In what is known today as the Orphan Train Movement, an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned,and homeless children were moved by rail out of American cities between 1854 and 1929. AncestryPlus has a full file of census images, military records,immigration records, the Social Security Death Index, many citydirectories, land records, tax lists, and ship passenger lists. Becauseof licensing restrictions, AncestryPlus is only available in the Library.

HeritageQuest Online has over 9,000 printed volumes of family andlocal history, all indexed and searchable, and is currently makingindexed images of census records available online. Fold3 providesconvenient access to US military records, including the stories,photos, and personal documents of the men and women who served.Suffolk Historic Newspapers provides online access to digitizedversions of 12 local newspapers, including obituaries, covering nearly100 years of Suffolk County history. All three of these resources canbe accessed remotely via the “Research Tools” link on the Library’sweb page.
