Evaluation Situation 4
In the computer industry, some people say that they are artists because they “create”
programs. They say it takes a lot of imagination to create fun video games. Are they real
“artists” or are they simply “technicians”?
A Definition
The meaning of
“artist” is a bit
vague. What is
an artist?
We can say that artists have to produce
something:
• A song, poem, book, etc.;
• Dancing, singing or other type of
performance;
• A painting, a sculpture, a drawing or
another creation;
Artists have to use their imagination to create something
new. The artist’s creation has to stimulate our thoughts and
emotions.
An artist is a person who
creates “art” or a person
that is skilled at some
activity.
What is an artist?
Examples of people who create
new things with their
imagination:
• A gymnast who creates a new
routine;
• A football coach who creates
new plays to win games;
• An inventor of a new product;
• A designer who makes new
collections;
• A teacher who creates a new
activity for his class.

His Childhood1
John Lennon was born in Liverpool in October 1940
during the Second World War. In his childhood, he
saw little of his father who went missing while serving
in the navy. For several years, John was brought up by
his aunt Mimi.
In his early years, John was a mischievous student.
While in his early teens he got his first guitar and
would spend many hours playing. His aunt Mimi, used
to regularly say: “The guitar's all very well, John, but
you'll never make a living out of it." After the Beatles
were famous, John presented Mimi with a silver platter with this quote on it.
The Beatles
In 1957, he met and formed a successful musical
partnership with Paul McCartney. They complemented
each other very well. Lennon was considered the
leader of the Beatles, due to his superior age and also
his musical abilities. After being rejected by many
music companies, they eventually signed a deal with
Parlophone in 1962.

The Life of an Artist: John Lennon
Revised Version, October 2011
Evaluation Situation 7
John Lennon was no stranger to controversy. John Lennon said that “the Beatles were more popular
than Jesus Christ”. It led to a boycott in the United States. There was also a wave of record burnings,
although Lennon remarked that to burn them they had to buy them first.
In 1969 the Beatles had started to split up; it was John Lennon who was the main factor behind this.
His Solo Career
After 1970, John Lennon created a very successful solo career, often with the help of his second wife,
Yoko Ono. In the early 1970s, John Lennon also became a figurehead for the anti war Movement. His
song “Give Peace a Chance” became an anthem for the anti-war movement. His song “Imagine” has
also become a very influential song; it was voted 'most popular song’ in Britain.
John Lennon was shot dead in 1980, by an obsessed fan, in front of his home. The death shocked the
world, both musical and non musical.

Evaluation Situation 11
We are all artistic up to a certain degree.
Here are 3 teens who explain their artistic side.
Wilson
My name is Wilson. I’m a
student in secondary 1 on
the south shore of
Montreal.
I spend most of my time at
school. School is okay but
what I really like is playing
music. I play the saxophone.
It’s a great instrument.
I like to play music because
it makes me feel good.
When I play music, I don’t think about my problems or anything else. I just
concentrate on the sounds I produce.
For me, music is essential. I need to play music every day.
This is why I think I am an artist.

Evaluation Situation 12
Cindy My friends call me “C” but my real name is
Cindy. I’m 14 years old. I was born in Canada
but my parents are from Europe and Asia.
I love to travel. I like to see different
cultures. I think we can learn a lot from
other people.
One thing I love about travelling is shopping.
I like to buy new clothes. For me, what you
wear is who you are. Your clothes show your
personality.
I think that my artistic side is my sense of
fashion. I’m good at finding matching
clothes and creating new styles.
Joel
I’m Joel. I’m 15 and I’m in secondary 2.
I live in Longueuil, close to Montreal.
I’m a good hockey player. Hockey is my
life. When I come back home after school, I
run outside to play with my friends. We
play on the rink in the winter or in the
school yard in the summer.
When I play hockey, I like to create new plays. Scoring a goal with a surprising
new play gives me an incredible feeling. It takes a lot of talent and
imagination to be a good player. This is why I think that I’m a bit of an artist.

the average Canadian worker who makes $31,757 a year.

Evaluation Situation 15
Working Conditions
60% of artists are self-employed. This means that they don’t have “regular” steady jobs. They get
contracts for specific jobs or sell what they create. When you are self-employed, you are your own
boss: you make the decisions.
The other 40 % of artists have regular jobs. They work for newspapers, magazines, book and
software publishers; motion picture and video industries and other businesses. They have more job
stability and a regular salary.
How many…?
Artists represent about 0.8% of all the
workers in Canada. There are more female
(71,000) than male (59,700) artists.
Conclusion
We can definitely say that the vast majority of
artists are not rich superstars. Some are self-
employed and can have more freedom in
making decisions but they also make much
less money that the average Canadian.
A friend of mine says, “I don’t make lots of money as an artist but I love what I do!”
