I hope you enjoy “Cool Songs that ROCK™” (book 1)”. I want to help teach fun, cool piano concepts and skills by using original rock piano solos I have written for the intermediate piano student.

The pieces in this book will help you learn fun, cool piano skills (music theory, technique, transposing, improvising, composing, etc.) through fun and upbeat cool sounding piano selections composed by me - your personal Music Mentor™ - Jerald Simon. Have fun with the music!

Dedicated to the rocker within each of us who enjoys fun, cool, pop and rock rhythms. Rock on piano students (and, of course, piano teachers)! You are rock stars!

Also, to my wife, Suzanne (Zanny), my little girl, Summer, and my son Preston.

The image of Jerald above is the cover image of his single, TRIUMPHANT, composed with runners and athletes in mind. Watch the music video/side-show by visiting this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXd-NBDbPc8

There are seven original pop and rock piano solos written by Jerald Simon in this book. It is designed for intermediate - to late intermediate piano students. This series picks up where the “Cool Songs for Cool Kids™ Series™” ends (visit http://musicmotivation.com/coolsongsforcoolkids to learn more about the “Cool Songs for Cool Kids™ Series™”).

The Cool Songs for Cool Kids™ Series™ (primer level - for beginning students, volume 1 - for early intermediate levels, volume 2 - for early intermediate to intermediate levels, and volume 3 - for intermediate - late intermediate levels) is not a method series or a series of method books. Each book contains 21 original performance pieces (except for volume 3 which contains just 10 original piano solos) all written by Music Mentor™ Jerald Simon (visit http://musicmotivation.com/jeraldsimon to learn more about Jerald).

A message from Jerald to piano students and parents:If you come to piano lessons each week and walk away only having learned about music notation, rhythm, and dots on a page, then I have failed as a Music Mentor™. Life lessons are just as important, if not more important than music lessons. I would rather have you learn more about goal setting and achieving, character, dedication, and personal improvement. To have you learn to love music, appreciate it, and play it, is a wonderful byproduct you will have for the rest of your life - a talent that will enrich your life and the lives of others. To become a better musician is wonderful and important, but to become a better person is more important.

As a Music Mentor™ I want to mentor students to be the very best they can be. If you choose not to practice, you essentially choose not to improve. This is true in any area of life. Everyone has the same amount of time allotted to them. What you choose to do with your time, and where you spend your time, has little to do with the activities being done and more to do with the value attached to each activity.

I believe it’s important to be well-rounded and have many diverse interests. I want students to enjoy music, to learn to be creative and understand how to express themselves musically - either by creating music of their own, or interpreting the music of others - by arranging and improvising well known music. In addition, I encourage students to play sports, dance, sing, draw, read, and develop their talents. I want them to be more than musicians, I want them to learn to become well-rounded individuals.

Above all, I want everyone to continually improve and do their best. I encourage everyone to set goals, dream big, and be the best they can be in whatever they choose to do. Life is full of wonderful choices. Choose the best out of life and learn as much as you can from everyone everywhere. I prefer being called a Music Mentor™ because I want to mentor others and help them to live their dreams.

Your life is your musical symphony. Make it a masterpiece!

Jerald Simon

This example is from Urban Fusion (measure 11) on page 38. Many left hand “rock” rhythms have repeated eighth notes played as octave intervals. In this case, we are playing an A octave interval (since the piece begins in the key of A minor)

This is an A harmonic octave interval played as quarter notes

This easy example is from ROCK ON! (measure 15) on page 6. A simple way to get going with an easy left hand “rock” pattern is to play an octave interval where the pinkie is held down (as a whole note) and the thumb is played as quarter notes.

Now take the octave intervals and move up in octaves

This example is from Jam Session (found in measure 53) on page 26. Many pop pieces and songs use a fifth interval with the left hand - alternating between an eighth note and an eighth rest.

This example is from ROCK ON! (found in measure 53) on page 8. Again we are using the octave interval with the left hand, but now, instead of only doing straight eighth notes - the pinkie is held down to create the “& 3 off beat rhythm)

This example is from Crowd Surfing (measure 73) on page 20. This is a vari-ation on the previous example shown above (from ROCK ON!)

Try playing these examples in several keys. You should try playing these patterns beginning on every note on the piano (A, B, C, D, E, F, G including all of the sharps and flats). Become familiar with the rhythms and make sure your left hand can keep the pattern going independent of the right hand. When you can do this comfortably in all keys, it will help you tremendously when playing rock and pop rhythms. Have fun with the following seven “cool songs” that rock! Remember, you are a rock star! ROCK ON!
