open. It’s a time of renewal, and the perfect time to explore the beauty of our natural surroundings. No wonder tourists travel thousands of miles to visit our forests, parks and beaches!

Spring is the perfect time to:

• hike around Westwood Lake or climb Mount Benson

• do a litter pick up on your street or an area where you like to walk

• take your dog for a walk along the sea wall

• clean your birdbath or feeder• visit Rathrevor Park or

Cathedral Grove• order seed catalogues• borrow gardening magazines

or books from the library• reread the childhood classic,

The Secret Garden• visit your favourite garden

nursery• pick up some inexpensive daffo-

dils or tulips at the grocery store• borrow a little person, put

on your boots, and splash in puddles together

• clean your closet and donate to your favourite thrift store

• invite some friends for brunch or a spring tea party

• visit a petting zoo or farm and enjoy the antics of the baby animals

• get in a little spring skiing or tubing at Mt. Washington

• check out the hundreds of varieties of rhododendrons at Kitty Coleman Park near Courtenay or Milner Gardens

• give yourself a pedicure or visit your favourite esthetician—

the sexes, bizarre tourist attractions, funky fashion, bicycle envy, motorcycle dreams, rock-n-roll, religion, politics, pop culture and much more which will make you laugh, groan, curse and bless, but seldom forget Slightly Corked.

The book also makes an excellent gift being far easier to wrap than, say, a medium sized houseplant. Available in Cedar at the Mahle House, Crow and Gate, Coco Café and the Wheatsheaf beer and wine store. In Nanaimo it’s available at Literacy Nanaimo and soon we hope at Flying Fish. With the book treat yourself to a bottle of Bastide Miraflors, an exceptional French red available at Terminal Park for $22.50.

SLIGHTLY CORKED & MORE | BY DELBERT HORROCKS

Do us both a favour and take $20 out of your piggy bank and buy a copy of my recently released book Slightly Corked, an essential addition to your wine and food library. Why damage your own liver when I have already done it for you? Benefit from 50 years of wine drinking experience. Learn how the French Paradox left a Cedar man with cases of white wine growing mould in his cellar. What to do when faced with a tannic, pricy Okanogan red that goes down like Buckley’s and leaves your teeth rattling like castanets. Discover the true story of why the plastic bull affixed to the Sangre De Toro bottle had its male parts down-sized. Be apprised that spitting at a wine tasting should be left to those who don’t mind looking like idiots. Learn why chefs might not be creative, but the Garlic Mashed Potatoes makes a great name for a rock band. Dare to embrace the audacious notion that maybe food and wine don’t go together after all.

But Slightly Corked is about far more than food and wine. It’s also about country living on Vancouver Island with its ill-fated home re-pairs and garden projects, pick-up trucks filled with llama dung, and everyday troubles with deer, chain saws, septic systems and difficult pets. You’ll discover tales of hapless detectives, skirmishes between

Dr Skinlaser is Seeking Your Help

apy. I seek to make current therapy more effective, by a fusion of conventional, and alternative medicine.

Why? A colleague of mine told me that cer-tain oral, and topical vitamin preparations can help skin conditions, and even prevent skin cancer. Others have regarded these ideas as “eccentric,” yet recent studies have indeed shown that certain Vitamin B preparations, can indeed prevent skin can-cer, particularly in high risk populations.

Physicians are notoriously conserva-tive. I too was regarded as “eccentric” for introducing, studying and championing Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to prevent, and now actually treat, skin cancer on the Island. PDT uses a cream applied to an area, followed by light therapy (currently a combination of natural daylight, and a more intense LED light) to melt away pre-cancerous, and certain cancerous skin

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Twenty-two years have passed since I qualified as a Dermatologist at UBC. Look-ing back, I have learnt as much from my patients about the treatment of skin disor-ders, as I have from my mentors, and “Big Pharma.”Currently I am researching herbal, natural and “alternative” therapies for skin conditions, in-cluding skin cancer and ageing. These include vitamin and mineral preparations, as well as plant or herbal-based options.

To further my research, I would be grateful if anyone who has benefited from herbal or natural therapy (for skin conditions only please) could contact me on [email protected], or drop a note off at DrSkinlaser atop Ruth-erford Hill, Nanaimo, or at my Fairfield Skin Clinic, Fairfield Rd, Victoria. Please detail the skin condition helped, and the details of the herbal/alternative treatment used.

I am not turning away from conventional ther-

cells without damaging the ‘good’ cells, unlike most alternatives.

