o Most of us, putting a portion of our income

into the bank is our sole strategy for

weathering emergencies and meeting our

future needs.

Savings

o Your savings in the bank alone may not be

enough to buy you “financial security”.

o One of the best solutions is to invest in –

Mutual Funds.

o Fortunately, there are other ways to make

your money grow.

A Mutual Fund is a pool of funds of many

individual and institutional investors and

invested in diversified portfolio of investments.

What is a Mutual Fund?

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

8

Page 9: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

How it works:

o Individual investors, companies, and other organizations

will pool their money and will entrust that fund to a

professional fund manager under a mutual fund

company.

o The fund manager will invest the money to different

investment securities.

o These securities will then generate returns.

o And the returns that will be earned* will then pass back to

the investors.

* Investing in mutual funds doesn’t always guarantee positive returns. Returns may rise or fall, thus investments may gain or lose in worth when redeemed.

Is it the right investment for me?

o If you are not a good stock picker.

o If you don’t have the time.

o If you are potential emotional

investor.

So you don’t have to research the fundamentals and

the technical indicators of each of the stock that you

are planning to invest in.

So you would be able to do other important stuffs, might

it be your work or household chores etc.

Some of the stock investors (or traders) lose money

in the stock market mostly beginners because they tend

to be more emotional especially when they see “red” or

when the prices are going down. They lose their

objective and so their money.

In mutual funds, the fund manager wil take care of

choosing the best companies to put your money.

No need keep on eye of the stock price movements in

the stock market from 9:30AM to 3:30PM like those who

are personally buying and selling stocks in the stock

market.

In mutual funds, you’ll be entrusting your investments to

the fund manager who has the full control of your

money and has the expertise to position the investments

according to funds’ objective.

ADVANTAGES OF INVESTING IN

MUTUAL FUNDS

1. Professional management:

One of the main attractions of mutual funds is that it

affords its investors the services of full-time professional

managers whose job is to analyze the various investment

products available in the market.

2. Low capital requirement:

Direct investments usually require substantial capital. In

contrast, most mutual funds in the Philippines require a

minimum initial investment amount of only Php5,000.00 and

minimum additional of Php1,000.00.

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

3. Potential Higher Returns:

Very few individual investors can match the experience

and skill of full-time professional fund managers who can

select those that would give the best possible returns.

4. Liquidity:

While the law provides that redemption proceeds must be

given within seven (7) banking days from the date of the

redemption request, most funds are able to pay the

redemption proceeds within a day.

5. Diversification:

investing in variety of assets; here is a saying that goes,

“Do not put all your eggs in one basket.” When people

invest in a mutual fund, they achieve instant diversification.

6. Convenience:

Investment application can now do with the help of

internet and additional investments can now deposit thru

banks’ internet banking fund transfer / bills payment

facilities.

7. Safety:

Mutual funds are highly regulated by the Securities and

Exchange Commission under the Investment Company Act

and its implementing rules.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sees to it that all mutual funds comply with legal regulations. Moreover, mutual fund companies are regularly audited by an independent auditor. And the assets of the mutual fund are held by a third-party custodian bank.

21

Inflation As defined by Investopedia, is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling.

25

Page 26: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

How does Inflation affect your

investment?

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

First, let me put everything in a simple analogy.

Here the plant stands as the investment, the water (or the

nurturing of the plant) stands as the investment return, and

the caterpillar stands as the inflation. As the water (returns

as gains) makes the plant grow, the caterpillar eats up the

plant’s leaves and the plant can either outgrow the

damages done by the caterpillar or it just die.

Same with our investments, inflation can either be

outperformed by the gains of your investments or the

inflation could totally eat up the gains you have earned.

26

Page 27: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

How does Inflation affect your

investment?

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

Year 1: Year 5:

Let’s see the effect of inflation in the prices of goods.

If the set of goods priced P1,000.00 today, that will not cost

the same after 5 years if our inflation rate is, let’s say – 4%.

If the price of goods increases the actual value of our

investments is also affected.

Do you know how much this set of goods will cost after 5

years ? Do you know how much of these goods’ price

increase will affect the growth of our investments after 5

years?

27

Page 28: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

How does Inflation affect your

investment?

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

Now let’s see what will happen to your P1,000.00 if you

invest it in an investment instrument with an annual growth

of 10% and how much the set of goods costed P1,000.00

today will then cost after 5 years if the inflation rate is 4%

annually.

How does Inflation affect your

investment?

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

If inflation was 4% and your investment has an annual return

of 10% then the actual return is 6%. By the Fisher equation

(nominal interest rate – inflation rate = real interest rate) we

see the difference between your investment’s nominal and

real growth. The nominal growth is the growth of the

investors’ money, while the real growth is the growth of their

purchasing power.

So always choose an investment instrument that has a

potential return above the inflation rate.

PESO-COST AVERAGING

30

Page 31: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

PESO-COST AVERAGING

The Peso-Cost Averaging (PCA) is a time-tested personal

wealth-building strategy that has been proven to work by

investing a certain amount of money in regular intervals

over a period of time. This strategy is as easy as 1, 2, 3:

31

STEP 1

How much do

you want to invest

on a regular basis

STEP 2

How often you

wish to fund your

investment

STEP 3

How long do you

plan to invest

For Example

Amount:

Php 5,000

Interval:

Monthly

Time Frame:

10 Years

Let’s see how important following this strategy is.

