One of the real pleasures of coaching is seeing a team (and individual players) improve and put into practice what we have been focusing on at training. So even though we didn’t come away with the win against Steel, Kiri, Deb and I were so very pleased with the improvement shown on Sunday night – there was some fabulous netball played, and the crowd seemed to really appreciate it. We could certainly hear you, which was awesome!! It was just disappointing that we ran out of steam in that last quarter, and when we were unable to continue the relentless defensive pressure that was a hallmark of the earlier stages of the game – Steel had the ability to score really quickly. Bugger! We obviously had a much better start to the match which made a real difference for us. I like to think that my threats about making the Mystics team play a 30 minute “mock game” on the back court before warm up, so we could get the gremlins out … actually made a difference! However I think in reality it was the very special opportunity the players (and management) were given to walk out on court with our mothers/grandmothers/daughters/mother figures) that really gave us a very special start to the match. (Thanks to Jill, Chris, Tash and co for making this happen ) While the mums were waiting with us in the corridor for call on – there was such a feeling of nervous excitement from us all. It was really lovely to be able to acknowledge the people who support us through thick and thin. My mother took the “oldest and longest netball fan” award that’s for sure. Dorothy Fathers is 82 years young, she started out coaching me in the 4th Form at Paeroa College (quite a few years ago haha), then continued to be an international netball umpire before becoming a supporter of ALL of the teams I have played in or coached over many years. She certainly deserves a medal!! While she would absolutely love us to put more wins on the board (wouldn’t we all!), she takes equal delight from seeing great attacking play, tenacious defence and continuous improvement, and she drives herself up from Paeroa for each of our home games because she thinks our Mystics girls are just great! Each of the girls is blessed with people who love, care and support them – and you certainly need this when the going gets tough. We thank all our fans for also continuing to be amazing support to us as well. Hang in there!! Ruth

Mystics Nation - Armchair Army Q & A 3

Issue No.3 May 2013 www.northernmystics.co.nz

Our very own “Armchair Army” Mystics/Netball fans sharing their thoughts and opinions on recent topics

Contributions from J.A (AK-NZ) , J.K (Cairns-Aus), S.B (AK-NZ) ,

D.B (P/North-NZ), S.M (AK-NZ)

Great seeing new young talent within the NZ Franchises getting court time this season, who in particular is a “One to Watch , and why?

“Elisapeta Toeava – she has great vision and isn't afraid to give the ball, she is growing with every game she plays” D.B “Its been great to watch Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick out on court again, after making a questionable decision to stay at Magic last year. She has been picking up some brilliant intercepts and doing lovely work” J.A “ Sophia Fenwick – She seems almost fearless at the moment, shooting well , combining well with Harten and learning how to create space better with every outing. Elisapeta Toeava also really impresses me at this stage” S.B “Jess Bourke (Mystics) she is a good tight defender and reads the ball and game well, Zoe Walker (Tactix), she has great elevation and another fearless defender” J.K” “Toeava, she makes herself available and always looks to the circle to feed, and is a good feeder. Some coaching and experience, she will be another Leota; Walker (Tactix) she just needs to be more definite in her moves, but has huge potential” S.M So, not quite the season we had hoped for, so Armchair Army Coaches – what would you be doing/saying to your team at this point?

“Team Building. I think the team have to come back to the basics. Shorter, sharper movements through court. Support is key for the young team mates, encourage them to strive for better. Senior members should be taking charge of their respective thirds, lead by example – GO THE MYSTICS! J.K “Treasure possession, too many silly passes and balls that didn’t need to be forced. They showed us in the Pulse game that they have the talent and ability, maybe Ruth needs to put on her scary face “ J.A “Play Cullen in WD, have more talk out on the court, have confidence in what you are doing” D.B “Change of attitude is needed ladies, Ruth can only do so much, she is the best coach the ferns have ever had, so her credentials are there, players need to want to learn from her” S.B

“Do your own job and work as a team, not individuals. Let the ball go when the option is open. Go for the ball not the player so as not to give the umpire the option of a penalty, and ENJOY the game, your fans always support you” S.M At this point of the ANZ Championship, which players are standing out as Silver Fern contenders?

“Irene,Cat,Maria, Jodi, Laura, Liana, Millie,Philippa Finch, Casey, Leana, Katrina, Kayla” S.B “Irene,Maria,Cat, Ngaupu, Brown, Langman, Grace, Leota, Henry, Toeava, Grant, Kopua, De Bruin, Cullen” S.M “ Van Dyk ,Tutaia,Latu, Brown, Langman, Leota, Lees, G.Rasmussen, Kopua, de Bruin, Grant, Cullen” D.B “Irene, Cat , Jodi, Maria, Liana,Grace, Camilla, Kayla, Casey, Leana, Katrina” J.A “Tutaia, Latu, IVD,Brown, Langman, Cullen, Shadrock, Lees, de Bruin, Kopua, Grant, Selby-Rickit. Extended Squad – Grace Rasmussen, Fenwick,Zoe Walker and Bailey Mes” J.K Fast 5 – Returning Fast Fern champions, who

would you like to see in the team for this year? “Time to mix it up – I would pick the best dancers – Cat, Julianna, Maria, Ellen Halpenny, Grace, Kayla, Laura, Sulu, Katrina, Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit” J.A “Brown, Tutaia, Latu,G Rasmussen,Francois, Finch,Selby-Rickit, Tone-Fitzpatrick, Walker” D.B “Phillips, Finch, Langman,Latu,Tutaia, Fenwick,de Bruin,Grant, Cullen, Kopua” S.B “ Mes, Cat, Maria, Waitapu, Grace, Langman,Toeava, Shadrock, Grant, Cullen, Tone-Fitzpatrick, Zoe Walker” S.M “Latu,Tutaia, Cullen, Grant, Selby-Rickit, Langman, Thompson, Bourke, Kopua,Fenwick,Mes” J.K If you have any questions or topics you would like to ask our resident Armchair Army - email