Many modern medicines have their root in herbal or natural remedies. Although the modern rigorous “scientific method” is most laudable, the consequences of the rigorous testing to achieve FDA/Health Canada approval, can turn a simple inexpensive treatment, into something mind bogglingly expensive, and therefore not available to all. For example, Austral-ian aborigines have been using a certain plant to treat skin problems. Recently, an extract of this plant has achieved FDA approval. Alas the final product costs over $500 to just treat the area of your nose, once! This is progress, but at a price not all can afford.

Please let me know about your natural, herbal or alternative skin success stories so I can help others. [email protected]

BEACONS:

A Beginners Guide for Consumers

Beacon technology is still very new. A lot of consumers are unaware of how beacons work or how to use this tech-nology in everyday life. If this applies to you then read our straightforward guide to beacons.

What is a Beacon and How Does It Work?A beacon is a tiny wireless device which broadcasts a signal detectable by a mobile app that is ‘listening’ for signals from nearby beacons. If you happen to go past a beacon, perhaps in a store or on a billboard or sign, it will trigger a notification through the app on your

mobile device. This could be a URL, a cou-pon or another form of media relevant to your location.

For example, if you pass by a house for sale, you can receive a notification directing you to its details. If you’d like a viewing, then contact the realtor directly through the app. Maybe you are in the market for a new vehicle? Just imagine the convenience of viewing the vehicle details directly on your smartphone. Visiting an exhibition or show? Beacons are a fun way to find out more as you walk around. Each beacon has a unique ID so the app on your smart-phone will be able to tell them apart.

What Do I Need to Access Beacon Technology?Just make sure you have a beacon-enabled mobile app on your smart-phone or tablet. Your mobile device will automatically wake-up when it comes within range of a beacon, delivering an internet address directly to your phone. With our app you can text, call or email when you want more information from the seller or retailer, without the need to navigate multiple websites that may not be mobile-optimised. Instead, get the information you want straight away, all while protecting your privacy.

Spring paints vibrancy back into life after the cold winter has blanched our hearts and minds. Spring is more than a season; it warms the earth and renews the spirit! It is the colours of spring that are associated with balance and harmony. As Amy Seidl put it, “The world is exploding in emerald, sage and lusty chartreuse – neon green with so much yellow in it”. The drama of new growth and fertility is easily seen as the environment changes from winter to spring!

As an artist, I have observed that the greens of each season are different from one another. In spring, the foliage glows with warmth and freshness and the leaves appear to be bursting with energy and vitality. Summer greens take on deeper shades, and overall, carry a bluer tone. With cooler temperatures and less light in autumn, plant chlorophyll breaks down quickly and the rich green colours

fade, then disappear. This process allows the yellow, orange and red hues that were always present in the leaves, to be revealed. The greens of winter appear as muted shades of grey in a world of black and white.

I’ve heard it said that the skill of an artist can be appreciated through their effective use of the colour green. That’s understandable, since mixing the ‘right’ greens for a painting can be challenging for many artists. Green is a second-ary colour; it is made by mixing blue and yellow paint together. While artists may use premixed green paint, directly from a tube, the qualities or characteristics achieved by mixing varying amounts of all three primary colours – red, blue, and yellow – together will present infinite possibilities to render spectacular green hues. Practicing mixing paint outdoors is the best way I know to represent Mother Nature’s unlimited palette. As new greens pop from their winter slumber, enjoy the visual feast that spring’s beauty has to offer!

The Seniors Connect Project would like to share new two programs that are connecting older adults to services and important information in Nanaimo and throughout BC.In September 2017, bc211 phone and text services were launched here on Van-couver Island. bc211 offers a confidential telephone, texting and online referral service connecting individuals to hundreds of communities, social and government services. 211 is a free information and

referral service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year in over 160 languages. Anyone in BC can go to bc211.ca to find com-munity, social, non-clinical health, and government services. With the official launch, Vancouver Island residents can dial 2-1-1 and speak to bc211 staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week to con-nect to community resources. Be sure to log on to the site and make sure that your organization or business is included, and information is accurate.

Nanaimo Family Life Association

(NFLA) is collaborating with Shaw TV in Nanaimo to produce a monthly program called “Wise Folks”. The show which is produced by Cathy Holmes from NFLA, focuses on sharing the collective wisdom of older adults as they enter their third stage of life and highlights topics that

are important as we age; including but not limited to mental and physical health, caregiving, social engagement, transportation and so much more. Hosts and camera people are older adults who are stepping up to take on a new challenge and learn new skills and reminding us that we should always remain open to new experiences, as it is truly what makes us “Wise Folks”. Watch it on Shaw TV channel 4, or on YouTube. For more information about seniors programming, visit www.nanaimoseniorsconnect.ca or call 250-591-2924.

