Powder Puff 2013 Student leaders have created a safe

and inclusive alternative to the annual Powder Puff football game between the junior and senior classes. Similar to years past, students will take part in a spirited week of Islander celebration, culminating in a pep rally and class competition.

This year, the juniors and seniors will

engage in an afterschool game of Dodge Ball. We believe that a wider range of students will be able to participate, practices can occur within the defined limits of our insurance

coverage, and, most importantly, that this activity will reduce the risk of serious injury among our participants. Our ASB leadership developed a comprehensive plan to make this event available to any/all students, and energy surrounding the event is already gaining excitement. Information on how to get involved and participate will be provided to all juniors and seniors in April.

The decision to redesign Powder Puff was based around the goals of maintaining the tradition of a spirited ‘junior vs. senior’ event, while retaining student safety as our top priority. We understand and regret that this change will not be welcomed by all CHS shareholders; however, we will no longer endorse or support a football game without proper training, equipment, and officiating.

No alternative junior vs. senior

football game, on or off campus, will be authorized by Coronado Unified School District.

Prom 2013

Our junior class has planned Prom 2013 and will be held on Saturday, April 13th, at the Bahia Resort Hotel. Please mark your calendars — additional information will be available on our website and in the daily bulletin. Also see pg. 5 of this newsletter.

Fan Behavior

Administrators and our Athletic Director will supervise athletic events with these priorities in mind: promoting the health and safety of our students, the success of student-athletes on the field, and high standards of character. We will continue to emphasize our expectations, in accordance with the CIF Code of Conduct, that fans cheer positively for our teams and demonstrate sportsmanship and Islander pride in the stands.

We ask our supporters to refrain from engaging with opposing fans and players (weight, name, number, etc.), using of profanity, and making disrespectful comments to referees.

If you have any questions

regarding how we monitor fan behavior, please feel free to contact me.

Health Science Pathway Expanding

In conjunction with existing CTE Health Science Pathway courses (Sports Medicine, Advanced Sports Medicine, and Biotechnology), CHS is pleased to announce that we will begin offering Medical Biology in Fall 2013.

Medical Biology is an approved

University of California 'A-G' course that fulfills the Biology/ Laboratory Science requirement needed for high school graduation as well as state college and university admissions. The course is aligned with California Science standards and will prepare students for subsequent placements in any/all CHS Science department course offerings by emphasizing human anatomy and physiology.

This course gives students

interested in health career occupations the opportunity to be a part of the CHS Health Science Pathway, a four-year course of study that includes internship placements and matriculated/dual-credit experiences. So, AP Bio can come next? School Safety

Safety is a shared responsibility. Please remind your child to report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult. This may be a comment from a peer, a car that circles our campus during break/lunch, or a person of interest who is unfamiliar to members of our school community. CHS faculty will exercise diligence in the monitoring of our gates and filtering of visitors on our campus; all visitors are required to check in through the front office and wear a visitor’s badge.

This shift created an imbalanced semester. We are seeking feedback prior to recommending our calendar for the 2013-14 school year. Information and a link will be sent, via email, to all students in mid-March. CSF Connect-A-Thon (3/14)

Please support CSF! We are proud to host the second student-produced Connect-A-Thon live at the CHS quad and theatre on Thursday, March 14th, from 5PM – 9PM.

Members of the Coronado

community are encouraged to visit the food court (proceeds benefit CSF and the CHS Senior Class), participate in fun activities, and watch live performances from CUSD students.

Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF)

provides essential funding for science, technology, enrichment, lab consumables, and STEAM courses. These experiences help to define our distinguished schools by providing a quality education that engages and prepares our student body to face challenges with confidence as they transition beyond high school. Go Islanders! Karl Mueller Principal

Enrichment Courses

Through the generous Francis Harpst Legacy Gift, we have been fortunate to offer one-credit enrichment courses to CHS students outside of the instructional day.

In partnership with all sites in the

Coronado Unified School District, Coronado Schools Foundation approved use of these funds to create experiences for our students in the area of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math). Enrichment Courses provide opportunities for our faculty to teach subjects they are passionate about outside of the core academic course of study. More importantly, we believe that these courses create positive student connections with our staff and school community.

Our third cycle of enrichment will

begin on March 11th and will include classes in art, music, science, and engineering. Course descriptions and meeting days/times will be emailed to students in early March. Enrichment classes are pass/fail, require a two-hour/week commitment, and run in 10-week cycles.

Thank you, Coronado Schools Foundation, for making Enrichment Courses at CHS a reality! Student Survey

All CHS students will receive an invitation to participate in a survey regarding our academic calendar. This year, CHS students completed first semester prior to Winter Break.

Saturday, April 13th at the scenic Bahia Resort in Mission Bay

Prom is relatively early this year because of scheduled school events with sports, CoSA, and AP testing in May. Due to concerns in the past years with the date of Prom, this day seemed to be the most logical and inclusive date to have the dance.

Tickets on sale March 17 – March 29

No tickets will be sold the week after Spring Break, so buy your tickets early.

