    Ethics is…

“theology, viewed as a means of

    determining which human persons,

     acts, and attitudes receive God’s

     blessing and which do not.”

You look back to the register, there is a

    queue.

You think:- this wasn't your mistake

    - maybe something like this will teach

the clerk to be more careful.

    - KFC are a big company they won’t

    miss a few rupees

    What will you do?

We face ethical decisions every, some

big some small: The assistant forgot to charge you for

a KFC Zinger Burger that you ordered.

You realize this as you are walking out

    of the store.

    What do you do?

On Monday morning you realise that you

forgot to do your English assignment which is

due to be handed in that day.The assignment is hard and requires good

    thought and preparation.

On the bus you start to do the assignment.

A friend o"ers you their completed assignment

to copy/adapt in a free period before class.

    What will you do?

    Your non-Christian friend comes

    to you.

She confesses that she has been

sleeping with her boyfriend and is

    now pregnant.

She wants to get an abortion but

    is not sure.

    She asks…

What you think she should do?

    What would you do?

She feels guilty and dirty, will God

    forgive her?

Why do Christians say sex is wrong

    outside of marriage?

The world wants to know “Whats

    wrong with sex before marriage?”

    What’s wrong with anything?

    How do you decide?

‘I do what I feel is right’ – my morals

    are my choice.

‘Society decides what is right and

wrong’ – laws are made and as long

as I stick within them everything is OK.

Or maybe something in between those

    two responses.

The world: it feels good so I do it.

What if it hurts or o!ends me?

In society things are now ‘legal’ that you or

    might disagree with.

Right and wrong for the Christian comefrom a higher standard – they come from

God. The creator is also the moral lawgiv

    1. Gather the facts - what do

we know, what do we need to

know in order to make an

    intelligent decision?

    2. What are the ethical issues? For example are the actions

right or wrong, good or bad -

    what a"ect will actions have

    on other people?

  • 8/16/2019 My Life My Body: A basic introduction to a few ethical questions

    3. What principles are involved - often

for us this means, what does the Bible

    say?

It might also include what do the laws

    of the country say?

It may include values you have/hold.

And then you must decide which are

    most important.

    4. What are the alternatives - what

actions can be taken? Be creative in

your thinking (even though some will

    immediately be rejected)

    5. How do the alternatives and

    principles match up? Often certain

    principles are imptortant and

    therefore exclude some alternatives
