LAB PROCEDURE
Reaction #12: Liquid Isopropyl Alcohol and Oxygen Gas React to Form…
C3H7OH (l) + O2 (g)
Required Materials:
goggles
large beaker to smother fire if needed
lighter
tongs
70% rubbing alcohol
plastic pipette
porcelain bowl
Procedure:
1) Put on your goggles. Secure all loose clothing and jewelry and tie back hair!
2) Obtain a large beaker, lighter, a bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol, a plastic pipette, and a porcelain bowl.
3) Transfer one squirt of 70% rubbing alcohol from the bottle to the porcelain bowl using the plastic
pipette.
4) Record your observations in the space below of the 70% rubbing alcohol and oxygen gas BEFORE the
reaction.
5) Ignite the 70% rubbing alcohol in the porcelain bowl using a lighter. Record your observations
DURING the reaction.
6) After the fire has been extinguished record your observations AFTER the reaction.

Reaction #12 C3H7OH (l) + O2 (g)
BEFORE:
Observation of
Reactants
DURING:
Observations as
the reaction occurs
AFTER:
Observation of
Products
Clean Up:
1) Rinse off the porcelain bowl in the sink. Dry off the porcelain bowl with a paper towel.
2) Return the large beaker, lighter, bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol, plastic pipette, tongs, and porcelain bowl
to your instructor.

Q3 – Chemical Reactions
POST-LAB QUESTIONS
1) Go through your observations for all 12 experiments you performed. Then list three
observation you made that indicate that a chemical reaction has definitely taken place.
a. ________________________________________________________________________
b. ________________________________________________________________________
c. ________________________________________________________________________
2) Did a reaction seem to occur in all 12 experiments? If not, identify one experiment where
there was no apparent chemical reaction.
Reaction #_______: ______________________________________________________________________
3) Chemical reactions are classified into 4 general categories based on how many reactants and
products are involved in the reaction.
24
a) Synthesis – A New Relationship
• There is only one product.
o Reaction #________: 4Fe (s) + 3O2 (g) + 2H2O (l)
▪ The product of this reaction is ____________, a brownish-red substance that
coats the iron wire.
o Reaction #________: 2H2 (g) + O2 (g)
▪ The product of this reaction is _________________________, a colorless, odorless
liquid that is essential for life.
b) Decomposition – A Breakup
• There is only one reactant.
o Reaction #________: 2H2O2 (aq)
▪ The products of this reaction are _________________________, a colorless,
odorless liquid that is essential for life, and _____________________, which is
essential for breathing and for fire to burn.
o Reaction #_______: 2H2O (l)
▪ The products of this reaction are two colorless gases. One is the element
___________________________, which is essential for breathing and for fire to
burn. The other element is ________________________, which is the first
element on the periodic table.
25
c) Single Replacement – The Single One Steals Someone’s Partner
• There are always two reactants and two products. One reactant is always an
element, and one product is always a different element.
o Reaction #______: 3CuSO4 (aq) + 2Al (s)
▪ The products of this reaction are the element _________________________, a
reddish-brown metal that covers the outside of pennies, and the salt
_________________________ sulfate (Al2(SO4)3).
o Reaction #______: 2HCl (aq) + Mg (s)
▪ The products of this reaction are the element ________________________,
which is the first element on the periodic table that reacts explosively with
oxygen, and the salt ______________________________ chloride (MgCl2).
o Reaction #______: 2Al (s) + Fe2O3 (s)
▪ The products of this reaction are the element __________________________,
which has the symbol Fe and is the primary component of steel, and the salt
____________________________________ oxide (Al2O3).
d) Double Replacement – A Partner Swap
• There are always two reactants and two products. The reactants are always two
compounds, and the products are always two different compounds.
o Reaction #_____: CaCl2 (aq) + Na2CO3 (aq)
26
▪ The products of this reaction are the salt _______________________________
(NaCl), which is common table salt, and __________________________________
(CaCO3), which is chalk.
o Reaction #______: CH3COOH (aq) + NaOH (aq)
▪ The products of the reaction are the salt __________________________________
(NaC2H3O2), which is used in instant hot packs, and _____________________, a
colorless, odorless liquid that is essential for life.
e) Complete Combustion - Burning
• There are always two reactants and two products. The reactants are always a
hydrocarbon and oxygen gas, and the products are always carbon dioxide and water
vapor.
o Example: CH4 (g) + 2O2 (g) CO2 (g) + 2H2O (g)
i) Identify one reaction from your 12 experiments that is a combustion reaction.
a. Reaction _____: ____________________________________________________
ii) Predict the products of this reaction.
