Principal’s Message

Welcome to the 206-2017 school year at MacGregor Colle-

giate Institute. It has been a very busy summer, and we are

off to a tremendous start to the school year!

MacGregor Collegiate is a dynamic place to work and learn,

and I want to encourage our students to find some way to

get connected to MCI above and beyond their regular class

periods. Currently, we have athletic teams, student council,

and many school clubs. By becoming involved in MCI’s

extracurricular programs, students are creating actual real-

life, non-electronic social networks and are surrounding

themselves with students who possess similar interests. Con-

nected students do better in the classroom and they contribute

to the amazing school spirit we have here.

Finally, it’s never too soon to start check with your child’s

academic progress. If you ever have any questions about

your student’s academic progress, please do not hesitate to

contact our teachers. If your student needs assistance, our

teachers, resource team, and support staff are here to help!

We know it will be an exciting, fulfilling and rewarding

year at MacGregor Collegiate!

Mustangs Athletics

Welcome back to another exciting school year and what promises to be

another great year for Mustangs Athletic and MCI.

The start of the school year is the busiest time of year for Mustangs Ath-

letics. Golf, cross country, volleyball, and soccer all start right away. With

Zone golf being Friday, September 16th at Carberry, the team is ready to

be competitive this year in a strong Zone 7.

The soccer teams have begun practicing as they begin their seasons next

week. The soccer teams start their regular season on Thursday, September

15th, where the boys host Rivers. The girls will start their season on the

20th when both teams travel to Minnedosa. This year, the soccer teams will

be travelling to Minnedosa for the Zone 7 playoff tournament which will be

held all day on October 6th. This should be an exciting day for both teams.

The senior boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams begin their season on Saturday,

September 17th, travelling to Treherne for the Early Bird tournament.

With a strong group of returning players, both teams are expecting great

things this year. The Senior boys will host their tournament on September

24th while the Sr girls will travel to Morris on the same weekend. The JV

Boys first action is on September 24th in Neepawa as well as hosting their

tournament on Oct 1st. The JV girls travel to Virden on September 30th and

October 1st.

The cross-country team has already started running and are excited about

the zone (September 28th) and provincial (October 12th) meets.

Intramural indoor soccer begins this week. There are 6 teams involved.

Make lunch time intramurals an active part of your day!

With the start of the new school year, there are always many forms that go

home and come back to school. One of those is the student accident insur-

ance form. I mention this only because students need some type of student

accident insurance for the ski trip that Mustangs Athletics organizes for

March. (Pine Creek school division policy). It is also strongly suggested

that if students are playing extra-curricular sports that they have some

kind of insurance.

In closing, thank you to all the volunteer coaches and teacher supervisors

who make all this possible and good luck to all the teams this year, making

2016-17 the best year yet!!!!

Mustangs Athletics also has a website where you can find all the schedules

that Mr. Gaudet has for extra-curricular events (If it is not on there, Mr.

Gaudet has not received it yet): www.mustangsathletics.pbworks.com

There is school clothing available to order, see Mr. McKinstry for sizing

options.

What is a Peer Helper?

The Peer Helper program is based on the fact that

students most often seek out other students for help

when they are experiencing frustration, concern,

worry or general problems.

A Peer Helper is someone who cares about other

students and who talks with them about their

thoughts and feelings. A peer helper is a sensitive

and attentive listener who uses their communication

skills to facilitate self-exploration and decision mak-

ing. A Peer Helper is not a therapist or a counsellor.

A major purpose of peer helping is to increase the

number of people in the school who are skilled at

helping others. Their main focus is on their presence

within the everyday social network of their fellow

students.

If there are any questions about the Peer Helper

Program or if you would like to sign up please see

Mrs. Snaith, Mrs. Blyth, or Mrs. Single.

MCI Seeking Sponsors for our Athletic Programs

Mustangs Athletics is looking for your help. We are looking for sponsorships from local and surrounding area businesses in order to refurbish our sporting team jerseys. If in-terested please email [email protected] or call at 204-685-2047. You will receive thanks in our local newsletters, public events, and a team pic-ture thanking you for your kind donation. Thank you very much for supporting Mus-tangs Athletics!

The News From Foods Students returning to MCI this fall were wowed by the stainless steel gleam glow-ing in the sunlight in the foods room. The renovations are complete and students (and staff) have been enjoying the new equipment installed this summer, cooking up a storm already. The renovation plan and execution was the result of team work and consultation among a surprisingly large group of invested people. A Sin-cere Thank-you to each of you whom contributed to this pro-ject. The depth to which it was so careful-ly planned out and executed is reflected in the beauty and versatility of the room, and our ability to make it a use-ful space for the greater community. The renovation is an asset not only for MCI, but for all our user groups and community as a whole. Stay tuned for more adventures in Foods!

Jordyn Ham and Joe Tomchuk, along with staff ad-visor Mrs. Polasek, will have the opportunity to partici-pate in the province-wide youth leadership training taking place over the course of the year. The purpose of the Stu-dent Leadership Cohort is to enhance student leadership in the area of human rights and cultural proficiency. The entire team looks forward to learning during the training sessions and sharing their tal-ents in the school and community.

Career and Technology Studies: Career and Technology Stud-

ies or CTS is a strategy to enable students in small rural high

schools to access technical / vocational options.

CTS optimize learning opportunities for students by combin-

ing the resources of both school and community to create

flexible individualized programming. CTS aligns curricular out-

comes from school-based courses, community based intern-

ships, and career development activities to support student

learning. This combination of learning opportunities is de-

signed for student participants to increase the depth and

breadth of their personal knowledge and experience. Commu-

nity partners are always welcome, have a career you want to

showcase, give me a call, perhaps we have a student interest-

ed in interning!

GRADE 9- 11: If you have not already done so you should

be considering the Community Service credit, forms are avail-

able in the Student Services room. Career Cruising sessions

will be planned for October. Students are encouraged to be

checking post- secondary requirements to be sure they are

taking the required courses.

Parents: check out the Career Resources on the

MCI website Career and Technology Studies.
