reading skillsFor this project, you’ll need to use all the strategies of a skilled reader, because there are many different types of text and images involved. Use this sheet to make sure you’re getting the most out of everything you read.
Notice the middle column has the most strategies in it. Why do you think this is? What does it tell us about the activity of reading?
Which ones do you know you use often? Highlight them in green. You don’t need to worry about these.
Which ones do you use occasionally? Highlight them in yellow. Try to use these more often.
Which ones have you never used? Highlight them in red. You may need to ask your teacher to demonstrate these reading strategies.
Which reading strategies do you think you’ll need to use for this project? How many of these have you highlighted in yellow? Those are the ones to focus on during the task!
• Preview
• Ask questions about the text to get a first impression, e.g. will it be worth reading?
• Predict what might happen
• Discuss
• Read between the lines. Does what characters say give away clues about their thoughts and motives?
• See images in your head
• Hear a voice – who is talking to you as you read?
• Sort out ideas
• Reread and interpret
• Empathise, feel
• Establish a relationship with the narrator
• Pass comments and judgements
• Relate to your own experience
• Do you know what to expect from your reading? You wouldn’t pick up a recipe book and use it in the same way as you would a novel.
• Respond in different ways to what you read, depending on your own experiences
• Make judgements
• Draw conclusions
• Relate to your previous reading experience
