ntonietta was born on 8th May 1915, in Delianouva, a small village in Calabria, Italy. Last month, everyone at MYVISTA was delighted to share Antonietta’s 103rd birthday celebration with her and her family. Later, in a quieter moment, Antonietta was kind enough to tell us about her life.

Antonietta lived in Delianouva until she was 18 when she came to Australia with her mother, two brothers and sister. They went to Broken Hill to join her father who had been working there for a few years saving money for his family to join him.

Antonietta’s younger siblings went to school and settled well into the community. But Antonietta and one of her brothers were too old for school, and they and their mother found it difficult to adjust to their new life in Broken Hill. They felt isolated and often lonely.

Word travels fast and before long Pietro, a barber from Perth, heard of an eligible young woman in Broken Hill and travelled the long distance to court Antonietta. They married in 1936 when Antonietta was 21 and moved to Perth. They lived behind the barber shop in the city where she could easily help Pietro in the shop. Sadly, four years later, Pietro died leaving Antonietta with two young children. She moved in with her parents who had by then also moved to Perth.

In 1945, Antonietta married Antonio, a tailor, who had a shop next to the barber’s. Antonio came from Antonietta’s home village of Delianuova so they had much in common and they soon had two children of their own.

e are finally feeling the winter chills and the cold and flu season is upon us. For all

those who have been affected, I trust you are recovering well.

As part of MYVISTA’s responsibility to residents, customers, staff and families we have placed signs reminding all visitors that if you have a cold or flu coming on, please do not visit the facility as this can put your loved one at risk and also other residents and staff. To ensure you stay in contact with your loved ones we are happy to take phone calls and pass on messages so that they know you are okay and thinking of them if you are unable to visit.

The Federal Government has mandated for all aged care providers in Australia to offer free flu vaccinations for staff and residents, a practice that MYVISTA has been doing for over eight years with the support of our wonderful visiting doctors. In particular we thank Dr DiCamillo for his support in providing vaccinations to MYVISTA’s residents and staff.

The Care and Ageing Expo will be held at the Perth Convention Centre on August 4th and 5th. The Expo provides an opportunity for seniors and their families to gather information on available services and options to support older people in WA. Admission is free for full pensioners with a small charge for everyone else. MYVISTA will have a booth at the Expo so please come and say hello if you visit.

Our recent students would like to extend a sincere thank you to all residents and staff at MYVISTA for allowing them the opportunity to learn about caring for older people. The students are wonderfully supported by Mya and staff, and add a great sense of vibrancy to the facility as well as residents’ daily lives. One of MYVISTA’s keys to success has been the ability to provide an open learning program for existing staff as well as people in the community wanting to work in the aged care industry. We see this as vital to the development of the future aged care workforce.

Finally, and as always, we welcome all new residents, families and customers, along with all new staff and volunteers to MYVISTA. Please be sure to ask staff for any assistance or support you may require.

When Antonio passed away in 1951, Antonietta had four young children to bring up alone. To make ends meet, she found work in the kitchen at Coles in Hay Street and later in a hotel kitchen.

Nineteen years later, Antonietta married for a third time to Guglielmo. Shortly afterwards they went to Italy to visit the village of Delianuova where Antonietta was born and grew up. Antonietta was delighted to catch up with family and old friends and amazed to find that everything looked so much smaller than she had remembered from her childhood. It was her first time in a plane, a jumbo jet, and she was very impressed with the flight.

After 30 years of marriage, Antonietta and Guglielmo separated but remained firm friends until his death in 2011. After their separation, Antonietta moved into the house next door to her daughter Rosetta, where she lived independently and happily until she was 98 years of age.

Antonietta then decided it was time to move into MYVISTA and continues to live happily and in good health. Here she found two people who came from her home village. Sadly, Rosa has now passed away but Antonietta and Giuseppina remain good friends. Antonietta loves singing and dancing and really enjoys Friday Happy Hour at MYVISGTA.

Antonietta has survived her two younger brothers and sister. She has three children: Lina (80), Tony (77), Rosetta (71), David (69), 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. No doubt there will be more to come!

To All Staff and Visitors For the safety of pedestrians, please observe the

10km speed limit in MYVISTA’s car park area

It was “haute couture” at MYVISTA when Cameo Loretta visited in

May. They brought a wide variety of clothing and our residents

modelled them in style. What elegant ladies we have residing at

MYVISTA!

Once again, we were privileged to have the Mercy College choir

entertain us in celebration of Easter. They thrilled us with their

presence and joyful, young voices. Then they mingled with the

residents and gave each one an Easter gift of flowers. To help

them get to know the residents, the students each had a short

list of questions to ask and the residents were very happy to

answer those questions and ask a few of their own in return. It

was a lovely occasion.

On 7th May 2008, EK started working at MYVISTA as a part-time accountant and in 2014 commenced full-time work as Finance Manager.

As Finance Manager, EK has a wide range of duties: managing administration staff, supervising all areas of accounting, responsibility for complying with all financial accounting, preparing monthly board reports, liaising with managers of all sections in relation to their respective budgets and preparing the final budget for the whole of the organisation - and the list goes on.

EK enjoys her work and is passionate about getting the best outcomes for residents. She gets great satisfaction from working in a community environment where people are the prime concern.

EK is from Seoul, the capital of South Korea. She came to Australia on a student visa in 2004. Initially she studied English as a second language. Her next course was in aged care and whilst studying for a Certificate III, she spent seven months working in an aged care facility. EK didn’t stop there. She studied accounting at Curtin University for three years and qualified with a Bachelor of Commerce.

While studying in Perth, EK met her husband, Lorenzo. They have been married since 2007 and both love living in Perth.

Eun Kyung (EK) Kim, Finance Manager

Lorenzo’s family lives in Perth and EK travels regularly to South Korea to visit her family.

In fact, travel has become a favourite hobby for EK. She loves to travel – locally, overseas, anywhere - and has done so extensively. A close second on EK’s list of hobbies is “food” and she happily spends time searching for the best restaurants for specific types of food. EK loves playing the piano - she is a qualified pianist!

Over the past four years, EK has spent less time on her hobbies because she was studying part-time while continuing to work full-time. Her dedication has paid off and in December 2017 she was awarded full membership as a Certified Practising Accountant.

We congratulate EK on her academic achievement and on the 10th anniversary of working at MYVISTA.

All in the Village continue to share good times at our Happy Hours and other social events. Recently for Easter, hot cross buns and Easter eggs were favourites. Our regular Pot Luck evening was as popular as ever with many scrumptious dishes tempting the tastebuds. For Mother’s Day, we all gathered together for a chicken dinner.

Elizabeth’s niece, who is a bus driver, organised an amazing trip for us to Fremantle. She drove us there and we started with a delicious fish and chip lunch at (where else?) Fisherman’s Wharf. Then we had a guided tour of all the wonderful sites of Fremantle. It was a fantastic day.

Our most recent event has been our yearly fundraiser for the Cancer Foundation. Thanks to the organisation and preparation of our hardworking social committee and the generosity of the Villagers, the event was a huge success, enabling us once again to offer a substantial donation to this good cause.

The jigsaw in the clubhouse continues to attract those who like a challenge and is a great contact point for anyone who likes to pop in for a chat.

Good times…
