According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), forecasters are predicting 13 to 20 named storms of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes, including 3 to 6 major hurricanes within the Atlantic region.

Preparation is one of the keys to alleviating some of the stress involved when storms hit the area. It’s essential to understand the terminology and therefore severity of any oncoming storms, which items are essential for supply kits, the location of installation and local area shelters and also, what to expect if the active duty member in your family is assigned to the Ride-Out Team.

HurriCane COnDitiOns (HurCOn)In addition to information circulated by the local media, the following messages will be posted on the Hurlburt Field electronic message boards. Unless the message reads “Exercise”, these are the actual hurricane conditions in the area. HURCON 5 General Hurricane Season

HURCON 1R Storm hazards have passed but damage may persist. Recovery operations begin. Initially, only emergency responders are released to move about.

Disaster supply KitsPlan for a supply that will sustain your family for three to seven days. Pack it up ahead of time, if possible. If a storm arrives, all the items will be in one place or, if evacuating, items will be ready to load into your vehicle. Commissary Case Lot sales are a great time to stock supply kits and are planned around the hurricane season.

A kit should include non-perishable food, bottled water (one gallon per person per day), a non-electric can opener, first-aid supplies, any prescribed medications, a portable radio with spare batteries, a change of clothes and extra shoes, toiletries/hygiene Items, a flashlight with spare batteries, money in the form of cash, important papers/information, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, inflatable mattresses, diapers and formula, if needed, books, toys and games for children.

Also, ensure your vehicle is fully fueled and ready for any necessary travel.

evaCuatiOn rOutesKnow your evacuation routes and follow signs along the highways. Traffic information will be available through local radio stations (1050AM, 1260AM, 100.5FM, 99.5FM).

East/West: I-10, North/South: Hwy 87, I-65, I-55

HurriCane riDe-Out teamA multi-function team (approximately 300 personnel) provides core capability to prepare for, ride out, and recover from a significant storm event. The Ride-Out Team is necessary to ensure continuity of operations, and to perform damage assessment and expedient repair following a storm.

For military members assigned to the Ride-Out Team, their families will evacuate without them and will need to identify family/special needs early with their chain of command.

Ensure information in the Air Force Personnel Accountability and Assessment System (AFPAAS) is accurate and up-to-date. AFPAAS standardizes a method for the Air Force to account, assess, manage, and monitor the recovery and reconstitution process for personnel and their families affected and/or scattered by a wide-spread catastrophic event. It also provides valuable information to all levels of the Air Force chain of command, allowing commanders to make strategic decisions which facilitate a return to stability.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Capture the sizzle and excitement in JulyNothing beats a grassfed steak seared over a hot grill, with fresh Florida sweet corn, warm and juicy with just a touch of smoky char and fingerling potatoes rubbed with some EVOO, fresh rosemary, sea salt and fresh cracked pepper cradled in tin foil, tucked in the corner of the grill. Of course, if beef isn't your preferred protein, there is always smoked chicken, your choice of grilled Gulf seafood or juicy baby back ribs.

Whether your barbeque style comes out of Memphis, the Carolinas, Georgia, or Texas, the sizzle, the smoke, and the mouth-watering aromas

that come from a grill can be yours if you take the time out this month and enjoy the fun and ease of cooking on a grill! Whether it’s a holiday like Independence Day or Labor Day or a birthday, backyard barbecue or impromptu squadron picnic, the Hurlburt Field Outdoor Recreation can get you set up to fire up the grill with their July BBQ Special. Save over 20% on a propane grill, cooler, table and 10 chairs.

Swimming: Summer Fitness & FunSwimming is a good fitness choice for just about everyone, especially those who have physical limitations or who find other forms of exercise painful. Water cushions stiff joints or fragile bones that might be injured by the impact of land-based exercises.

Swimming recruits all the major muscle groups, including the shoulders, back, abdominals, legs, hips, and glutes. Water affords 12 times the resistance as air in every direction. So, it really helps to build strength.

Swimming aids in mental fitness as well, in part because it is fun. It does not feel as grueling as sweating away on a stationary bicycle or pounding the pavement on a hot summer day. Swimmers attest to the contented feeling of floating

in deep water, particularly outdoors, with blue skies above and scenery to distract the mind.

Swimming not only provides benefits for adults. USA Swimming, the national governing body for swimming, says that the sport builds self-awareness and self-confidence in youth.

The Hurlburt Field Aquatic Center hours of operation include Lap Swim, Tuesday - Friday, 11 AM – 1 PM (Military have priority); Open SwimTuesday – Friday, 1 – 6 PM, Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM; and closed for cleaning on Monday. Regular open swim is $4 per DoD-ID cardholder, AF Club Members receive a $2 discount and $6 per guest. Single and Family Season Passes are available for purchase. Swim lessons are also available.

