IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVES:

• SWBAT define a bar graph and the purpose of using bar graphs

• SWBAT define the vocabulary words more, less, and same

• SWBAT collect data and organize data accurately in a bar graph

• SWBAT read and interpret the data in bar graphs COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS:

• CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less.

• CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented.

OUTLINE

• Bar graphs- more (longer/bigger), less (shorter/smaller), same o Look up different types of butterflies by species, identify min/max

wingspan, create bar graphs, identify more, less, same

• Bug populations are declining, it’s bad, and why o Upward extension: briefly look at line graphs- increase, decrease, no

• Butterfly populations are declining, it’s bad, and why o Upward extension: briefly look at line graphs- increase, decrease, no

change

• EXTENSION: Butterfly garden o Look up different types of nectar plants and host plants, identify height,

create bar graphs o Plant info sheets if any student wants to petition to buy it for the school

LOL (sun exposure, soil, height, spread, cost at Home Depot…)

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

Numbers are very important – not just in math class, but in your every day life

and around the world. Grocery stores use numbers to keep track of how many boxes

of cereal they have on the shelf or how much money they earned. Doctors use

numbers to measure your temperature, height, and weight. Scientists use numbers

to measure length, speed, and volume. The list goes on and on!

When you collect a lot of numbers, you end up with a chart like this:

Do you think this chart is helpful for people who are trying to understand the numbers??

Because I DON’T GET IT!!!!!

There has GOT to be a better way to

organize these numbers…

Graphs to the Rescue!

Graphs help us to organize numbers in a clear way, that is easy to understand. For example, a pie graph organizes numbers into different-sized slices. The bigger the number, the bigger the slice! Can you identify the types of graphs below?

Comparing with a Bar Graph

Bar graphs show information in bars. Bars look like rectangles. Each bar’s

length represents a number. The bigger the number, the taller the bar. The smaller

the number, the shorter the bar. With a bar graph, it is easy to compare items as the

most, the least, or the same.

Directions: Label the bars below using the words in the word bank.

Butterfly Wingspans

Did you know that not all butterflies are the same size?

Entomologists, bug scientists, measure the size of butterflies

by their wingspan. Wingspan is how long the butterfly is from

the tip of one wing to the tip of the other wing. Some

butterflies are teeny tiny, less than 1 centimeter wide. Some

butterflies are enormous, up to 1 foot long!

Directions: Using a ruler, measure the wingspan of the butterflies below. Make sure you measure from tip to tip! You can draw a line across the wings if that helps.

Comprehension Questions - PRACTICE Directions: Use your graph to answer the following questions. 1. Which type of butterfly has the wingspan with the most inches? (biggest)

2. Which type of butterfly has the wingspan with the least inches? (smallest)

3. Are there any types of butterflies that have the same wingspan?

* Bonus: What is the difference in wingspan between the first butterfly and the second butterfly? Show your work below.

** Bonus: What is the difference in wingspan between the third butterfly and the fourth butterfly? Show your work below.
