BUFFALO GROVE HIGH SCHOOL THEATER ARTS PRESENTS

Little Women The Broadway Musical

Book by Allan Knee Lyrics by Mindi Dickstein Music by Jason Howland

Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott

ABOUT THE MUSICAL Produced nationally and internationally, Little Women has been praised by critics for its ambition in adapting such a well-known story for the stage. This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love. The original production starred the unparalleled Sutton Foster, who received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for her performance. Based on Louisa May Alcott's life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested – her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

This evening’s performance features one 15-minute intermission.

Little Women is presented through special arrangement

SENIOR BIOGRAPHIES Ruth Ramos (Beth) - Ruth Ramos is thrilled to be participating as a cast member in her fourth and final musical production as a high school student. She has been involved in the past 3 musicals performed on the Buffalo Grove High School stage and has been more than excited for being given this opportunity for a fourth time. Ruth wishes to give a huge thank you to all of the directors and teachers who put in a great amount of time and effort to give the students the best experience they can have for this show under these strange circumstances. She will carry the lovely

memories that her wonderful peers and those who helped guide her have created.

Melanie Reitman (Stage Manager, Charge Scenic Artist) - Melanie is a four-year member of tech crew and is proud to be participating in her 11th production at Buffalo Grove High School. Her favorite show from high school is Les Miserables because of the backstage shenanigans and the incredible learning opportunities it provided. She will be continuing her technical theatre journey in college by studying scenic design. She would like to thank Mr. Moon, Mr. Tschammer, Ms. Stenzel, Ms. Wells, and Mr. Garneau for constantly pushing her to do her

best and for supporting her endlessly throughout her high school experience. She would also like to thank her fellow tech crew members, past and present, for making tech such a special and important part of her life.

Carrie Smith (Pit Orchestra - Viola) - Carrie is excited to be participating in the pit orchestra in her second production at BGHS. This is her fourth year playing viola in the BGHS music program. Carrie wishes to thank Mrs. Bennett.

Epiphany Sosa (Pit Orchestra - Piano) - Epiphany is excited to participate in her first year of pit. She has been involved with the BGHS Orchestra Program for the last four years. She has many years of experience as a pianist and is proud to be finishing her senior year as a pianist for pit. Epiphany wishes to thank Mrs. Bennett for her constant support and encouragement.

SENIOR BIOGRAPHIES Samantha Macauley (Jo) - This is Samantha’s 11th show that she has been involved in at BGHS. She has been a part of the theater program for all 4 years of high school and couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with. In the fall, she will be attending Bradley University to study theater performance. She’d like to thank Ms. Utley, Ms. Wells, and Ms. Stenzel for making her high school experience astonishing!

Marianne Mejia (Pit Orchestra Member - Cello) - This is Marianne's second time being involved in the BGHS Theater program as a pit orchestra cellist and she has loved being a part of this wonderful program for her freshman and senior year at BG. Marianne wishes to thank Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Kappler and Mr. Lestina for leading her onto this musical journey throughout high school.

Ella Palffy (Hag) - This is Ella's third full production at Buffalo Grove High School. She has been involved in the choir program for the past four years. She loves performing and is excited to be ending her high school career with this incredible show. Ella would like to thank the directors and her family for all of their support. This is by far the swaggiest, haggiest show she has ever been a part of.

Sydney Paunan (Pit Orchestra - Violin) - Sydney is thrilled to be participating in Little Women this year as a violinist in the pit orchestra. This is her third production as a part of the BGHS Theater Program, having joined the pit orchestras for Les Misérables and Once Upon a Mattress. She is so happy that the theater program, with its amazing friendships and inside jokes, has been a part of her high school experience and musical journey. She is especially glad that she was able to participate in the musical for her senior year, considering the many challenges of performance during COVID. Sydney is incredibly grateful to Mr.

Kappler, Mr. Katz, Mrs. Bennett, and Mr. Lestina for their invaluable support throughout the past four years, and to Ms. Wells and Ms. Stenzel for their guidance in the classroom. Sydney hopes to continue playing in musicals in college, where she will be majoring in environmental studies with a minor in violin performance.

