A native of San Francisco, Terry has been in radio for quite some time, starting at KFOG in SF, then KSFO and eventually moving to KYUU. At KYUU he became national sales manager then general sales manager and vice president and general manager in 1984. When KYUU was sold he joined Fuller-Jeffrey Broadcasting, the company who has recently purchased KSRO/ KHTT. He serves as general manager for the two stations, headquartered on College Avenue. Fuller & Jeffrey are real people who have had real careers in radio. Thus they understand radio and approach it not just as a business, but as something they love and understand. Their first radio station purchase was a New Hampshire station operating out of a dilapidated trailer. They now own radio stations around the country, including Sacramento, Chico, Modesto, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa. Research conducted by F/J in our area examined "needs" of our community. There are five radio stations in Santa Rosa. KREO was a teen-oriented top-40 format. To help indicate a change had taken place, F/J changed the call letters to "KHTT - The Heat." The target is now people in their 20's (younger & older, too) because of changing tastes in the market. KSRO has remained a talk radio format with the addition of some national shows, less emphasis on strictly local programming. KSRO is competing with the best talk shows in the nation with KGO and KCBS. In fact, the #2 radia station in Santa Risa is KGO, with KCBS ;a close #3. KSRO was simply not strong enought at number 16 to compete without some help. Jim Grady and Merle Ross, two popular local talents still have the a.m. slot between 5-9 on weekdays. At 9-11 a.m. is Rush Limbaugh, a very controversial and very entertaining right-leaning national talk show. Michael Jackson (no, not that Michael Jackson!) is on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local talk show host Larry Chiaroni is from 1-2 p.m., with possible expansion of this show in the future. From 2-4 p.m. is Dr. David Viscott. From 4-7 p.m., Sally Jesse Raphael and from 7-10 p.m., Tom Snyder. The Mystery Theater is for late night listening. Terry explained how the Arbitron rating diary system works to rate radio stations. The results of these findings rate radio stations and help advertisers _ determine where and when to spend their advertising dollars. It is DeVoto's sincere desire that the community will respond to the new ownership with as much feedback as possible. John Jones was reminded of his wife Ardis'birthday. He was not only reminded, hehad to pay $15. for the now-infamous roseand vase.

Loretta Slyh really knows how to travel. She gets real deals - like checking outMaui to see if it's still intact with a littlemarlin fishing off the big island. Twoweeks of such punishment only cost her$20.!

Steve Owles travelled to Boston via Lake

Tahoe. Sounds like he had a real goodtime, complete with wife, mother-in-law,four teenagers and a senile dog. He was letoff easy with a $10. fine for having tosuffer so much.

Vacations, vacations, vacations. JohnJones visited Yellowstone and the GrandTetons. That sounds innocent enough, butnot when you get flown there in a privateplane. He saw some unusual things like acoyote with a yellow spotted tie. On theSnake River he saw five fly fishermenwho caught a big nothing. He put hisroostertail on a hook and caught threecutthroat in one hour. He also caught aGerman shorthair. The trip cost him $15.,the dog cost him $5.

Kent Seegmiller, while not present, nonetheless spoke, asking for 100%attendance. He is willing to put in $100.per month for any month we make it. Let'shurt his pocketbook bad ...

WORDS OFWISDOMPresident Kent Seegmiller left us withsome wisdom for the day —"Ifyou're sureyou're right, you can afford to stay quiet."

Meeting August 10, 1989

Betty Perez, Executive Director ofWomen Against Rape (WAR), explainedow this organization works to pre

vent child abuse.

When invited into a school, the organization sends counselors to trainelementary and high school studentshow to thwart a molester and say noto sexual advances. Betty told ofelementary children who avoided being kidnapped by using techniqueslearned during a 20 minute WAR presentation.

They teach the children that it. isokay to say "no" to sexual advances, how to get away from that person andwhere to go for help. Kids have aright to be "Safe, Strong and Free"which is the rallying cry of elementary children.

It was good to hear someone is taking positive steps to prevent childabuse.

FINE TIMES

Ray^ Gorman placed a very expensivead in the Sonoma Business magazine. Also, President Kent spotted aGorman Designs vendor whilevisiting his favorite ghost town,Jerome, Arizona. This cost Ray$20.00. But, did Kent buy any earrings?

Have you heard—Ponseti & Partnersnew client is Simons & Brecht. Shealmost escaped a fine because shedid such a good job on the bulletinmasthead and new logo for our'" fundraiser known as Westoberfest. Shedidn't need that $5.00 anyway.

The Olsen's have a new addition totheir family. The 800 pound 3 yearold just arrived. Isn't Morgan Marea funny name for a baby. it costSteve only $5.00, which should havebeen increased when Rhoann pointedout that there is no "tt" inPonseti, contrary to her new RotaryMembership card.