For more information, call the Aquatic Center, 884-6866, or visit us online http://myhurlburt.com/pages/pool.html.

Our Main CDC was recently re-accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and recognized as 100% compliant! East and West are new facilities which will become eligible for accreditation after one year of operation; however they function under the same guidelines and principles as our main center. For

Welcome to Hurlburt! New Catering Manager at The Soundside

Five minutes with the new Hurlburt Field Soundside Club Catering Manager and you will have the utmost confidence in putting any event in her hands; Karen Cooper is that personable, that knowledgeable and that capable. She brings with her a background in food services spanning over 20 years. Cooper began working as a server at the Club on neighboring Eglin AFB in 1998. In 2001, she became their Club’s Catering Manager.

The chief regret she has about leaving the place she’s worked for 15 years is leaving her brides and grooms behind.

“When you work with people for over a year, leading up to such a big event and then you have to

hand it over to someone else,” she explains. “It’s sad.”

Cooper can assist planning retirements, meetings, weddings, anniversary parties, birthday celebrations and more for anywhere from 50-500 guests.

Prepared menus are assembled for customer convenience and are available online at myhurlburt.com. in the Catering Menu.

“However, the menus are not set in stone,” Cooper assures. “If you don’t see a menu that suits your tastes, give me what you would like, I will meet with our chef, we will price it out for you and see if it [fits within your budget].”

Cooper wants Hurlburt Field to know what she loves about her new venue, some things we may not know and what might be coming up next at the Soundside Club!

Some of the best features about The Soundside“The view of the water and the size of the rooms.”

So, you get engaged…

“You go to the Chapel first, right? Then, your next stop needs to be [the Club] to see me.”

How important is it to book your event ahead of time“In Florida, we sometimes forget where we are. Wedding season is not just one season in Florida. Florida is a destination locale for weddings; not just for those within the Continental U.S., for people from all over the world! As soon as you know you have an event, come see me!”

Upcoming events“Recurring events focused on enjoying the outdoor space, (i.e. the patio area, the new Tiki Hut) and taking advantage of the newly-expanded Hooch Bar & Grill.”

For information on booking your next event at the Soundside, call 884-7507, Monday – Friday from 8 am – 1 pm & 2 – 4 pm. To view the Catering Information Guide and Catering Menu, visit myhurlburt.com.

“I’ve seen doughnut sales do well, but I tell people, ‘Don’t hold them in January when everyone has started their New Year’s resolutions,’” cautions Tina Vandenberg, Fundraiser POC for Private Organizations on Hurlburt Field. “I tell them to wait until August. By then, everybody is ready for some comfort food.” From indoor sports tournaments at the Aderholt Fitness Center to customized

“Teal Deals” at Outdoor Recreation, Vandenberg has seen some very creative fundraising activities in her time. “If you can figure out how to make some money doing it, you can have a fundraiser on a pontoon boat!”

Whether you’ll only have a few individuals or fifty running the event, your Hurlburt Force Support Squadron can help your private organization or squadron earn a good amount of money in a short amount of time. Here are some ideas which may or may not have been considered.

Book an event at one of our fitness centers. If we have the facility, the possibilities are almost endless!

Do You Know About EFMP? You Should. By eFmp-Family support specialist, ruthy srun

WHat is tHe eFmp?The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is designed to assist military families with dependents who have special medical, educational, mental health, behavioral and physical needs. The intent is to ensure as families PCS, medical and educational resources are made available, instead of relocating a family where there are no or limited services available. DO i Have tO enrOll? Enrolling is a mandatory enrollment program for active duty members whose dependents meet the following criteria. The following conditions from DoDI 1315.19, Enclosure 4, qualify dependents for EFMP status:• A potentially life

threatening condition and/or chronic medical/physical condition requiring follow-up support (i.e. chronic migraines, diabetes, heart disease)

• A current and chronic mental health condition (i.e. bipolar, personality, panic disorder, etc.)

• Inpatient or outpatient mental health service within the last 5 years

• Intensive (more than 1 visit a month, for 6 months) mental health services including from your PCM

• A diagnosis of asthma or other respiratory-related conditions with other criteria

• A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD with other criteria

• Requires adaptive equipment (i.e. nebulizer, wheelchair, home oxygen therapy, etc.)