SENIOR BIOGRAPHIES

Hannah Greenspan (Knight, Assistant Director) - Hannah has been a part of BGHS productions since Les Mis, and has found her place at BG in the theater department. She’s loved getting the opportunity to play both ensemble and lead roles, and forming bonds with her fellow cast mates and directors. Hannah is sad to be leaving this school and this program, but she will hold close all the memories of cast parties, rehearsals, and late night theater fest cookies! Hannah is majoring in psychology but hopes to stay active in the theater and improv community in the future! She wants to

thank all the BG directors for allowing her to be a part of Little Women and for introducing her to everything theater has to offer!

Sebastian Gutierrez (Mr. Lawrence) - Sebastian is excited to be performing his final year in high school as a lead in Little Women. After the show was cancelled last year, he was devastated and held a lot of hope that this year would be different. Sebastian’s been a part of the BGHS Theater Program for the last 4 years, as multiple roles, starting from a Sailor in Les Miserables all the way to his role this year! Musicals are a perfect way for him to express his love of singing and acting. He has multiple people to express

his gratitude for, including his directors, Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Stenzel, and Mrs. Utley, for their ability to help him grow, not just as a performer, but as a dedicated young man. He would also like to thank his parents for their support throughout Sebastian’s high school acting career. They’ve ensured that he continues to show his talent!

Zoey Heinrich (Aunt March) - Zoey is excited to be participating in this production as Aunt March. This is her twelfth show with the BGHS Theater Program, and she is grateful for the memories she made during her time in the program. Zoey wishes to thank her directors, family, and friends for giving her irreplaceable experiences, unconditional support, and encouragement to be her best self on and off stage.

Katie Koblas (Stage Manager) - Katie has proudly participated in tech crew for the past four years at Buffalo Grove High School. She has been stage manager for 2 shows at BG. Her favorite shows were Les Mis and Noises Off, because of all of the learning opportunities and laughs back stage. Katie will be going to University of Wyoming to study nursing in the fall, but hopefully will still be able to participate in theater. She would like to thank Mr. Tschammer, Mr. Moon, Mrs. Stenzel, Mrs. Wells, and Mr. Goldspiel. She would also like to thank all of the Techies

that she has met these past few years for making her High School Experience so memorable.

SENIOR BIOGRAPHIES

Haley Durso (Production Assistant) - Haley is excited to participate in her final production at Buffalo Grove High School. The memories that she has made over these past four years will not be easily forgotten. She has found nothing but support in the BGHS theater program and she is grateful for the many things that she has learned. While it is always daunting to say goodbye, she looks forward to seeing what the future holds. Haley greatly appreciates all the amazing people that she has met. She would like to thank the directors, casts, and crew members that she has encountered for the wonderful memories.

Ethan Ernst (Properties Master) - Ethan is proud to be participating in his 2nd production this year as the head of the props department. He has been involved with the BGHS Theatre Program since his Freshman year as a member of both the set construction and props crews. He’s had many years of experience as an active member of the props crew and is proud to be finishing his final year as the head of the props team. HatKid

wishes to thank Phil Tschammer, Lauren Stenzel, Beth Wells, for their camaraderie and support.

Ryan Gledhill (Set Construction) - Ryan is honored to have been involved in the BGHS theater program over the past four years as part of the running crew and construction crew. His favorite shows were Noises Off and The Heidi Chronicles because of the many opportunities to learn, grow, and laugh. Ryan will attend Drake University in the fall to study Digital Media Production. Ryan would like to thank Mr. Moon, Mr. Tschammer, Mr. Goldspiel, Mrs. Stenzel, Mrs. Wells, and all of the wonderful goof balls that we call Techies. Thank you for making this

something special.

David Gonzalez (Mr. John Brooke) - This is David’s 2nd year as a cast member for the BGHS theatre program, with not much acting experience, he always wishes to learn and grow at each and every rehearsal from his teachers and fellow cast members. He is very excited to create fond memories with everyone and to have an amazing last show!

Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet best known as the author of the novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels. Raised in New England, she grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Alcott's family suffered from financial difficulties, and while she worked to help support the family from an early age, she also sought an outlet in writing. She began to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s. Early in her career, she sometimes used pen names such as A. M. Barnard, under which she wrote lurid short stories and sensation novels that focused on passion and revenge. Published in 1868, Little Women is loosely based on Alcott's childhood experiences with her three sisters, Abigail May Alcott Nieriker, Elizabeth Sewall Alcott, and Anna Alcott Pratt. Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist and was active in the Temperance and Women’s Suffrage movements. Unmarried throughout her life, Louisa May Alcott died from a stroke, two days after her father, in Boston on March 6, 1888.
