WALL ART WAS A STRESS BUSTER FOR SOME PARTICIPANTS IN THIS COMMUNITY EFFORT

On Saturday, September 14, Cityworks con-ducted a community wall art event at Infinity Park, San Thome, an inclusive park for children with and without disabilities.

Residents of the com-munity, children with special needs and their parents, and volunteers armed with brushes, en-thusiastically painted the outlines drawn on a wall by an artist.

One parent said, “It was such a stress-buster. I was so immersed in painting, I didn’t even have to worry about keeping an eye on Sanjay (son).”

Another said, “I have never painted before. Once I started I didn’t want to stop.” The wall art has made the park a bit more colourful now. This park is off San Thome High Road, near Registration Office and local Amma Unavagam.- Reported by Sneha Raghuram / Vidya Mandir student

US FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICER WAS GUEST AT DANCE RECITAL THEMED ON MANY WAYS OF BHAKTI

Sydney Skov is a Foreign Service Officer at the US Consulate office in Chennai. She is also a pas-sionate dancer, having learnt dance when she was just four. Dance has been part of her life, making time after her mainline work to learn dance and that has happened to her in Kolkata and now in Chennai.

In the city, she is learning the basics of Bhara-tanatyam from dancer Priya Murle, a senior sishya of Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy based in Alwarpet.

On Saturday, September 21, Sydney was a special guest at the 51st performance of Priya Murle’s dance production titled ‘Panchaturam; breaking the bonds’.

This production focuses on the many different ways of bhakti, interweaving katha and music with classical dance, performed by Priya and four sishyas and anchored by the effervescent Sa-sirekha.

The recital was held at Rasika Ranjani Sabha, Mylapore.

Sydney has been director of the Free Body Project which works at the intersection of dance and health and social justice.

About 40 residents of R. K. Na-gar, Mandaveli got together a few weeks ago to paint the walls of the park in their neighbourhood.

K. L. Bala, a resident of Thiru-veedi Amman Koil Street who has been actively involved in several community initiatives for a few years now, says, “The OSR Park at R. K. Nagar was inaugurated about a year ago. Several residents have been using this park since then but

we wanted to beautify the park by painting the walls and by removing the garbage bin outside it. Four walls inside the park and the wall which faces R. K. Nagar 2nd Main Road were painted in association with Karpam Korpom-SAPS”.

“We hope to take over the maintenance of the park soon”, he adds. For details contact Bala at 9840441803.

The kolu dolls bazaar of Mylapore is now choc-a-bloc with shoppers who are keen to grab a deal and go home with a set of dolls they want for this Navarathri’s kolu.

Scores of shoppers fill the jam-packed North Mada Street to do their last-minute festival shopping.

Hawkers have added more stocks of the dolls at the 50-plus stalls on North and a part of East Mada Street.

Dolls from Kanchipuram, Panruti, Cuddalore, Vellore, Pondicherry, and Kosapet are on sale. Some have arrived from Kolkata and other North Indian states.

Apart from the regular Dasava-tharam and Kalyanam set, dolls of the lord Athi Vardar, Nava Narasimhar (nine forms of Narasimhar similar to idols at Andhra Pradesh’s Ahobilam), Muperumdevigal (a doll that depicts the three goddesses - Saraswathi,

Lakshmi, and Parvathi in one form) and those of terracotta materials are in demand.

All of them are available at most of the shops; But dolls of Athi Vara-dar have sold out. Hawkers say fresh pieces will arrive in the coming days.

Jayaraj’ s shop in front of Radha Gold Jewellers in North Mada Street is different. This hawker, who says his family has been in this business for 40 years, has a number of new dolls.

“Papier-mache dolls of lord Hariharan, Badrachala Raman, Dwaraka Krishna, and Vinayakar Vathiyam (a set of lord Vinayaka dolls playing different musical instruments) are new here,” points out Shrimati a shopper from K. K. Nagar who was here on Thursday.

The Nava Narasimhar set is priced at Rs 2200 and that of Muperumdevi-gal is priced at Rs 1800 at his shop. (Rates of these dolls vary at different stalls).