The chart below shows the sample NAVPS (or simply the

price per share) of a fund in a year. For example, here you

were able to buy shares every month starting in January

until December in a fluctuating NAVPS.

The highest NAVPS here was in March of P6.00 per share

and the lowest was in August of P1.00 per share.

Assuming that you won’t be needing to redeem your

investments in the very near future, should you be

worried when prices go down and happy when the

prices go up? Find out the answer on the next page…

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

Page 33: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

PESO-COST AVERAGING

33

First, to know how much of shares you have bought each

month, just divide your investment minus the entry fee to the

NAVPS [(investment - fee)/NAVPS]. Below, let’s say you

invested P5,000 every month and let’s omit first the

applicable fees to make our computations easier

(investment/NAVPS).

833.33

5,000.00

-

1,000.00

2,000.00

3,000.00

4,000.00

5,000.00

Your total investment in one year was P60,000, and the total

of your bought shares was 20,916.67. You were able to buy

MORE shares when the NAVPS was low and bought LESS

shares when the NAVPS was high. So, regarding to my

question on the previous page, you should not worry but

rejoice at the time you see the prices go down because

you can actually buy “more” shares.

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

Page 34: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

PESO-COST AVERAGING

34

Why still use peso-cost averaging if you could make your

investment in lump sum?

PCA strategy works best in investing in an instrument that

has no definite future. It’s still better to use PCA in a volatile

environment like in mutual funds because you will have the

chance to buy more shares when the price per share goes

down like as what I have shown on the table above. PCA

strategy has managed to buy a total of 20,916.67 shares in

one year compared to 15,000 shares only bought in lump

sum in January.

APPLICABLE FEES

A sales charge deducted from the investments of clients

in the fund at the time the investment is made.

For example: You invest P10,000 in a mutual fund that

has a sales load of 2%.

[P10,000 – (P10,000 x 2%)] = P9,800 (your net investment)

o Sales Load

o Exit Fee

o Management Fee

A fee charged to an investor for withdrawing money

from the mutual fund prior to the end of a pre-specified

holding period.

For example: You withdraw a worth of P10,000 in your

investment on the 5th month in a mutual fund that has a

1% exit fee and a holding period of 6 months.

[P10,000 – (P10,000 x 1%)] = P9,900 (net withdrawn)

The fee charged by the company for the management

of the fund’s investment portfolio. This fee is included in

the calculation of the fund’s daily Net Asset Value Per

Share (NAVPS).

Mutual Funds by Rex Holgado

Page 51: Mutual Funds | Rex Holgado | KaAsenso | TGFI

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s in it for the fund manager?

Management Fees. The Amount will vary (normally ranging

from 1.5% to 3% of the total assets per year). Note that the

NAVPS that are published are already net of the

management fee that is amortized daily.

Where will you invest my money?

Your money will be invested in the shares of the mutual fund

of your choice. Mutual funds, on the other hand, are

invested in baskets of securities that vary depending on the

type of fund. Hence if you choose an equity fund, then you

buy shares of a mutual that invests mainly in listed stocks(90%

maximum). A bond fund or fixed-income fund, in contrast,

invests exclusively on interest bearing instruments. A mutual

fund’s investment universe, including restrictions and risks,

can be found in the fund’s prospectus.

How long is the maturity period?

Mutual funds do not have maturity periods which means that

the shareholders can actually sell their shares in any banking

day. Furthermore, mutual funds are required by law to buy

back the shares from the shareholders and to release the

proceeds of any sale within seven banking days. Most mutual

funds however, charge exit fees for short-term investors and

this may vary from fund-to-fund. In FAMI’s case, the exit fee is

1% for the investments of less than 6 months. The exit fee is

waived after the sixth month.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I lose money in Mutual funds?

Yes, depending on market conditions. The fund manager’s

job is ultimately to minimize risks and losses for the

shareholder.

How much interest do I get as an investor?

Mutual funds do not give fixed returns. Returns are based on

the difference between your buying price and the current

NAVPS. Market conditions play a major role in determining

the annual returns of mutual funds.

What prevents the fund manager from running away with my

money?

Mutual Funds are structured in a manner that protects the

interest of its shareholders. The fund manager does not have

any control over the physical assets of a mutual fund except

to make buying and selling decisions. The assets are held by

a custodian bank, appointed by the shareholders, who in

turn cannot transact for these assets.

What happens to my investment if I die?

Your shares in the mutual fund will form part of your estate

and will be distributed to your heirs (usually surviving spouse

and children) accordingly. There are tax issues involved in this

regard.

Can I tell the fund manager what to buy or sell?

No. The fund managers will follow the investment parameters

indicated in the fund’s prospectus.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the net asset value per share, or NAVPS?

The net asset value per share (NAVPS) is the value of each

share of a mutual fund. A fund's NAVPS is calculated daily

and is the price used when purchasing or selling mutual fund

shares. To determine the value of your shares, simply multiply

the number of shares you own by the NAVPS.

Is my investment covered by the PDIC?

No. A mutual fund is not a deposit product and is, therefore,

not covered by the PDIC. However, when you invest in a

mutual fund, you are considered a shareholder and in effect

are entitled to your proportional share in the total assets of

the fund. The PDIC, on the other hand, only insures up to

P250,000 of your total deposits with a bank and not your

entire investment amount.

"Financial peace isn't the acquisition of stuff. It's learning to live on less than you make, so you can give money back and have money

to invest. You can't win until you do this."