Prom will be an amazing event that no junior or senior will want to miss! More details will be coming soon!

Welcome to the CHS Parents' Book Club!

Meeting: Monday, March 11 at 7:00PM in the CHS Library

We will be reading The Gift of An Ordinary Day: A Mother's Memoir, by Katrina Kenison

From Amazon.com's book description: “The Gift of an Ordinary Day is an intimate memoir of a family in transition - boys becoming teenagers, careers ending and new ones opening up, an attempt to find a deeper sense of place, and a slower pace, in a small New England town. It is a story of mid-life longings and discoveries, of lessons learned in the search for home and a new sense of purpose, and the bittersweet intensity of life with teenagers--holding on, letting go.

Poised on the threshold between family life as she's always known it and her older son's departure for college, Kenison is surprised to find that the times she treasures most are the ordinary, unremarkable moments of everyday life, the very moments that she once took for granted, or rushed right through without noticing at all.”

Copies of the book are available at Coronado Bay Books bookstore. To read a poem by Mary Karr on a similar theme (about her son), see: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/06/12/DI2008061202499.html Feel free to join the discussion about parenting teens whether you've read the book or not!

Hope to see you there.

Coronado High School Senior Awards Program Application Process

Coronado High School is part of an incredibly generous community which contributes thousands of dollars in scholarships to our seniors. On top of scholarships, CHS also has a large number of non-monetary awards and recognitions given out to students each year. Each spring a committee of administrators and faculty members meet to determine which seniors will receive these scholarships and awards. The scholarships and awards come with eligibility criteria such as academic performance, service, type of college the student will attend, and the student’s chosen field of study, to name just a few. In order to collect the information necessary for the committee to match students to these criteria, we are asking students to complete a short Senior Scholarship and Award Application on Family Connection and provide an optional essay. If a student chooses to write the essay, it should briefly describe what the student has achieved or contributed in the past four years. The achievement or contribution could be in the areas of academics, the arts, music, sports, school service, community service, or leadership. The student should choose to write about whatever is most important to them and may include more than one of these areas. The essay should be no more than one page in length and delivered to Mrs. Belong in room 702. If your student needs assistance or has questions regarding the application process, they may come see Mrs. Belong in Room 702 at lunch on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. The deadline to complete both the form and the essay is Monday April 1, 2012. Students can access Family Connection through Edline. If they have forgotten their Family Connection username or password, they may e-mail Mr. Geiger at [email protected] for assistance. Please encourage your student to take the time to complete these forms whether they plan to attend a trade school, community college, or four year university. Without this information the committee will not be able to match students to many of the scholarships and awards.

Please make sure your student meets the deadline. The Senior Awards Committee wants to honor as many of our seniors as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Belong at [email protected].

Has your senior received an outside award/scholarship for continuing education??

If your student is the recipient of a scholarship or award (academic, athletic, skill based, etc...)

from an organization or school outside of CHS, we want to know about it! We would like to recognize all of the awards and scholarships that our seniors have received by including a list of awards in both the graduation and the senior awards programs. Please email Mrs. Nicole Belong at [email protected] with your good news.

Most businesses in our community are supportive of our school’s programs and events. They generously make donations of food items, gift cards, discounts, etc. Sometimes they post ads on their windows for upcoming CHS events, or they host fundraising events in their stores. Some businesses take it one step further. Weincakes Dessert Bistro is one of those businesses.

Recently, Weincakes hired a CHS student whose goal is to have a career as a pastry chef. At Weincakes, the student is working in a professional kitchen with those already in the profession. He performs duties that will more than likely give him the food service experience required for admission into his preferred school, a top culinary college in the United States, located in Napa Valley. Working alongside two degreed pastry chefs – one a graduate of Grégoire-Ferrandi School of Pastry, Paris – he is completing tasks on his own, learning valuable skills and techniques, and the art of patisserie while getting real-world experience and networking.

Weincakes Dessert Bistro partners with CHS under an internship program to provide this opportunity for our students. Additionally, Weincakes liaisons with the Culinary Arts class teacher and serves as advisor to the culinary program.

Weincakes Dessert Bistro offers mouthwatering pastries; delicious soups, salads, and coffees – eat in or take out. Catering and custom order services are also available. Everything is made from fresh, top quality ingredients. It's a great place for dessert and coffee. If you are on the go running errands, Weincakes is a time saver with their tasty light bites served throughout the day! Located at the corner of B Avenue and Ynez Place, Weincakes is owned by CHS mom Toni Weinfurtner.

Opportunities like this one are offered through CHS/ROP internship programs. Job settings allow the students to understand how an industry works and what is actually required in a specific job. Worksite placement is based on the student’s career interest. Internship opportunities exist in many fields of interest including event management, publicity and graphic design, online editor/marketing, and baseball league operations. Furthermore, a student may earn additional academic credit through enrollment in the Career Training for Transition class at CHS. This class provides students with essential skills in career planning and preparation.

