Monologue Example

DIRECTIONS Read the comedic monologue by a person pretending to be Steve Jobs. See how they combine fact with fiction to make the performance funny.

A monologue is a long speech given by one person. Monologues are often given by comedians. They are also done by actors who are trying to win a role in a movie or play.

Steve Jobs Comedic Monologue

Hi, I’m Steve Jobs. You can call me Stevie, Stevie Stevie, or Stevie Gonna Give Ya Jobs. I like the last one best, because that’s what I did. I made a huge and successful company and gave jobs to many people. Maybe you have heard of it. It’s called Apple.

To be honest, Apple nearly wasn’t called Apple. I almost called it Banana. I love bananas. Now wouldn’t that be cool. Imagine you went back home, and you told your parents you bought a Banana phone. Don’t you think the banana is a perfect shape for a phone?

However, my workmates didn’t think Banana was a good name for a company. They all said bananas were too easy to squeeze and squash. No one would want to by a phone from a company that sounded like they could easily be broken, so we called it Apple instead.

Apples are hard. They are also filled with juicy goodness; just like the phones I made. Did you just hear what I said? I said the phones “I” made. That’s right. Me! I wanted to call the phones Steve Jobs Phones. My workmates thought the name was too long, so I agreed to iPhone, because “I” was the person who made them.

You should be thanking me. I am the man. I am the iPhone. I am Steve Jobs. You’re welcome!
