N. O. VEZHLIVTSEV'S SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY Nikolai Osipovich Vezhlivtsev, chief engineer of the State Inspection Laboratory for measuring equipment in the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, is celebrating his 60th birthday. N. O. VezhIivtsev is the oldest metrologist of the Republic. His profound knowledge and unswerving rectitude are well known to all who have worked with him. N.O. Vezhlivtsev started his working life at the age of 15 at the wood-chemical plant in his native Verkhne-Taimensk district of the Archangel region. Later he participated in the building of the Archangel sawmill. On completing his service as a frontier guardsman, N. O. Vezhlivtsev dedicated his life to metrology. At first he started as a mechanic in repairing measuring instruments at the "Gosmetroves" trust. Later he completed his studies at the Kalyazinsk industrial technical school and became inspector at the Archangel Weights and Measures Administration. In 1935 N. O. Vezhlivtsev was promoted to the grade of State Inspector and sent as representative of the Central Weights and Measures Administration to the Komi ASSR. Previously the Komi ASSR had no weights and measures branch and was serviced by the Kirov and Archangel branches. N. O. Vezhlivtsev established an inde- pendent branch. As long ago as 1936 he carried out important work in replacing everywhere obsolete instruments and gauges. From the first days of the war Nikotai Osipevich was at the front. In 1942 he was seriously wounded, received the Order of the Red Star and returned to Syktyvkar to take charge once more of the weights and measures branch which he reactivated. N. O. Vezhlivtsev wasrewarded for his work with certificates of honor of the Komi Regional Civil Service Trade Union. In the 84 years of his metrological service N. O. Vezhlivtsev has trained more than one generation of experts. At present, in his capacity as Chief Engineer of a State Inspection Laboratory, he transmits his knowledge and ex- perience to youth, inspiring it with dedication to the metrological service. N. O. Vezhlivtsev has been awarded the badge of "Outstanding Worker in Measurement Techniques," his name has been inscribed on the State Inspection Laboratory's Plaque of Honor and he has been awarded the title of Com- munist Labor Shock Worker. The Presidium of the Komi ASSR Supreme Soviet has awarded N. O. Vezhlivtsev the Certificate of Honor of the Komi ASSR Supreme Soviet.