Why Choose Retirement Home Living? Is it time to focus on the fun side of life again? At Nanaimo Seniors Village, you can make new friends, do things you enjoy, eat homecooked meals someone else has prepared and leave the housekeeping behind. Our goal at Nanaimo Seniors Village is to enhance the lives of all our residents, allowing people to live as independently as they like, but receive additional assist-ance and support if required through our in-house home support. Nanaimo Seniors Village has pioneered a program which understands the importance of keeping couples together, even if they

are experiencing differing health issues. Because the Village has independent living, assisted living and complex care beds with 24-hour care, the needs of couples can be met in one location, including a separate couples’ dining room.

Nanaimo Seniors Village is a full “Campus of Care”, meaning that residents can age in place. As residents’ needs change, they can be accommodated right here at one loca-tion within our three buildings.

With a bus and a full-time recreation direc-tor, residents can participate in a full slate of activities ranging from games, enter-tainment, shopping, recreational outings, crafts, and exercise classes. Lunch and dinner are prepared on site and served in our bright and spacious dining room. This

aesthetically pleasing location fulfills the comfort needs of the residents – whether at the hair salon, library, fitness room or corner store, most needs can be met right here at home.

For our more independent seniors, we offer Highgate, with condo style living, in-cluding full kitchens and laundry in suite. Highgate allows residents the peace of mind of community living among people with similar interests as well as chef-prepared dinners each night in its own elegant dining room, access to amenities and recreation programs developed for the more active senior.

If you are looking for Independent, Assist-ed, or memory/complex care, please call Kat for more information at 250.760.2325.

Two years ago, Lifeline launched a new service with the support of a Federal Grant. The focus of which is to address social isolation in the senior population in Nanaimo. This is not an easy topic of conversation nor is it easy to identify people who need our help.

Our Nanaimo Lifeline Proposal incorporated 3 scenarios:

Clients who live alone and do not have a network of family and friends connecting with them regularly and frequently: These clients have a real concern about needing help for extended periods of time and not having anybody find them. These would be situations in which they were unable to use their Lifeline button to call for help.

Caregivers of Lifeline clients who need to be out of touch for a short period of time and would suffer increased stress while away: This is a Short-Term service in which Lifeline calls the loved one on behalf of the caregiver, ensuring the caregiver knows somebody is doing that for them.

Users of the Seniors Connect Centre wishing to have regular contact to keep in touch with centre activities: Weekly calls, a friendly conversation and informa-tion as to what activities are available at the centre which they may want to attend.

The Seniors Connect Centre is a collabora-tion of 5 Nanaimo agencies that were suc-cessful in having their proposals granted. Nanaimo Lifeline’s part in the collabora-tion is to call those registered clients at a frequency requested by that client: this has been once per week (we are willing to call more frequently). During that call our staff chats with the client and signs them up for activities at the centre.

We have had some “graduates” of this program. This is a success story of seniors who have made enough connections that they are now too busy to be home to re-ceive a phone call. This is the outcome we desire; if we are to help our socially iso-lated Seniors, we need to help them make connections and build friendships.

Our outcomes are not always measurable. For our Long-Term Lifeline Check-In clients, we cannot put a number on the peace of mind of our daily phone call. Many have a fear that something may happen to them and it could be days before they are found. They do have Lifeline call buttons, but that does not cover all scenarios. These phone calls are quick, simply a “good morning we are pleased you are OK today”. This is immeasurably comforting to the client.

The third category addresses a senior who is temporarily isolated. Caregiver Burnout is a serious problem. We want to help the unpaid family caregiver achieve a break; however it is stressful to go away when you are caring for a senior. We offer a service that ensures the care-receiver is checked on at a pre-de-termined schedule. Our Short-Term Check-In Service is for a period of up to 30 days and arranges for up to three calls daily.

For more information: 250-739-5770 or www.nanaimolifeline.ca and click on PRODUCTS, where you will find the Check-In Service listed.

LETTERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Dear Voyagers,

As I land in Denpasar, the capital of Bali for the fourth time, I notice how much more crowded the airport is compared to 2014 when I was here before.

I have always chosen to come to Bali during the rainy season because the tickets are less expensive, and you can expect fewer tourists. The traffic is all on the left side and everybody drives scooters, sometimes with whole families without helmets on board. The traffic can be very chaotic. There are around 5 mil-

A Letter from Bali

lion people and I have often wondered, how it would be to travel there in high season? For the first time I saw big buses and do not know how they fit on those tiny roads.