If interested in the academic credit class or in an internship opportunity – as a student or as a community partner, contact Mrs. Aida Diaz at [email protected] or (619) 522-6203.

Islander Company: December 2012 to February 2013

By Ken Ireland

Coronado High School’s award winning Navy Junior ROTC unit, known as “Islander Company” on the campus, has had a busy few months. The team competed in drill meets in Ramona and Phoenix, Arizona, as well as hosting a drill meet on the Coronado High School campus for the first time ever. The team competed in exhibition and basic drill, academics, and physical training, and brought home a 3rd place trophy at the Ramona and Coronado meets, qualifying Islander Company to compete for the Area Drill Championship in early March. In addition to competing at the drill meet in Arizona, the cadets were hosted by the Navy ROTC midshipmen at Arizona State University for a campus tour, providing many Islander Company cadets their first glimpse of life after high school.

In December Islander Company began collecting toys for the Toys for Tots drive, giving over 100 donated toys to the Marine Corps Reserve, where they were given to children who aren’t fortunate enough to get presents on the holidays. Cadet Justin Meek’s platoon led the charge, with the largest percentage of donated toys earning his platoon a pizza and ice cream party shortly before the holiday break. Islander Company marched in the Coronado Christmas Parade, a highlight of the school year, and afterwards enjoyed a great family potluck in Islander Company spaces, along with a cadet gift exchange and some awful karaoke singing.

Islander Company started off January with a trip to the University of San Diego (USD), where they

were hosted by the Navy ROTC unit. They toured the campus and visited the Navy ROTC unit. That evening, they attended the USD-Loyola basketball game. Islander Company’s Color Guard presented the colors for the game, which was televised regionally. In addition, the Islander Company Armed Exhibition Team performed a flawless Drill Routine during the halftime show, wowing the crowd of over 5,000 spectators, including 500 Marines from MCRD San Diego. “This year we’ve done two college visits, with a visit to the Naval Academy scheduled later in the year” said Senior Naval Science Instructor Captain Ken Ireland, “it is important that our cadets understand that the hard work they are putting in with their academic studies can pay a big dividend after high school with the opportunity to attend a four year college and even earn a Navy ROTC scholarship, as several of their predecessors have done.”

Cadets John Wilson, Cole Summers, Adam Espe and Nick Gallop perform an Armed Exhibition routine at halftime of the University of San Diego versus Loyola University Men’s Basketball game on the USD campus on January 16th, 2013.

Cadets of Islander Company have also teamed with the Engineering classes taught by Mr. Erik

Olson, to construct underwater remotely operated vehicles called “Sea Perch.” The kits were assembled by teams of three or four cadets and engineers, culminating in poolside competition in late January. This coordinated effort, which spanned about two hours of class time a week over an eight week period, taught budding engineers teamwork skills as well as practical experience in soldering, cutting pipe and rigging and installing electric motors.

Cadets and Engineers prepare their “Sea Perch” ROV for an operational test.

Islander Company met a milestone on February 2nd when they hosted a major drill meet. This event included 600 participants from Navy Junior ROTC cadets from sixteen schools from throughout central and southern California. “This was the first time Coronado High School has ever hosted such a large event” said Ireland, “and it was an amazing team effort. The parents of cadets, the cadets who didn’t compete, and the Sailors and Marines from nearby units managed this major competition flawlessly. We simply couldn’t have done it without everyone pulling together. All the visiting schools commented on how well the meet was run and are looking forward to this drill meet becoming an annual event.”

Finally, on February 13th Islander Company conducted their annual Pass In Review on the football

field at the high school. This event is part of the Area Managers Inspection, where Islander Company is evaluated by the Navy. The event was viewed by over 75 friends of Islander Company, including parents, teachers, Principal Karl Mueller, Assistant Principals Jenny Moore and Shane Schmiechel, and Coronado School Board President Dawn Ovrom. Spectators were entertained by an Armed Exhibition presentation led by Cadet Cole Summers. The “ex team” wowed the crowd with their precision and discipline in coordinated movements with their drill rifles. The Guest of Honor for the Pass in Review was Navy Captain Eugene Paluso, the Commander of Navy Special Warfare Group Three. In his remarks, Captain Paluso told the cadets “What you are doing today makes a difference, in your lives, in your school, your community and our nation. You are learning skills like attention to detail and self-discipline and teamwork that will serve you well regardless of whether you join the military as an adult or not.”

There is no let-up in Islander Company’s schedule in the upcoming months. Islander Company

will send 40 cadets to the Area Drill Championships on March 2nd at Santa Ana High School. The following week, after a field trip to Coast Guard Air Station San Diego and the USS Midway Museum, several Islander Company cadets will head to Arizona to compete in the Navy Southwestern Region Orienteering Championships on March 9th. The following Saturday Islander Company is hosting two events, a Brain Brawl, which is a team academic competition in a Jeopardy format, and the annual Military Ball, where over 150 cadets and their guests will hear from former Islander Company Senior Naval Science Instructor Captain Lee Pontes and then dance the night away at their gala at the Coronado Community Center.