De-silting of storm water drains is on:is it happening in your area? By Our Staff Reporter

To avoid flooding during the rains, de-silt-ing of storm water drains (SWDs) is going on at a steady pace in many parts of Mylapore.

The past few days, Chennai Corporation’s

contract workers are desilting drains on Durgabai Deshmukh Road ( alongside the hospital and MGR-Janaki College), Dr. Ranga Road and in East Abhiramapuram First Street besides other parts of the neighbourhood.

The muck removed is collected and stored in bags. Once the water drains off from it, workers say it will be taken away in garbage collection vans.

Said a worker, “We have been asked to finish the de-silting work before the north-east monsoon sets in.”

If your area’s drains are full of muck / debris, you may want to call the area engineer and alert him/her. Or lodge a plaint on the Namma Chennai App of Chennai Corporation.

A piece of high-value property located off San Thome High Road which originally fell under the management of Sri Payandiamman Temple, Nadukuppam in Triplicane was secured by the state’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department amidst some drama on Wednesday afternoon.

Valued at about Rs.8 crores, this property, alongside where the Foreshore Estate arch used to stand was given on lease. HR&CE officials said the lease expired some 8 years ago but the family which leased this property had taken the issue to court.

The family lost the case and the state depart-ment quickly secured it with the help of a large number of policemen and women.

The occupants of four shops including the popular Tamil Nadu Bakery and a residence had to vacate the premises and move out goods even as officials sealed the properties, pasted notices on each door and completed this operation even as noontime traffic slowed down to take in the drama.

Every time it rains, Abhiramapuram First Street gets flooded. And this sickens residents. They are frustrated because a series of complaints to the local Chennai Corpora-tion office has not evoked a response that solves the issue.

Says resident Giridharan Kesavan, “Only a part of this street has a stormwater drain. And that is a 6-inch wide PVC pipe. That pipe’s section was damaged by workers of a private ISP (Internet Service Provider) erected a utility pole here.” This pipe, he says, is connected to the stormwater drain at Dr. Ranga Road, from where the water is led to the Buckingham Canal.

“Every time it rains, besides flooding, it becomes danger-ous for the residents and motorists due to the presence of a large number of potholes here,” he says.

Mylapore Times asked Arul Maran, AE of ward 123 why the problem has not been addressed. He says, “The entire stretch of Abhiramapuram First Street does not require a drain. There are seven inlets to the stormwater drain spread across 35m of this road. If those inlets and the drains on Dr. Ranga Road are desilted water will not stagnate.”

The inlets though are filled with muck, some are dam-aged and have been buried under the road. The drains on Dr. Ranga Road are yet to be desilted. Says the AE, “As the

road is in a bad condition, there is a proposal to relay it in a few months. During that time, we will reconstruct drains. Meanwhile, to avoid flooding, we will de-silt and repair the inlets and make them functional.”

He says that he will also try to con-struct a recharge well here. Now, it is for residents to pursue Arul Maran’s plans.

It isn’t enough to have filters and soak pits on streets and roads to filter water before it runs into water drains. They need to be serviced.

Over time, muck, plastic and garden waste collects on the filters and this negates its function.

This is what happened in Jeth Nagar last week when it rained and water stagnated on the streets here. The blocked filters only added to the rising water levels.

It is the job of Chennai Corporation to inspect its utilities. People can also do this - a mere walk around and some physical work can set things right to tap water in public spaces.

THIS RESIDENT SAVED4000 lts OF WATER BY RWH

Reporting, highlighting and encouraging Rain Water Har-vesting is a campaign undertak-en by Mylapore Times to mark its silver jubilee. You may share news on recent private / public efforts to tap rainwater, on ideas you have implemented, on streets that need recharge wells, etc. Call us at 24660269. Or mail to - [email protected]

By Preeti Srivatsan

Manjula Xavier, a resident of a 2000 sq. ft. inde-pendent home at 10th Cross Street, Mandavelipakkam, set up her rain water harvesting (RWH) system about a month ago. She says the recent rains has helped her harvest more than 4000 litres of water.

