increased22.9and21.7percent(respectively)thisyearasaresultof2013redesigns.
“Notallredesignsareperforminguptopar,”saidGutierrez.“ThenewChevroletMalibureceivedalukewarmreceptionlastyearandsalesaredown18.4percentin2013.Inresponse,GMislaunchingarefreshforthe2014modelyear,hopingtoregainsomeofitslostmarketshare.”
• TheMAZDA6haspostedslowsalesinmostof2013,down25.6percent.However,salesinMaywere34.5percentabovetheAprilnumbers.Theslowfirstquarterlikelywasduetoconsumerswaitingforthe2014redesign,whichbecameavailableinApril.

• Intotal,99,135unitsinthePriusfamilyhavebeensoldin2013.However,thisfigureisstilldown7.8percentfromlastyear.Thiscanbestronglyattributedtolowerfuelcosts,whichare10centscheaperonaveragein2013.
“ThePriusalsohasfacedcompetitionfromelectricvehicles,whichhaverelieduponaggressiveleaseoffersinrecentmonths,”saidGutierrez.“Forexample,theNissanLEAFcanbehadfor$199amonthfor36monthswithonly$1,999down,makingitatrulycompellingofferingforthoseseekingtoreducefuelexpenses.”
