    The National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC) is anorganization that assesses and accreditsinstitutions of higher education in India.

    It is an autonomous body funded by University Grants CommissionofGovernment of Indiaheadquartered in anga!ore.

    NAAC "as estab!ished in #$$% in res&onse to recommendations of Nationa! 'o!icyin ducation (#$*). This &o!icy "as to +address the issues of deterioration inqua!ity of education+, and the '!an of Action ('-A#$$/) !aid out strategic &!ansfor the &o!icies inc!uding the estab!ishment of an inde&endent nationa!accreditation body.0/1021Consequent!y, the NAAC "as estab!ished in #$$% "ith itsheadquarters at anga!ore.

    Assessment and Accreditation is broad!y used for understanding the 34ua!ity5tatus6 of an institution. In the conte7t of 8igher ducation, the accreditation

    status indicates that the &articu!ar 8igher ducationa! Institutions (8I) 9 aCo!!ege, a University, or any other recognised Unit therein, meets the standardsof qua!ity as set by the Accreditation Agency, in terms of its &erformance, re!atedto the educationa! &rocesses and outcomes, covering the curricu!um, teaching!earning, eva!uation, facu!ty, research, infrastructure, !earning resources,organisation, governance, :nancia! "e!! being and student services.

    Accreditation facilitates

    institution to know its strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities through an informed

    review process.

    identification of internal areas of planning and resource allocation

    collegiality on the campus.

    funding agencies look for objective data for performance funding.

    institutions to initiate innovative and modern methods of pedagogy.

    new sense of direction and identity for institutions.

    the society look for reliable information on quality education offered.

    employers look for reliable information on the quality of education offered to the

    prospective recruits.

    intra and inter-institutional interactions.

Accreditation refers to thecerti:cation given by NAAC "hich is va!id for a &eriod of :ve years. At &resentthe Assessment and Accreditation by NAAC is done on a vo!untary basis.