• Has developmental delay or requires special education, as specified on IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan)

WHat Happens WHen i enrOll?Active duty members enrolled in the program get a “Q-Code”, an identifying code allowing the Air Force to recognize the service member has at least one dependent with special needs. The Q-Code does not keep service members from PCSing, deploying, or going on remote tours. is tHere a list OF Bases WHere i Can/Can’t travel BaseD On Criteria? No. Providers and specialists are added or removed from Tricare frequently, so availability of services at other installations is considered as families update their information with the EFMP.WHere DO i gO FOr assistanCe enrOlling in eFmp?The EFMP- Family Support

Specialist ensures Hurlburt families have the information, resources, and support that they need. Whether for those already enrolled in the EFMP or those who need someone to guide them through the entire process. The amount of information and services available to families dealing with a special need can be overwhelming!

Come see how the Hurlburt EFMP-Family Support assists families through: • Monthly fun and support

group meetings such as: movie nights, zoo days, dances, workshops, training, and more!

• Information on child care and youth activities options, including Respite Care and camps

• Base and local community resources

• EFMP enrollment information and forms

• Additional information and assistance as needed

• Assistance for civilians, reservists, and contractors

The primary goal of the EFMP-Family Support is to provide families with the care and assistance they need. For additional information or resources, contact Ruthy Srun at the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 884-5441 or 884-6830; or by emailing [email protected].

the minds to discuss childhood issues, provide feedback on our programs and serve as a resource for us to ensure our planning is in line with parental needs.

yOutH prOgrams (yp)Our Youth Program was recognized two years in a row as the

“Best Youth Program in the Air Force”! This enormous honor does not come without a forward thinking attitude, extensive work with our youth, constant training of our staff and pure dedication to your children. Our YP focuses on the seven Multiple Intelligences as identified by Howard Gardner of Harvard (1991): Visual/Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Linguistic and Logical-Mathematical. Basically, we agree with Gardner’s approach to learning which advocates that there are seven basic learning styles. Most people learn in multiple ways and are typically strongest in one attribute. Hurlburt Youth Center Director, Mr. Del Mucci explained, “By providing an environment which strives to provide opportunities to learn through all disciplines, we give every child the opportunity to excel, build self-esteem and enhance their

awareness and intuitiveness of the world around them.” As the first in the Department of Defense and in Florida to build an accredited outdoor classroom the Hurlburt YP prides itself in their ability to provide learning through nature.

Hurlburt YP is affiliated with the Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) and 4-H. We recently obtained funding from

the Department of Juvenile Justice which will provide programs focused on delinquency prevention, outreach and education.

We offer a School Age program for K-5 featuring Before and After School (B&A) and Summer Camp offerings. Rates are based on family pay levels. Our B&A program serves most Mary Esther, Fort Walton, and Navarre schools as well as some local private schools.

We are currently developing a B&A program for 13-15 year olds, as some parents have expressed a desire for their young teens to have a positive after school destination, rather than a latch-key situation and the added temptations their teen may face.

Hurlburt YP also offers an extensive Pre-Teen and Teen program full of activities, field trips and leadership development through programs like BGCA’s Torch and Keystone Clubs.

You can reach Hurlburt Youth Programs by calling 850-884-6938.

Family CHilD Care (FCC)If a home setting is more your style, our Family Child Care (FCC) office is poised to assist with connecting you with a suitable home care provider. FCC is also your gateway to Extended Duty Care should the need arise outside of normal hours for mission requirements and shift work. The FCC is open for walk-ins

7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday or you can call to schedule an appointment at 850-884-4300.

HEED THIS WARNING: THE DECEPTICONS HAVE ARRIVED IN ORLANDOTHE BATTLE BEGAN JUNE 20

TRANSFORMERS: The Ride – 3D

Orlando, Fla.– Megatron and the Decepticons have closed in on Orlando…

The highly anticipated blockbuster attraction TRANSFORMERS: The Ride – 3D officially opened on Thursday, June 20, 2013, Universal Orlando.

Universal also launched an all-new “Join the Resistance” Facebook experience to prepare fans for the battle they’ll experience on the mega-attraction. “Recruits” can create their very own NEST IDs, train for battle, access exclusive photos and video and win prizes.

TRANSFORMERS: The Ride – 3D is a mind-blowing, action-packed ride experience that pushes the limits of technology to place guests in the middle of a larger-than-life battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. The ride was created under license from Hasbro, Inc. and is based on its iconic TRANSFORMERS brand.

The battle begins when guests enter the NEST facility – the headquarters for the government op-eration that partners with the Autobots to protect Earth from the Decepticons. While inside, they are recruited to help protect the AllSpark – a powerful energy source that would allow the Decep-ticons to destroy the planet. Guests board EVAC – an Autobot created exclusively for the attraction

– to transport the AllSpark to safety. But beware…the Decepticons are in close pursuit…
