Music Magazine Research – Cover Analysis

I like how this magazine has used props in it’s cover image – in this case a microphone – to accentuate the artist’s retrospective soul image. I also like how they’ve put stars around the artist’s name, I think this is an interesting and unusual effect.

This magazine has put it’s slogo as a skyline, I think this is also a good effect. All the font is in sans serif except the main article’s title which uses a serif font, to add to the artist’s sophisticated image.

This cover is unusual in that it doesn’t keep all it’s article titles to the left – instead they are spread out all over the cover.

I like how the cover has kept things simple by using just the artist’s names on the covers in bold capitals and a little bit about the article below.

Music Magazine Research – Cover Analysis

I really like how Spin has taken it’s cover photo outside and not in a studio – I think this gives the band a laid-back feel. The photo doesn’t look posed or thought about too much and so looks quite fun and relaxed.

The magazine has used photo insets and pull quotes from other artist’s featured in the magazine and has placed these on the left hand side so to capture people’s attention when the magazine is on a shelf.

The cover uses sans serif font throughout and this makes the magazine seem simple and less serious.

I like the slogo above the masthead as it is short and simple.

Music Magazine Research – Cover Analysis

Rolling Stone has gone against the normal medium close-up shot and done a long shot of the whole band featured on the cover. The photo looks well thought through and I think this shows that the editors had planned out how it should look carefully before shooting.

I especially like how this magazine has made it’s entire cover style relate to the band’s image, using a similar font throughout. I think the way they’ve used page breaks is also really good and adds to the style of the cover.

I like the masthead on this cover as it’s quite iconic and I like the font and style that make it stand out. This particular magazine is successful enough to be able to get away with obscuring their masthead with the band’s photo. This magazine does not have a slogo like the other two magazines I have looked at.