She says, “A few months ago, since the heat was too much, we set up an open shed like structure with slanting roofs on our terrace. The water that dripped down from the shed was collected in buckets and used. We then decided to set up a RWH system as we collected almost 8 to 10 buckets of water whenever it rained”.

This is how the system works. Pipes from the roof are connected to the drain pipe that was already in place here and a valve was fixed. When it rains, the residents allow the first shower to get into the earth. After that, they divert the rain to a filtration tank which is filled with gravel, sand and red bricks. From there, the filtered water enters the sump.

Manjula says the water that enters the sump is so pure and free of chemicals that she uses it for cooking and drinking. “We spent about Rs. 15000 to set up the whole system which includes the permanent filtration tank on the ground floor. If setting up a permanent filtration tank is not possible, a readymade filter that is available at Amazon.com for Rs. 6000 can also be used”.

THIS GROUP HAS REVIVED OPEN WELL AND BENEFITTED MUCHBy Dheepti O. J

The recent steady rain was good enough to recharge the well in the campus of Murali Anand Apartment in Mandaveli.

This has happened after residents modified their Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) structure. They said they must have saved 7000 litres of water. Besides recharging the groundwa-ter, the residents are also replenishing the 70-year-old well in their premises. A few weeks ago, 12 families at this complex pooled Rs 30,000 for this modifica-tion. Earlier, this complex in Raja Street Exten-sion had two, 10ft deep recharge wells. “But we realised that it was not

enough to tap all the water that accumulat-ed during rainfall. So, we connected them to our well,” says N. Ravichandran, a long-time resident. In addition, five PVC pipes have been laid to lead the rainwater from the rooftop to the well. Says Uma Krishnan, sec-retary of the local association, “In addition to saving a large amount of water, we could also revive the well where the water that had turned salty. Though the well has never gone dry, the water had become salty during the April/May, this year when the water crisis was at its peak,” says Uma.

Later, on the suggestion of Ravichan-dran, the team approached Sekar Raghavan of Rain Centre in Adyar. “He advised us to construct a filter chamber with sand, pebbles and a mesh to filter the rainwater before it flows into the well,” she says

The residents say its construction made a huge difference to the water quality.

We, the residents of 6th Trust Cross Street, Kamakshi Apartments, Mandavelippakkam, Chennai-28 are facing a seri-ous civic problem. Curb sound amplification at events in Nageswara Rao Park

A large number of people of various ages use Nageswara Rao Park for their daily walks, physical exercises and meet ups. At times, cultural activities also are conducted.

On September 8, a music concert was organised to cel-ebrate Chennai’s culture. While the purpose of the programme is laudable, the high amplification disturbed people around. Just after the music concert, another programme was organised to commemorate the great patriot VOC. Sound amplification system was also used for this event.

Groups of young men and women use the park to practice dance moves. They also use music system loudly. I request the civic authorities not to permit any programmes that use sound amplification here.

n Congratulations to Mylapore Times on the completion of 25 years. I have been a reader right from the early years of the newspaper.

As a reader, I have found great editorial integrity with an unbiased coverage of the local events. While it may have been tempt-ing for a community newspaper, one that is circulated free, to increase the percentage of adverts, especially after the initial success, it is commendable that you have continued to focus on strong local news content.

There have been times when prospective tenants have signed up flats by 8 a.m. on Saturday based on the classifieds in this newspaper, an indication of the eagerness

with which they await the newspaper early on Saturday morning. Personally, your editorials are a stand out. While some are hard-hitting, they also make suggestions to people at the top. The ‘open letter’ last week to Police and Chennai Corporation commissioners is an example.

- Prabhu, Abiramapuram

n Congratulations to Mylapore Times team for completing 25 years of dedicated service. My family eagerly awaits for every issue of MT every weekend - it gives a ‘clear picture’ of the happenings in and around Mylapore.

