MYP Language B – Standard 3 Spanish Syllabus for Semester 1 & 2 / 2011-2012 Instructor Profesora Rebeca Choi Times / Location Room 400 Resources Textbook, Workbook, Laptop, etc. E-mail [email protected] (for parent-teacher appointments only) [email protected] (for students) Course Description This MYP Language course aims to enable students to effectively use language as a means for communication, provide a base for further study, enable students to understand the nature of language and the process of language learning, and to promote awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from other cultures. Oral communication (message and interaction, language), written communication (message and organization, language) and reading comprehension will be assessed in this course. This course is designed to enable learners that have growing skills communicating in Spanish to continue to build upon their learning in all four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will demonstrate comprehension of information and attitudes expressed from spoken and written texts. Class work, group work, pair work and individual work will all be a part of the classroom learning format. A broad range of vocabulary will be taught. Grammar and increasingly complex conversation skills will be taught throughout the course. Students will also be exposed to Hispanic customs to encourage an awareness and understanding of perspectives of Hispanic people and their culture. This course is intended to foster curiosity and a lifelong interest in language learning. Formative assessments will be used by the student and teacher as on-going evidence. Formative assessments may include (but are not limited to) daily work, homework, quizzes, in-class observation, interviews, etc). Summative assessments will be used as a summary of the students achievement in a particular area. Summative assessments may include (but are not limited to) tests, projects, presentations, and essays. Summative Assessment dates will be posted on the GSIS Middle School Assessment Hub. Progress reports will be issued that include both formative and summative assessment evidences. Grades on student report cards will be primarily based on summative assessments.

Academic progress will be updated regularly on Powerschool. Oral Communication Criterion A: Message and Interaction maximum 8 Criterion B: Language maximum 8 Writing Criterion C: Message and Organization maximum 8 Criterion D: Language maximum 8 Reading Criterion E: Reading Comprehension maximum 8 (x2 for the final grade = 16) In alignment with the IB philosophy, students will be assessed holistically and the use of a rubric will be used to evaluate a student’s performance on a given task.

Policies / Suggestions for

Success

Policies: o Students will communicate entirely in Spanish for the duration of each class period

unless given permission to briefly speak in English. It is imperative that students communicate with the teacher if at any time they feel concerned about the material being covered and/or the pace of the class. Students are encouraged to ask questions for clarification.

o Be prepared and in your seat in class when the bell rings. o No food, drink (except water), or gum will be allowed in the classroom. o No IPods, cell phones, or other electronics allowed during class except laptops

when given prior permission for use in classroom activities. o Turn in all homework on time and completed to the best of your ability. o BE RESPECTFUL to everyone and everything in the classroom.

Suggestions for Success:

o Practice Spanish by actively participating in class activities. o Do your homework and the extra practice worksheets that will be available to you

online. o Pick a buddy to communicate with in Spanish. o Frequently use the new vocabulary in an oral or written way to remember them.
