Fox Tales

The Heartbeat

Every time I go to

camp I have a unique, won-

derful and spiritual experi-

ence. Each year it is different;

unconnected in the type of

experience, but connected by

being in the moments of

God's presence at Pilgrim

Cove Camp. The camp is

truly a place where one can

feel the power and majesty of

Creation at the same time

being swept over with a calm

and peace that centers you.

Quite often the special mo-

ments I remember come in the

quiet of the morning before

the camps and lake residents

awake. At least the human

residents. I often encounter

some of God's other creatures

that take advantage of the

forest, huckleberry bushes,

grass and lake that the camp

offers. Robins, crows, hum-

mingbirds, geese, loons and

deer have been among my

morning visitors. I had a new

one the first morning at camp

this year. I had seen her be-

fore last year near the lodge.

But this time we had a "visit"

as I sat alone by the lake. A

one on one encounter.

I didn't ask her name,

though I'm sure she has one

given to her by Chef Lu or

Lori, but did get to spend a

good deal of time with her.

As I sat on the bench, look-

ing over the lake, preparing

my thoughts for morning

worship, out of the corner

of my eye I spotted move-

ment. Ms. Fox came lop-

ing towards me. She

slowed and hesitantly came

closer. Eyes alert, nose

sniffing the air and a slight

slouch to her posture, she

moved closer and closer. I

realized that she was look-

ing for handout. Chef Lu

feeds her eggs most every

morning and I guess she

thought I looked like a

good source for an appe-

tizer. Unfortunately, I had

not expected her and had

no food to give her.

Instead, we had a one sided

conversation for about 5 min-

utes. She would approach me,

back off, then repeat. Finally

she kind of gave up and

headed for the woodpile to

contemplate the situation. We

shared the quiet of the lake for

a few more minutes then I had

to leave to prepare for the

morning. Off I set for the

lodge. I started up the hill and

turned to take in the view.

There she was, about ten feet

behind me following along. I

was headed towards the lodge

and kitchen and so was she.

At the top of the hill we parted

ways, me to my cabin and the

fox to the lodge door to await

Chef Lu.

Later I thought about

this encounter as I considered

our invasion in to the fox's and

all the other wildlife's land.

They have had an immigration

problem not so different than

what the native American's

had centuries ago, or we de-

bate today. How strange the

circle is. How unexpectedly

God speaks to us and reminds

us of His wishes, His com-

mands. How easily we take

for ourselves that which is our

Creator's to be shared by all

Her creation. How remarkably

the little fox on the wood pile

tells a tale as the voice of our

still speaking