‘Illegal’ parking in residential areas off Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai

Lots of vehicles are parked during the office hours (10 a.m till 5 p.m) in the residential areas off Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai. Cars, tempo vans, autos and rental vehicles just appear from nowhere during office hours and occupy both sides of the pedestrian space. Unused/damaged cars are also dumped here for ages.

The residents on Rajasekaran Street, Chan-drabagh Avenue and Judge Jumbulingam Street would greatly benefit if commercial spaces that operate on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai and the owners of vehicles parked in local streets do not disturb use these lanes.

Tribute to chartered accountant G. Narayanaswamy

The passing away of the doyen of audit profession, G. Narayanaswamy leaves a void difficult to fill. He was a enlightened person in the profession and always keen to help its members to make their profession socially relevant.

Besides his active associ-ation with several Chambers of commerce and industry in the city, he will be remembered for his key role as the chairman of Rajaji Centre for Public Affairs till his last. The cen-tre periodically held public meetings and discussed issues of public concern - economy and development, electoral reforms, post-budg-et analysis and the like.

On these occasions, it was a delight to watch his manner of conducting the meetings, briefing the proceedings for the audience and his valediction. My condolences to the bereaved members of the family.

Warm words for Mylapore Times 25

Photo: Subha V. DilipA. Dinakaran walked into our office the other day, sat

down and pulled out a long notebook from his bag. The kind of notebook we used to carry to our biology or drawing classes. Unruled. Jet white. Inviting to those of us who loved to draw. And jot down some notes alongside.

This man’s notebook was different. He had jotted down the neighbourhood travels he had made in the 60s. Every time he had walked to a new area in this city, he had first made rough drawings of the main road and the streets that ran off them, named them and plotted some legends too. Below the rough map as it were he had jotted down all that he observed in the area.

This was a fascinating personal document. But it wasn’t a rare one. For many of that generation, and a few of this do keep detailed notes in our diaries. Or special notepads.

This man’s notebook was slowly coming apart: like the fault lines that earthquakes create, the lines were breaking up some pages. He valued it. But now it was time to hand it over to us. Because he had read that Mylapore Times was collecting documents that would go to build an archive of Mylapore of the modern times.

Recently, veteran journalist Kalyan Arun who now teaches at Asian College of Journalism posted a memory of his summer holidays on the Madras Local History Group’s social media page. Holidays spent in Abiramapuram.

This is what he penned -Anyone in this group remembers Abiramapuram 2nd

Street? That’s what it was called before they renamed it C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer Road, before casting away the ‘Iyer’. My first memory is of 1960. Not far from its junction with Mowbray’s Road was Vyjayantimala’s bungalow with its imposing gates. And then vacant land till one reached the junction of Second Street and Dr. Rangachari Road, where you had the house of advocate Adiga ( I don’t remember his first name, for us he was only Adiga mama). Then, there was my maternal grand-father’s house. Our neighbour on the other side, I remember only as cricketer V. V. Kumar’s father-in-law.

Another open stretch of land before you reached Dr. San-jivi’s house. All these on the eastern side of the road. Don’t remember anything about the western side . . .

I have asked Arun to dig into his photo albums and surprise us with any form of photos he may have shot of this area. He doubts he has any but has promised to ask his mother - perhaps a photo shot during a family function at this Abiramapuram house.

In the Mylapore Times archives we have one small, soli-tary black and white photo of a little boy swinging his cricket bat on an open ground ( dry fields) in Abiramapuram, and a solitary house in this frame.

We are working hard to encourage senior Mylaporeans to donate originals or copies of local records - documents and photos - that can build the archives. People are sentimental at first and reluctant later. Sadly, these records are small value to most family members down the line and the files find their way to the waste bin or are sold along with the month’s newspapers.

The archives are not a personal project. We are catalysts. We are taking the initiative. Someone has to do the dirty work: collection of this kind is difficult work, And we want to be at it. Because these records will enrich our social histories that get erased, lost, smudged over time.

As a parallel exercise, we are also collecting stuff of this age - posters, bills, bus tickets, certificates, newsletters, book-lets, wedding and arangetram invitations, souvenir books, brochures and photos. These too will enrich the project.

