OmniScan MX2 Training – Material Velocity Overview

The only component material parameter that is

required for the phased array calculator is thevelocity of sound for shear wave and\or

longitudinal wave transmission.

The OmniScan MX2 software contains a

dataase with common material types and their

velocities. The material type and shear\longitudinal are

normally selected during the wi!ard group

creation as part of the setup process.

"ustom velocities can e entered manually as

needed in the #T settings su menu and can emeasured using the velocity caliration wi!ard.

The material velocity must e $nown prior to

focal law creation. The velocity cannot e

modified in the MX2 without recreating the focal

laws.

%iven the same eam parameters& materials will have slightly different

velocity for each angle. 'or shear wave eams in ()(* caron steel etween )+,) degrees there

is less than -) meters per second of velocity deviation. 'or shear wave eams in ()(* caron steel etween -+/) degrees

there is less than (- meters per second deviation.

This velocity range results in less than ( degree eam deviation and ismore accurate than the errors resulting from manual caliration.

'or those reasons& the MX2 uses one velocity for all focal laws within the group.

The velocity can e set independently for each group.

5o. Only velocity is required for asic eam formation of steering and focus. The material component thic$ness is required for the s$ip lines and

trigonometry readings ut it is not an essential variale for the calculatorand it can e changed at any time efore or after caliration with no affecton the eam or caliration.

Selection of the focus point is often ased on thic$ness ut entered

separately in the software.

The OmniScan MX2 has a velocity measurement wi!ard that is e6plained ina later section.
