3.3.6. SECTION 2.4: COLLECTION AND CONVEYANCE OF SEPTAGE

In this section, details on the number of functional de-sludging suction trucks (by volume)

owned by the ULB and private operators are to be filled. Functional de-sludging suction trucks

refer to those trucks which are currently being used and are in full working condition.

Apart from the ULB owned de-sludging suction trucks, the details for the functional private de-

sludging suction trucks should be obtained from private de-sludging truck operators.

3.3.7. SECTION 2.5: DETAILS OF DISPOSAL SITE/STP AND DISTANCE TO

DISPOSAL SITE/STP

In this section, the user has to fill the site where the ULB/Private de-sludging operators dispose

the septage collected from septic tanks/pits in the ULB.

A disposal site can be defined as any place inside or outside the ULB where the ULB/Private

de-sludging operators dispose the septage. It can be a vacant land, farmland, trench, water

bodies, etc.

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) refers to a plant that receives raw sewage and treats it so as to

render it less dangerous and less odorous and which can be reused for other purposes.

Distance to disposal site/STP: Calculate the distance in kilometres from a central point in the

ULB to the disposal site/STP

To add details on disposal site/STP and distance for each of the de-sludging operators click on

the ‘Add’ icon next to the title.

From our example, there are totally 6 de-sludging operators (1 ULB + 5 private operators).

When you select the first cell on ‘De-sludging operators’, the drop-down will list out all 6

operators.

If the ULB has a functional de-sludging suction truck, consider ‘De-sludging Operator-1’

the ULB.

Figure 70: Sec 2.5 – Details of operators

Fill in the necessary details for ‘De-sludging Operators-1’. For example, the ULB disposes the

septage in a STP located 16 kms and the data should be filled as such,

Click on the ‘Save’ button before proceeding to enter the details for other operators.

To add the details for the next operator, again click on the ‘Add’ icon and select ‘De-sludging

Operators-2’. For example, if private operator 1 disposes the septage in a vacant land situated 9

kms from the center of the ULB, then select ‘De-sludging Operators-2’ from the drop down list

and fill in the appropriate details for disposal site and distance.

Figure 72: Sec 2.5 – Details of operator 2, disposal site/STP and distance

It is possible that one operator can have multiple disposal sites. In such cases, select the same de-

sludging operator number from the drop down and fill in the details. For example, if private

operator 1 apart from disposing the septage in a vacant land situated 9 kms from the centre of

the ULB, also disposes the septage in a farmland, then select ‘De-sludging Operators-2’ again

from the drop down list and fill in the appropriate details for disposal site and distance.

3.3.8. SECTION 2.6: ESTIMATE OF SEPTAGE AND SEWAGE GENERATION IN

THE ULB

In this section, the user will fill details on the drinking water supply in the ULB. In addition, the

user has to fill in the estimated generation of septage per year from the ULB. This data has to be

collated from the private de-sludging operators.

Q.2.6 (1) Per capita drinking water supply in the ULB (litres per captia per day - lpcd)

Provide the per capita drinking water supply in the ULB in lpcd

Figure 78: Sec 2.6 – Per capital drinking water supply in the ULB

Q.2.6 (2) Estimate generation of septage (from septic tanks/pits) per year (Million litres)

The data to estimate the generation of septage from septic tanks per year has to be obtained

from ULB (in case the ULB has a functional de-sludging truck) and each of the private operators

working the ULB. For example, if there are 5 private de-sludging operators working the ULB,

the data should be obtained from each of the private operators.

Please use the Septate Estimate Calculator (Excel format) attached along with this User Manual

to calculate the septage generation per year.

Septate Estimate Calculator:

This calculator has been designed in such a way that is automatically calculates the septage

generation in the ULB (in million litres) per year.

Table 3: Septage estimate calculation sheet

In the excel calculator, there are eight questions of which the de-sludging operators have to

provide details for only serial numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 (those shaded in green).

Table 4: Instructions to fill the septage estimate calculation sheet

Sl. No Details Instructions

1 Number of septic tanks or pits emptied in a month (average)

Ask the operator, how many septic tanks or pits s/he empties on an average in a month. For example, operator 1 empties an average of 25 septic tanks/pits a year. Enter the value ‘25’ in Cell A1

2 Variation of generally monthly average (in +/-%)

Ask the operator if there are any seasonal variations. That is, during rainy seasons there would be more septic tanks/pits to be emptied than the monthly average or in some months the number of septic tanks to be cleaned might be lesser than the monthly average of 25. If it is a minus value, add a minus sign before the percentage (-25%) For example, during the rainy months of October and November, the operator empties 25% more septic tanks/pits than the monthly average of 25. Enter 25% in Cell A2.

3 Number of months with variations mentioned above (in number)

Here, note the number of months for which these variations apply. For example, the operator empties 25% more septic tanks/pits during the months of October and December. So it is 2 months. Enter the value ‘2’ in Cell A3.

4 Average volume of the septic tanks/pits assumed emptied (in litres)

Ask the operator, the average volume of the septic tanks/pits empties in litres that is, 3,000 litres or 5,000 litres For example, if the average size of the septic tanks/pits assumed emptied (in litres) is 3,000 litres, enter the value ‘3000’ in Cell A5.

Repeat the steps for all the operators and use the value calculated in Cell M7 (Shaded

red) to fill in the MuSu app.