Last Sunday, after the Mass at the church in Luz, parish priest Fr. Peter Thumma said their newsletter was available. I quickly got a copy of Pragasa Malar. And after a snack at a local, popular eatery, I asked its owner for a copy of their well-designed menu card. Both have gone into our files.

This project will succeed if Mylaporeans contribute, freely. So dig into your trunks and your files and if there are pictures or bills of the note and text books you bought for school at a local store in the 1970s, share them with us.

Descendants of pastor who built St. Thomas English Church pay visit: here from NZ

The 177-year-old CSI St. Thomas English Church at San Thome had special visitors from Warkworth, New Zealand on Sunday, September 22.

Jenni McGlashan (a great-great granddaughter of Rev. Robert Carver, the missionary who built the Church in 1842) and her husband Jim McGlashan vis-ited the church and participated in the Sunday morning worship service. They were warmly welcomed by the parishioners and felicitated.

Robert Carver was a Wesleyan Missionary who came to Madras soon after the death of his young wife Mary Carver in 1824 in Jaffna, Ceylon.

He ministered in this area of Madras and got close to the Europeans and the Indians settled here. He visited England only once, in 1834, when he married Frances Moore (Adams) at St. Giles Church in Oxford. The couple returned to Madras and ministered in San Thome.

Two sons were born to them, but only the eldest – Robert William Ind Carver, born in 1838 – survived. In 1842, Robert Carver was ordained and the church that he built (then known as St. Thomas-by-the-Sea) was consecrated.

He succumbed to sunstroke in 1845 and was buried under the altar of the Church. Frances Moore left for England along with 6-year-old William Ind Carver the same year. From there, they relocated to New Zealand in 1854. Robert William Ind Carver grew up and mar-ried Mary Ann in 1863 and they had 11 children. Their 9th child was Joshua Carver – the maternal grandfather of Jenni McGlashan. Jenni is the daughter of Mavis Carver – Rev. Robert Carver’s great-grand daughter!

The services rendered by Rev. Robert Carver in building this little, white Church on the San Thome shore were fondly remembered by the parishioners on Sunday.

A documentary film tracing the history of the Church, produced during the 175th year celebrations was also screened.- Report by Fabiola Jacob

Work is on at steady pace in the restoration of the heritage church in Luz called Our Lady of Light Church.

The front end of the church, first built in the early 16th century and enlarged later is now covered in a thatched structure to allow the workers to chip away the exterior. A few other civil works are also to be executed on this campus including putting up a new boundary wall that allows better view of the church.

Fr. Peter Thumma, parish priest here says he hopes the restoration will be over before Christmas. Over Rs.200 lakhs will be required to fund this project and a notice

board lists the main costs budgeted for the project and invites donors to the effort.

Meanwhile, a makeshift shamiana erected on the south side of the church serves as the temporary space, altar and all for the daily Masses and Sunday services.

Differently-abled siblings S. Babu and S. Bharathi have not let their handicaps come in the way of making their lives.

They began taking tuitions at their Adam Street house in Mylapore. Now, they are marketing insurance services of companies.

Both were born with extremely short legs - the portions below the knee were strapped to their thighs making it impossi-ble for them to use them to walk.

Unemployment and some lows in life

turned Babu into a small-time business person. Though a graduate, he says he could not secure any employment because of his physical condition. Says Babu, “Some employers rejected me because of my physi-cal condition. At some places I personally encountered some problems. Sometimes I had to climb a flight of steps or the rest room was far away. So I decided to work

from home.”He launched a small

shop but business was dull and so he closed it. That is when his neighbour Muralidharan broached the idea of pro-viding insurance services from home. The duo have had some success and they hope Mylaporeans will call them for their services.

Says Babu, “Cus-tomers can send their policy details for renewal through Whatsapp to us and we will follow it up.”

Babu’s father Srini-vasan is a pillar of strength to them. The duo are joined by their mother for the tuitions for school children.

The siblings can be reached at 9952732223 (Babu), 9941072352( Bharathi)
