Risk and safety study Panama Canal
Hongkong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and tunnel link (1/2)
Executed by TEC (Tunnel Engineering Consultants)
Project comprises a new connection between Hongkong(east) and Macao and Zhuhai (west), existing of a tunnel (6km), a bridge (30km), and four artificial islands (two for border control facilities and two at both ends of the tunnel)
Hongkong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and tunnel link (2/2)
My task was to determine the size of the armour units for the revetment of the artificial islands, particularly with respect to the expected future sea level rise.I convinced the design institute to use larger armour units than in the original design

Design support for barriers, Republic of Korea
Newly to be constructed barriers, part of the four major river restoration project. For this project 17 barriers are designed for which Dutch expertise was sought to consult on design, construction and maintenance issues.
My tasks were to assist during expert meetings and to organise field trips for the Koreans to Dutch, German and Scottish barriers.
Panama Canal Expansion: Safety against vessel impact
Panama Canal expansion started in 2007, finalisation in 2014. New larger locks on both sides of the channel
How to protect the locks (and thus the water in the lake/ canal) against vessel impact?
Identification of the risks and presentation of 3 possible mitigation measures:
- Operational measures
- Safety gate
- Emergency gate