John Jones donated $3.00 for helpingLmkenheimer Hebrew grow and expand!

Tom Eakin paid $12.00 for sayingsomething which was quoted in one ofour local papers.

Dave Lorenzen is giving his wife alovely rose for her birthday whichwas graciously donated by the club. The card cost him $15.00.

Kent ignored Nancy Aita's plea to"...be gentle..." as this was herfirst time. Both she and her husband had a birthday last week. Costonly $20.00. Welcome to the clubNancy.

Ms. Ellen Roddick spoke tous about organizing ourthoughts. She explained TheMind Map and The HarvardOutline. They are essentially the same, but, theHarvard Outline looks

prettier. Both methodsstart with a question to beanswered. The Mind Maplooks as cut tree viewed

from above. The question isinserted in the trunk. She

used the example "What do Ido?" to show how both

systems work. Each branchis identified with a keyword or phrase. Avoidsentences as, at this point;they just get in the way.Additional branches aredrawn to and labeled with

related topics. Jim Knauffused his to describe how heplays golf and it worked. He explained it very well.

Ms. Roddick has a book fullof ideas or methods that

make writing easier. If yousee an improvement in thebulletin you will know theywork.

RECOGNITION

Howard (Buster) Daulton wasselected for Leadership SantaRosa. Seems Nancy couldn'twait and told President Kentabout it in front of everyone.Nancy that's brave for someonewho claims to be broke, butBuster wasn't and paid $15.Con-gradulations Howard. TomEakin of Vac-u-Dry wasrecognized twice; once for hisbosses continual denials andagain for being anything butdry. More about that later,—the first offense cost him $3.Eric Van Cleave who sits onthe Board of Directors of the"proposed" Windsor OaksNational Bank paid very littleconsidering the amount of freepublicity he is getting. Thecost $15. Seems he paid atthe Windsor Rotary also.President Kent asked Mr. JeffSmith a member of the WindsorClub to take a message to hispresident, "Don't mess withus," sung to the tune, "Goahead, make my day." JackEddinger paid $2. for drivinghis hot rod in public. It is a1929 Yellow Ford pick up whichhe readily admits is all Chevyexcept the body. Allan Richreceived the complimentaryrose for his wife, after heand Kent had a long discussionas to what day her birthdaywas. Kent placed the fine at$15 but Allan's raised it to$20 in honor of his childsbirthday, which is also thiscoming week.

Nancy Aita created a newOxymoran when she used thewords Legimate and Dolinsek inthe same sentence, during hercraft talk. It cost her $5.And last, the matter Ipromised to talk more about,The Four Horsemen.—Jim Hakel,Tom Eakin, Gary Doolittle andJohn Dolinsek attended at the

fair to enjoy an afternoon atthe races. I cannot divulgeany gory details as silencewas purchased for $5. each.

You too can overcome fear byknowing your audience, theroom, and learning to benatural. The last is most

important as 7% of one'smessage is received as words;38% by voice inflection and55% by body gestures. Somebody gestures are more fun towatch than others, so; we haveto make ours interesting.

Everyone is afraid of being infront of an audience includingsuch amateurs as Bob Hope,Willard Scott and GloriaSteinum. They overcame theirfear as we all can. Theaudience is usually pullingfor the speaker becauseeveryone likes to see someoneelse succeed. Also, they areglad someone else is speakingand not them.

To learn more about publicspeaking, Ms. Paulsonrecommends the followingbooks: "Swim With Sharks andStay Alive" (I missed the

author's name) and "You AreThe Message" by Roger Ais.She claims these are the bestbooks on public speaking, atleast until hers comes out.

MONEY IS GROWING IN

THE SONOMA HILLS

Greg Nilsen, owner of WineCountry Cuisine told us howsmall, independent farmers aremaking a good living growingvegetables in Sonoma County. He told us how a little land, some know how, and a small

investment can yield harvestsof great profits.

Sonoma County is famous forquality produce. After WorldWar II local farm output declined with the rise in che

mical farming. Local farmers

could not compete with thosein the San Joaquin Valley whocan use chemicals efficientlyto increase production dramatically. The desire forquality creates markets for"home grown", hand raised, often organic, vegetables.

Our climate and soils combineto intensify the flavors offruits and vegetables. Everyone knows about the finegrapes and wines of SonomaCounty. Locally grown letjtuce, tomatoes and other yeg

etables are recognized worldwide for being the finest onecan buy. Here the word finestmeans expensive. Wine CountryCuisine packages and sellsthis fine produce throughoutthe United States. i
