Lesson Overview:

1. Students identify and pronounce Arabic sounds.

2. Students read, write, listen to and repeat letters and sounds.

Procedures:

Anticipatory Set: (10 minutes)

1. Students prepare for this lesson by recalling essential information about the Arabic alphabet and

two-way connectors.

2. Students fill in the two-way connectors in order to complete the chart. Students to be encouraged to

repeat/say the letters and they write them.

3. Teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding.

Guided Notes: (15 minutes)

1. Teacher states the learning objective of the day: to identify and produce letters and sounds in

Arabic.

2. Teacher reviews and students repeat the sounds for vowels.

3. Teacher shows best comparisons of Arabic sounds using English words as students repeat.

4. Teacher checks for understanding and allows for student questions.

Guided Practice: (15 minutes)

1. Teacher states the purpose of the Guided Practice: to connect vowels and with other letters.

2. Teacher models how to say each letter and then write each letter in a connected format beginning

from right to left.

3. Students identify and say each letter. Students then string the letters together following the examples

provided.

4. Teacher informally assesses speaking and writing by circulating the room to listen and assist.

5. After a sufficient amount of time, teacher checks for understanding and allows for student questions.

Independent Practice: (15 minutes)

1. Teacher states the purpose of the Independent Practice: to identify Arabic letters.

2. Students examine three consecutive letters of the Arabic alphabet and determine which letter is

missing. Students provide the missing letter. (Two versions of the Independent Practice have been

provided to be selected as teacher prefers.)

3. After a sufficient amount of time, teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding.

Closure: (5 minutes)

1. Teacher states the purpose of the Closure: to indentify Arabic letters when I hear them.

2. Teacher dictates letters to students as they attempt to write what they hear. Teacher reads each

letter twice. Students write the letters they hear, from right to left.

3. Teacher instructs students to review the listening exercise and determine which sounds / letters

they find challenging. Students may be asked to share their findings with the class, a partner or as a

‘ticket to leave’ question.

4. Optional use of Learning Goal Log for students to reflect upon and record learning and as a broad

formative assessment of student ability.