There are lots of places you can see or go to in Bali. I would rec-ommend you hire a taxi driver and he will take you to the most famous places on the island. Be careful that you come to an agreement about the price before you start the day. Usually the price is around $10 per hour for a full car of people.

Kuta is the closest city to the airport and I have stayed there a couple of times. I rented a private villa with a swimming pool, but I had to walk to the beach (20-25 minutes.) You can stop on your way for a massage, coffee, or even a drink. I love to browse the numerous small shops and boutiques, including gems like artists’ studios.

If you prefer to stay in a quiet hotel on the beach, it can be very cozy and relaxing. I have tried two places: Jimbaran, south of Kuta, and Rama Candidasa, on the west of the island. Both hotels are on the beach offering wonderful food and spa services.

Balinasian people are mostly Hindus and are friendly and help-ful. I would recommend that you carry your purse close to you. There are pick-pockets but the locals say they are all imported. Although there are all-inclusive hotels, while staying in Bali, I

think one should stay among the people and enjoy the culture Bali has to offer.

On this trip I was traveling with my husband and two

sons, so we knew we needed to be active. We stayed 18 days and did several trips.

Our first trip was river rafting on the biggest and longest Ayung River. The four of us were in one boat with a guide and it was quite a thrill. The trip took four hours.

On our next trip we visited an elephant safari park (Taro Ubud) where you can stay and care for the animals if you want. We had an elephant ride and a fabulous lunch after-wards.

We also went on a snorkeling trip to Biaa Island in a very clear ocean where we could dive for shells. After that we sailed to the beautiful “White Beach” where we rested and had lunch before we sailed a scenic route back to the hotel.

We went on a bicycle tour from our hotel to the nearest town and explored old temples and markets. We drove up to a vol-canic mountain called Gun Vin Gaga which last erupted in 1963. At the foot is the biggest temple in Bali, Pure Be Sakir. We had a guided tour through the rituals of Hinduism, and were able to meditate with candles, flowers and incense.

We spent a whole day in a safari park, and saw the famous white tigers. We visited the Tanah Lot Temple, which is on the south coast of Bali close to Kuta. It is beautiful to be there at sunset and you should also check the tides before you go unless you are willing to wade through the ocean.

We tested the local Luwak coffee, rented a boat to Turtle Island and saw the famous Bad Cave.

In between we rested by the swim-ming pool or took a stroll on the beach. There are lots of interesting things you can see, do and explore in Bali and I know you will have a fabulous time once you get there.

style like this Sefora block heel mule ($69) by Expres-sion from Hudson’s Bay. This will continue in 2018 with multiple variations, from office-appropriate closed-toe styles, with stiletto or block heels, to more casual open-toed options that slip on and off.

Darker Denim - We have recently enjoyed the vintage 90’s-inspired light wash denim, however a darker, more raw version is on the horizon this Spring. Choosing a darker wash will make for an instant wardrobe up-date like this zip hem skinny jeans ($64.90)

from Reitmans.

Transparent and Plastic - Plastic and silk translucent designs are a strong trend this Spring. Whether it’s Lucite block heels, or rain gear, April showers are sure to bring on these water-resistant wares channelling a major 90’s urban vibe. One of the

most common pieces you will be seeing is the windbreaker/

Spring weather can be a guessing game. Just when we think we’ve got it all figured out, the weather changes. As it slowly starts to get warmer, planning ahead will make us that much more prepared to transition into one of our favourite seasons for fashion.

Here are my top 5 Spring fresh and bright trends, which can be all found at Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo.

Edgy Florals, Mixed Prints & Rainbows - The first thing that comes to mind when you think of spring is floral. This season we are seeing some edgier floral cuts with darker hues like this floral printed ponte knit

cocktail dress ($69.95) from Le Chateau. Expect to see vibrant

colours like pinks, reds, yellows worn in either monochrome blocks or artfully spliced together. I am especially loving the pink and red color-ing blocking, stripes and

polka dots right now!

Sweet Shades & Crayon-like Colours - In addition to the bright bold colours, sweet saturated hues like lilac, pink, lemon, and egg blue in the form of ruffles, knits, foot-wear and purses like this Repen hand-bag in Lilac ($50) from Aldo. Saturated crayon-like colors like cherry reds, and juicy oranges will also lead the way this spring if you’re looking for the

statement colour piece.

Footwear - As a busy mom, and businesswoman, the

mule trend won me over thanks to its comfortable

heel height and evolving

Spring into the new Season!