Coaching Blog - Debbie Fuller

Debbie Fuller - Blog Shares her tips and new ideas in the world of coaching.

Someone asked me recently - how do you evaluate your performance as a coach? Results, are usually what you are judged on, however the rate of improvement in individuals and the team is by far more meaningful. In the heat of high performance netball any evaluation is hugely complex. There are many layers that the coach engages in and rating your performance in these areas is more beneficial that an outright win loss ratio. I also think it is important to identify specifics to build up your craft. In addition timing of the evaluation is important and I would recommend doing it 3 times or more throughout the season, preseason, mid and end of season. I thumbed through some information I have on coach evaluation and found a basic format which seemed quite helpful. I would not only get athletes to carry out the evaluation but also your management staff. I have also used close friends who I have coached against, and if you have a good relationship with them, ask them to complete as much as they can through observations as it is interesting and helpful to note how the opposition plan to coach against you. All evaluation contributes to increased self-awareness and improvement, something we need to keep working on as we ask of our athletes to do so too. Coach Evaluation Athletes rate their coach(es) on each of the items on a 7-point scale ranging from 1 (never) to 7 (always). The seven factors are as follows: 1. Physical Training and Planning (coachʼs involvement in the athletes physical training and planning for

training and competition) 2. Goal Setting (assessing the coachʼs involvement in the identification, development, and monitoring of the

athletes goals) 3. Mental Preparation (focusing on how the coach helps the athlete to perform under pressure, stay focused,

and be confident) 4. Technical Skills (feedback, demonstration, and cues) 5. Personal Rapport (assessing the approachability, availability, and understanding of the coach) 6. Negative Personal Rapport (examining the coachʼs use of negative techniques such as fear and yelling) 7. Competition Strategies (focusing on the coach's interaction with the athlete in competition). 6 Keeping up with the Corlettos

Julie , Darryl, Jack and Molly (aka Skip, Daz and the kids) A quick catch up with the Corletto clan.

Firstly congratulations Darryl on another outstanding season with the Sky City Breakers, now that the season is over what keeps you busy? “Thank you it was a great season. We have such a great team. The finals series was amazing to play in and to win the final in Perth in front of 14.000 fans was something I will never forget! In the off season I am already back into training and keeping fit, I’m also studying a degree at Massey University and completing 3 papers this semester. I’m helping Dillon Boucher out, coaching a school basketball team and that’s really enjoyable, I love coaching. Also Julie has her netball clinics coming up and she has me working for her” If you weren’t superstars in your chosen sports – are there any other sports that would love to play at a high level? DAZZ - “I would have been playing AFL (Aussie Rules) football back home. I had to make a choice at the age of 17 it was either Basketball or Football. I also like to play Golf” JULZ – “I probably would have stuck to Athletics. I also had to choose between Netball and Athletics. I love Netball because I love the team aspect and training hard alongside your teammates, then celebrating success together. If I could choose another sport , I’d love to be a Tennis Player, although I’m not so great at it “ What are your top three favourite places/things you love about NZ? DAZZ - “I love living near the beach, all the cafes and of course the lovely people who live here” JULZ – “Living with my husband and our kids (Jack our golden retriever, and Molly our cat) , living on the North Shore and being able to walk to the beach, Allpress coffee and the great cafes” What do miss the most about not living in Australia” DAZZ and JULZ “We really miss our family and friends. Luckily we have Skype so can stay in touch, and we constantly get photos sent of our nieces and nephews and that makes us happy as they seem to growing up so quickly. We have 5 nieces/nephews back home and we miss them a lot” Both being elite athlete's, is there any “friendly” rivalry? DAZZ - “There is a lot of rivalry between us in everything we do, it keeps us both competitive and working hard. The only thing Julz beats me at is Sing Star on the play station, but she “only just ” beats me , She is hopeless at Mario Cart” JULZ – “Yes we are very competitive. We always try to beat or out do each other…. Everything seems to be a competition. Dazz thinks he wins everything…. He likes to think so anyway …ha ha “ There has been recent comments made that the ANZ Championship should drop a NZ team, making it a nine team league – what are your thoughts on this? DAZZ - “More teams, more players, more jobs, more opportunities for young girls to live their dream. Netballers are great role models for young girls. They deserve every chance to play at an elite level, so I would say lets bring in more teams – I love Netball that much!” JULZ – “I would love to see more teams in the competition, especially in Australia. Considering Aussie has approx. 18+mill more people than in NZ it seems silly only having 5 Aussie teams also. There is so much talent and only limited opportunities for girls to gain a spot in an ANZ team. More teams, more games and greater opportunities for young aspiring Netballers”
