There are fundamental skills of music making that can be learned as soon as students are physically capable of managing the instruments (and in some cases even when they are not) and they can begin musical literacy in a collective environment that fosters their growth as music performers, listeners, creators, and consumers. The sooner these skills are introduced and applied, the sooner students can experience a sense of self esteem by participating in an artistic “team” endeavor where every member adds to the greater good of the whole, and where they can develop an appreciation for an art form that provides immense personal satisfaction and pride through their active participation.” - Dr. Angela Schroeder (Director of Bands at University of Alberta) Does my child have to be musical? Every student is musical and can learn. Does my child need to have previous band experience? No. Is note reading a requirement? No. How do I pick my instrument for band? At the first meeting, this will be discussed with the music director. FAQs

What programs are being offered? The Band and Choral Enrichment programs are intended to complement the current music programs that are thriving in our schools. Students enrolled in St. Albert Public Schools can join the grade five to eight Choral Enrichment Program, and/or the grade five and six Band Enrichment Program.

Why choose an enrichment program? These programs will complement what your child is currently learning in the music classroom. Music experiences will be expanded, creative experiences will be fostered, and acquaintances will be made with students from other schools, which will continue to build a strong musical community in our district.

How much will this cost? Please see the St. Albert Public School’s website at www.spschools.org or the registration insert for fees and rehearsal dates. There is an incentive for registering early and students may register for one or both programs. (Register for both programs at a discounted cost).

What are the commitments?• Registration.• Parent and student attendance at the first meeting in September.• Weekly attendance at rehearsal.• Parents are responsible for transportation to and from rehearsals.• Two concerts during the school year.• Instrument rental (band only - options will be provided at first meeting).

St. Albert Public Schools is committed to music education and will be offering evening Band and Choral Enrichment programs to enhance and expand music education.

“There are studies that show music at an early age is good for learning. Children can’t understand physics equations when they are five but they can understand musical patterns. Music makes them better students in other subjects.” - The Honourable Tommy Banks (Canadian icon, musician and retired Senator)