While the rest of Canada is still covered in snow, here on Vancouver Island, daffodils and crocuses, narcissus and tulips are nodding their pretty little heads at us. We have only to walk into Buckerfield’s South to see all the signs of spring. For the gardener, there is plenty to do at this time of year. Moss may well be pretty and soft, but when it’s taking over your lawn and planting beds, action is required. The recipe for success is to first apply lime, followed by fertilizer. Buckerfield’s carries both, individually and in combination: we can choose to apply each separately, we can opt for moss control with a low dose fertilizer (1-0-1) or we can go straight for the more potent version of moss control with the 9-3-6 dose of the good stuff.

It’s also time to get our hands and garden tools dirty as we get the soil ready to go and grow our pretty posies and juicy vegetables. Shovels, rakes, trowels, and every other tool you need to make your job less like work and more like play is ready and waiting for you in the store. Your supply of Spring veggie starts are already waiting to play with you, too.

It doesn’t matter, though, how much we aerate and amend our soils, our veggie garden will not provide us with much if the bees don’t visit. Mason bees arrive in March along with everything you need to attract them. Planting heather and ground covers like creeping thyme will bring them calling and coming around for more.

Don’t forget to keep your bird feeders South End Nanaimo, suite 1-1277 Island Hwy S

topped up and ready for our bird friends, and perhaps check out Fido and Mittens for fleas; they might need you to take a trip to Buckerfield’s South to let them enjoy the start of Spring, too.

Easter Lily Warning from Buddy!

Hello fellow felines, we need to talk…Many of our human servants seem to like Easter Lilies. Do they not understand that these, albeit pretty flowers, are extremely toxic to all our feline-friends? Even a small amount of pollen on our noses (when innocently sniffing/displacing said plant) can cause life threaten-ing kidney failure. Please encourage your human minions to place these “evil” lilies out of reach of our delicate feline paws. Clean any pollen from feline face, fur, whiskers and paws, just another reason to be doted on. If, by chance, contact is made with the “evil lily”, transport to the vet immediately (the cat not the lily).

Stay safe feline friends and don’t miss the opportunity to let your humans know that, YES, the cat does know best.

I had read the books and seen the first two movies in this tril-ogy, so obviously I needed to see the last chapter of this unique and somewhat controversial story. If you haven’t seen the first two, have not read the books, or you really are uncomfortable watching erotica, do not bother with this film. Despite the con-tinuing masochistic theme, the movie was enjoyable. Anastasia and Christian are married, but she is still plagued by his past and hers, as Hyde wants revenge. How will Christian react to the news Anastasia is pregnant? The movie has aspects of the action genre, with high speed car chases and some violence, but the prevailing romantic theme means it is still a movie destined for a girls’ night out. Not for the faint-hearted.

The 2018 Jerome Indoor Games presented by Telus, was held recently at the Olympic Oval in Richmond. 437 athletes, aged 9 to 80, repre-senting 29 clubs from BC, Alberta and Wash-ington State combined to set 24 new records.

Add to this the incredibly addictive “umami” flavour that MSG is well known for and it makes a dangerous combination.

According to the FDA, this synthetic ingredi-ent is acceptable; “MSG is the sodium (salt) of the common amino acid glutamic acid. Glu-tamic acid is naturally present in our bodies, and in many foods and food additives”. How-ever, MSG disrupts the neurotransmitter balance and can have a serious impact on your mood, energy, mental stability, resili-ence, speech, motor-skills, sleep, and hor-monal function (to list a few!) The FDA has

received many complaints about head-aches and allergic-reactions, but claims to be unable to reproduce these effects in human trials.

Because of the questionable opinion “MSG” has garnered, food producers have discovered tricks around food labelling. Much like the way junk-food producers will try to disguise the sheer quantity of sugar by using additional terms like “glucose-syr-up” or “evaporated cane juice”, excess free glutamates can similarly be introduced into our systems through any of the fol-lowing food ingredients:

Although some of the above are ‘naturally occurring’ and not made in a synthetic

process as MSG, they are still add-ing an artificially concentrated level of isolated amino acids tricking our bodies into believ-ing the food is more nourishing than it actually is! The reality is that real food made with fresh ingredi-ents and sea-soned with salt, pepper, and other natural herbs and spices DON’T NEED any of these additional glutamates to be enjoyable.

When you see any of the above ingredi-ents listed, especially MSG, it should trig-ger you to ask the question “what is this food missing that they are needing to cover up with this additional burst of artificial flavour?”
