By participating in MY Access! Academy workshops, educators can attend individual or multiple workshops conducted on weekdays and Saturdays at conveniently located regional sites. In addition to being responsive to the budgetary concerns of schools and districts, the convenient scheduling and the opportunity to collaborate with educators from other schools/districts offer positive learning opportunities for all participants. The MY Access! Academy is designed for teachers and administrators engaged in writing instruction at the elementary, middle and high school levels and is composed of a series of three workshops. Academy Workshop #601 Learning to Use MY Access! Participants in this one-day workshop will develop competencies using MY Access! as both a teacher and a student. The audience includes new users, teachers, administrators and Language Arts specialists; the workshop is limited to a maximum number of 20 participants. This "hands-on" workshop provides participants with a comprehensive, step-by-step walk-through of all functionality within the application. During this session, participants will learn how to: Set up and customize writing assignments for their class/group. Effectively teach the stages of the writing process using the MY Access! program. The Challenge Limited Funding for Professional Services According to the National Commission on Writing, "Writing is how students connect the dots in their knowledge…Both the teaching and the practice of writing are increasingly shortchanged…Writing, always time consuming for student and teacher, is today hard-pressed in the American classroom…." Although technology exists to help students improve their writing, many teachers are reluctant to use unfamiliar software, are skeptical of the promised benefits, or are uncertain how to best implement programs such as the MY Access!® writing instructional tool in their classrooms. Smaller districts or individual schools that purchase such tools often don't have the funding to also provide a full spectrum of professional services to assist their teachers in learning how to use the program. The Solution MY Access!® Academy Regional Workshops Until now teachers and administrators could only receive on-site professional development as part of the Score 6! Integrated Solution for MY Access!. Recognizing that this approach may not work for every school or district, Vantage Learning expanded its professional development offerings to accommodate a smaller number of educators at local MY Access! Learn how to use the reports in MY Access! to extract data on student performance and analyze this data for specific information relative to student success.Compare data among groups and against other district writing assessments. Develop an action plan (series of lessons) to target instruction for each area of need. Describe successful prewriting strategies used with specific prompts and the tools and practices used during the drafting stage.Describe how the MY Tutor and Score Report feedback assists students during the revision process.Describe how data from MY Editor and the Error Analysis Report provide instruction in Language Use & Style and Mechanics & Conventions. Describe where in the process teachers should intervene with feedback and model whole, small group or individual instruction.Describe activities designed to decrease students' dependency on the teacher and increase responsibility for their owndecision-making.

Academy Workshop #603Using Data to Assess Student Achievement and Inform Instruction Participants in this one-day workshop will learn how to use the MY Access! reporting function to extract data and determine how this data can inform teacher instruction and intervention strategies to improve student writing achievement. This workshop is designed to deepen teachers' knowledge of the content they teach and expand their repertoire of research-based instructional skills. In addition, participants will determine best practices for writing instruction, utilizing features of MY Access! and effective writing instruction, and will discuss the use of MY Access! as an integral tool in teaching and assessing the writing process. Workshop size is limited to 20 participants. Please note: Participants in this workshop should first

Learn how rubrics can be used as powerful tools for learning about writing.Teach students to recognize the qualities of effective writing and transfer these qualities to their own writing practice.Develop a repertoire of prewriting, drafting, organizing and revising strategies.Provide students and parents with feedback during the revision process. Teach students how to set measurable and achievable goals, edit and revise, and manage their own writing process.Provide students with strategies to become independent, confident and responsible learners.

Academy Workshop #602Developing a Curriculum and Assessment Plan Aligned to StandardsParticipants in this one-day workshop will map MY Access! prompts to standards, district goals and curriculum content/objectives, develop a scope and sequence guide that assists teachers in their pacing of the integration of writing, and develop an assessment plan that will be used to measure long-term growth in student writing.
