EDITORIAL

One year ago we published the first edition of our English newspaper, THE LION. As you can imagine, it was a great success, so here we are again to summarize some of the activities carried out in English during this academic year. Ready? Steady? Read!

In the first term we celebrated a spooky and fun Halloween together with the first project in Primary, Listen to Your HeART in which we learnt very popular songs in English. The Jolly Phonics method continued its success in Preschool with its catchy tunes. Can you sing the lyrics of the hit The snake is in the grass or I like to hop hop hop up and down?

The second term arrived after Christmas. Another project in Primary Let’s go to the Farm and the first projects in Preschool Africa, Babies and Animals in Danger showed the importance of working in English when teaching content. We cannot forget St Patrick’s Day, leprechauns and shamrocks were all over the school. Besides, the students in 1ESO and 2ESO attended a play in English, Sleepy Hollow. The story was a bit creepy but they enjoyed the play.

The third term has been short but really busy! After the celebration of Easter we held our first English Week. We chose England, London in particular. The London Tube with its stations was the excuse to learn lots of interesting things related to English culture: food,

monuments, music…and of course, Harry Potter! The book fair also took place during the English Week. In these pages you will find the books used in the storytelling sessions in Preschool and Primary. On the other hand, the students in 1ESO and 2ESO have enrolled a project consisting of having Dutch pen friends who study Spanish. The kids in 1ESO wanted to use their English too, so they are sending some videos in which they explain life at our school.

And last but not least, we had two overseas visits. Zoe, the Australian language assistant

from last year visited her former students, which was a nice surprise. We also had a special guest in 1ESO B. Alex, David López’s cousin from Houston came to class. He prepared a great presentation about his life in the USA and after that we played Kahoot! We would like to thank him and his family for their kindness and willingness. He is more than welcome to come back.

THE LION 3 BAJO ARAGÓN (MARIANISTAS) SCHOOL

Last week we celebrated our very first English Week ever!

From now on, every year we will be learning about different countries where English is spoken around the world. Obviously, this first year we have started with England; particularly London.

Every classroom of Preschool became an

underground station and at each one of them we were learning different aspects about English culture.

We decorated and ate cupcakes at Notting Hill, we danced with the best English music at Camden Town, and we enjoyed a picnic day at Hyde Park (until, of course, it started to rain!).

Also we learnt about London monuments and means of transport at Buckingham Palace and Westminster; and we had a great time being told some stories in English at King’s Cross.

It was an amazing week and we can’t wait for next school year to find out which English speaking country we will get to know!


We learnt about animals in High Park in Primary 5, we bought food in Notting Hill in Primary 2 and in Primary 1 we listened to some important bands walking around Camden Town. Then, in Primary 4 we got to learn about the Queen

because at Buckingham Palace Station. In Primary 3 we visited some popular monuments in London. And in Primary 6 we entered Harry Potter’s world at King Cross Station. Do you remember Platform 9 ¾? ;)


5th GRADE “ENGLISH DAY” STATION

During the English Day, our London Tube Station was “Hyde Park”.

We had to think about some activity refering to this station and finally, the topic was “Animals” because in High Park there are lots of them.

We selected some of the most common or typical animals in the United Kingdom.

In our activity; children had to find, select and clasify the main characteristics of the animals.

First, by its “Animal Kingdom” (fish, mammal, reptile, amphibian, insect or bird). Then by its reproduction sistem (oviparous or viviparous) and finally by their skin (fur, feathers, scales, moist skin) and nutrition (carnivore, omnivore or herbibore)

We and our visitors had so much fun!!!!!


Children in Infants celebrated

Easter in a really fun way. We

made rabbit puppets, Easter

baskets, and Easter eggs with

potatoes. We met a rabbit called

Tambor. We could touch it and

we learnt some things about

him. Also, we played a treasure

hunt game around the building

to find an Easter treasure. We

found Easter eggs which were

delicious!

The students in 1º and 2º ESO have received letters from students in Holland. They have told us about their

routines, subjects, families and hobbies. We have written a letter in Spanish and prepare some videos in English.

Some students in 4º ESO imagined how Goya and Van Gogh would interact in social networks such

as Instagram if they were alive in 2017. Wouldn’t it be amazing?


LA GALLINITA CIEGA

This is a painting by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. He was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Zaragoza. He painted a lot of Romantic paintings. This masterpiece is called La Gallinita Ciega. It was painted in 1789. The painting was made with oil colours. Now, it is in the Prado Museum, in Madrid.

In the middle of the picture there is a group of people who are playing a game and dancing in a circle. In the middle of the circle there’s a woman that is catching people with a wood spoon but her eyes are covered. The other people are trying to avoid her while they are laughing and dancing.

On the right, there’s a tree and on the left you can see a forest and mountains. On the top there is a light sky with a lot of clouds. In the background you can see a beautiful blue lake and mountains. In the bottom right-hand corner there are two stones.

The women are wearing colourful dresses and some women are wearing hats with feathers which was the way they dress in that time. The women are also wearing high-heel shoes. The men are wearing special suits from Goya’s time. All the clothes are elegant and old-fashioned for our time.

I chose this painting because I like Goya and it’s a realistic painting. When I was a child I played this game and for that reason I decided to work on this painting.

ARTS OF THE WEST

This is a painting by the American painter Thomas Hart Benton. It's called Arts of the West, because it's based on the North American west.

In the bottom of the picture there're three men playing cards, on the left another three are playing some instruments for people that are in the background of the picture. On the right they are trying to tame some wild horses and in the very centre of the painting you can see two men are loading and shooting guns.

The country musicians are playing the violin, the guitar, and the last one is singing. All of them are wearing blue dungarees, and one of them is wearing a cowboy hat.

We can see two horses, one has white fur, and the other one has brown fur. The two men who are playing cards, are very ugly, one of them is wearing a cowboy hat and is dressed in red. The other one is dressing a very expensive suit in black and white and he has blond hair.

The people who are dancing in the party are wearing a elegant clothes, and are having fun

The two men in the middle are twice shooting their guns, and reloading gun indeed, the ones who is reloading is in yellow and the other one is wearing blue trousers and a vest with pink and a cowboy hat, he is winking his eye for being more accurate.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't really like Art. Art is boring for me, but I completely agree that this and all the paintings, from my point of view are really beautiful. I definitely think that this painting is a Master Piece. It is widely known in the United States. To sum up, is a really beautiful painting, but I can't appreciate it at all. I will try to improve my knowledge about art and i will possibly appreciate it.

Remember Zoe?

She was the school’s language assistant last year. She is from Australia and she taught us lots of interesting things about her country.

She spent a weekend in Zaragoza before Easter holidays and she came to visit us at school.

She’s living in Brussels now, although she told us that she misses Zaragoza and life in Spain.


4th GRADE - LAB

This school year the bilingualism reached to a new grade and with it three new subjects. Drama, Arts and LAB.

Once a week, we took our pencilcase, leave the class and go to a real laboratory with tons of amazing objects like test tubes, minerales, machines, chemical substances…

In LAB we have worked as a real scientist. First, we do an experiment with the topic and then we take notes of the results. Some of them were surprisingly amazing!!

The contents were always related with the subject of “Ciencias Naturales” or “Ciencias Sociales”.

We have seen lots of topics like planets, the senses, electricity, weather, plants, discoveries of the prehistoric age, minerals…. we even did a robotic hand with its tendons and joints!!

It has been and incredible scientific year!!!
